Wordplay on Proper Names in Luke-Acts /

This monograph identifies forty proper names in Luke-Acts whose meanings are significant in their narrative contexts. About half of these names are also used in various types of verbal wordplays. Is the name of the recipient of both of Luke's works, Theophilus "Loved by God," used meaningfully? Is the name of Eutychus "Fortunate," who survives a fall from a third-story window, significant in the context of this story? Does the common appearance of the name Rhoda "Rose" in New Comedy contribute a comical element to her role as an ineffective door keeper? Luke's literary practice in his treatment of names appears to be fundamentally different from that of other New Testament writers. Why is this the case?

Unlike contemporary literary-linguistic configurations of genre, current methodologies for the study of the Gospel genre are designed only to target genre similarities not genre differences . This basic oversight results in the convoluted discussion we witness in Lukan genre study today. Each recent treatment of the genre of Luke-Acts represents a distinct effort to draw parallels between Luke-Acts and a specific (or multiple) literary tradition(s). These studies all underestimate the role of literary divergence in genre analysis, leveraging much-if not, all-of their case on literary proximity . This monograph will show how attention to literary divergence from a number of angles may bring resolution to the increasingly complex discussions of the genre(s) of Luke-Acts.

In Interpreting Quoted Speech , Samuel Hildebrandt analyzes the literary phenomenon of one speaker quoting the words of another speaker within prophetic discourse. Normativity and Variety of Speech Actions embraces papers focused on the performative dimension of language. While all texts in the volume recognize speech primarily as a type of action, the collection is indicative of the multifaceted nature of J.L. Austin's original reflection, which invited many varied research programmes.
