Michael Klein on the Targums : collected essays 1972-2002 /

: During his life, Michael Klein played a key role in helping establish the foundation for the modern study of the Targums. He was known for his thorough studies of targumic translation techniques and for his editions of the Fragment Targums and the Cairo Geniza fragments of Palestinian Targums. This collection of his essays brings together some of his writings on translation technique and studies on the Cairo Geniza material on Targums Onqelos and Jonathan, as well as the Writings. Essays on the Palestinian Targums feature as well, with studies of Targum Neofiti and Geniza discoveries that occurred after his edition. It begins with a Foreward by Avigdor Shinan and Rimon Kasher and ends with a personal tribute by Stefan Reif.

KV 5 : a preliminary report on the excavation of the tomb of the sons of Rameses II in the Valley of the Kings /

: "The Theban Mapping Project (TMP) was established in 1979 to prepare a detailed survey and archaeological database for the Theban Necropolis. As part of its work in the Valley of the Kings, it relocated KV 5. Clearing that tomb, the TMP discovered that what had been thought to be an unimportant, uninteresting, uninscribed pit tomb was actually the largest tomb ever found in Egypt. KV 5 is known to have 150 corridors and chambers on several levels and many more are likely to be discovered. The tomb is unique in size and plan and in its function as a family mausoleum for many of the sons of the pharaoh Rameses II." "This is the first technical report on KV5. It covers much of the work undertaken between 1988 and 1999. Copiously illustrated, this study is a reference for understanding one of the most important discoveries ever made in the Theban Necropolis."--Jacket.

The reliefs of the chapel of Nebhepetre Mentuhotep at Gebelein (CGT 7003/1-277) /

: In 1910 Ernesto Schiaparelli, along with the Italian Archaeological Mission on behalf of the Regio Museo di Antichità Egizie, excavated the area where, during the Eleventh Dynasty, King Nebhepetre Mentuhotep erected a chapel to the goddess Hathor at the site of Gebelein. Some of the blocks belonging to this chapel had already been moved to the Cairo Museum during the nineteenth century, and finds during Schiaparelli's campaign were taken to the Egyptian Museum at Turin. In this work, Elisa Fiore Marochetti presents documents from these two museums and gives an architectonic and decorative reconstitution of an unknown monument. The mostly unpublished blocks and fragments, presented here as the General Catalogue of the Turin Museum, follow a general introduction to the geographical, religious, and historical setting of Gebelein and of the chapel before Mentuhotep's reunification of the land. The dating of the chapel is formulated on the basis of the iconographical style of the reliefs and of the titulary borne by Mentuhotep. \'The publication therefore not only presents a valuable reference to the Egyptian antiquities housed in Turin's Egyptian Museum. It also presents a valuable addition to literature on Egyptian temple decoration and development, royal iconography, kingship and the course of events on the verge of the Middle Kingdom.\' Nico Staring, Macquarie University

Islamic reformism and Christianity : a critical reading of the works of Muḥammad Rashīd Riḍā and his associates (1898-1935) /

: No previous full-scale study has been undertaken so far to study the polemical writings of the Muslim reformist Muḥammad Rashīd Riḍā (1865-1935) and his associates in his well-known journal al-Manār (The Lighthouse). The book focuses on the dynamics of Muslim understanding of Christianity during the late 19th and the early 20th century in the light of al-Manār's sources of knowledge, and its answers to the social, political and theological aspects of missionary movements in the Muslim World of Riḍā's age. The basis of the analysis encompasses the voluminous publications by Riḍā and other Manārists in his journal. Besides, it makes use of newly-discovered materials, including Riḍā's private papers, and some other remaining personal archives of some of his associates.
