Discovering Tutankhamun : from Howard Carter to the Golden City /

: "Penned by one of the world's best known Egyptologists, former Egyptian minister of state for antiquities Zahi Hawass, who was personally involved in research into the enigmatic young pharaoh, this revised and updated edition of Discovering Tutankhamun reviews the current state of our knowledge about the life, death, and burial of Tutankhamun in light of the latest investigations and newest technology, including the CT scans that finally revealed the identity of Tutankhamun's mother. Hawass places the king in the broader context of Egyptian history, unraveling the intricate and much debated relationship between various members of the royal family, and the circumstances surrounding the turbulent Amarna period. He also succinctly explains the religious background and complex beliefs in the afterlife that defined and informed many features of Tutankhamun's tomb. The history of the exploration of the Valley of the Kings is discussed, as well as the background and mutual relationships of the main protagonists. The tomb and its most important treasures are described and illustrated, and the modern X-raying and CT-scanning of the king's mummy are presented in detail. The description of the latest DNA examination of the mummies of Tutankhamun and members of his family, much of which was never made known to the public, is one of the most absorbing parts of the book and demonstrates that scientific methods may produce results that cannot be paralleled by traditional Egyptology. This updated and revised edition recounts untold stories from 1922 about Howard Carter and his momentous discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb. It also includes a whole new chapter dedicated to the Golden City, which was founded by Amenhotep III, shedding new light on our knowledge of Thebes' landscape in the reign of Tutankhamun and the end of the New Kingdom."-- Provided by publisher.

Enlightening Europe on Islam and the Ottomans : Mouradgea d'Ohsson and His Masterpiece /

: Mouradgea d'Ohsson's Tableau général de l'Empire othoman offered the Enlightenment Republic of Letters its most authoritative work on Islam and the Ottomans, also a practical reference work for kings and statesmen. Profusely illustrated and opening deep insights into illustrated book production in this period, this is also the richest collection of visual documentation on the Ottomans in a hundred years. Shaped by the author's personal struggles, the work yet commands recognition in its own totality as a monument to inter-cultural understanding. In form one of the great taxonomic works of Enlightenment thought, this is a work of advocacy in the cause of reform and amity among France, Sweden, and the Ottoman Empire.

Brill's Companion to the Legacy of Greek Political Thought /

: A wealth of political literature has survived from Greek antiquity, from political theory by Plato and Aristotle to the variety of prose and verse texts that more broadly demonstrate political thinking. However, despite the extent of this legacy, it can be surprisingly hard to say how ancient Greek political thought makes its influence felt, or whether this influence has been sustained across the centuries. This volume includes a range of disciplinary responses to issues surrounding the legacy of Greek political thought, exploring the ways in which political thinking has evolved from antiquity to the present day.

Completing the First Year of Independence : British Official Reports from South Asia, 1 May - 17 September 1948 (Part 1 & Part 2) /

: The present volume, in two parts, completes the documentation of the first year of South Asian independence as seen from British official records. This traumatic year had been marked by horrendous communal violence; mass movement of refugees; war in Kashmir; the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi (and death of Mohammed Ali Jinnah a little after its end); as well as huge economic and political problems in both India and Pakistan. The Acting British High Commissioner in India summed up the first year of India's independence graphically in September 1948 when he wrote: 'The most remarkable perhaps of the achievements of Pandit Nehru's Government is that they survived at all in face of the quite overwhelming difficulties.' The work covers a wide range of developments but two issues are at its centre - Kashmir and Hyderabad. As regards Kashmir, hopes of a settlement were raised by the arrival of the U.N. Kashmir Commission in South Asia in July 1948. However, by September it was clear that the Commission had not been immediately successful in its endeavours. Information received from Richard Symonds, an official on the Commission's staff, is included. On Hyderabad the record is one of economic warfare, frequent rumours of an Indian invasion to unite the State with India and attempts by Mountbatten, Mirza Ismail and Roy Bucher (the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army) to bring about a peaceful settlement. Eventually Indian forces entered the State on 13 September and the volume ends with the Nizam's capitulation on 17 September. Included as appendices are important surveys of the Hyderabad situation.

The Statute of the International Criminal Court: A Documentary History /

: The 1998 Statute of the International Criminal Court was the realization (albeit imperfect) of the oldest and longest-postponed item on the UN agenda, a judicial arm that could enforce the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Genocide Convention. For scholars studying this slow but crucial development in the international law of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide, here is the essential documentary history: the draft statutes of 1951, 1953, 1981, and 1994, along with various related reports, the 1998 Statute, and commentary by Professor Bassiouni, who chaired the Drafting Committee of the 1998 Statute. Value : sources and readings on a key concept of the globalized world /

: \'Value\' is arguably one of the key concepts of the globalized world. In this world, to be is to be or have a value, while all thinking and implementing has the form of valuing and evaluating. Thanks to their operative expediency, both the concept of value and thinking through values appear as sufficient and such as not to need any interrogation as to their provenance and implications. The essays of this volume, on the other hand, provide insights precisely in these aspects by presenting, on the one hand, classical philosophical sources on value, and, on the other, readings that show how the concept of value shapes our manner of thinking in pivotal issues and domains of economics, culture and knowledge.

Asia Pacific Pentecostalism /

: Asia Pacific Pentecostalism , edited by Denise A. Austin, Jacqueline Grey, and Paul W. Lewis, yields previously untold stories and interdisciplinary analysis of pioneer foundations, denominational growth, leadership training, contextualisation, and community development across East Asia, Southeast Asia, and Oceania. Pentecostalism in the Asia Pacific has made an enormous contribution to its global family-from the more visible influence of Yonggi Cho from Korea to the worship revolutions from Australia (particularly associated with Hillsong) and the lesser known missionary activity from Fiji-each region has contributed significantly to global Christianity. Some communities prospered despite hostile environments and wartime devastation. This volume provides a systematic study of the geographical contexts of Asia Pacific Pentecostalism, including historical development, theological influences, and sociological perspectives.
