Quantification : transcending beyond Frege's boundaries : a case study in transcendental-metaphysical logic /

In his attempt to give an answer to the question of what constitutes real knowledge, Kant steers a middle course between empiricism and rationalism. True knowledge refers to a given empirical reality, but true knowledge has to be understood as necessary as well, and so consequently, must be a priori. Both demands can only be reconciled if synthetic a priori judgments are possible. To ground this possibility, Kant develops his transcendental logic. In Frege's program of providing a logicistic basis for true knowledge the same problem is at issue: his logicist solution places the quantifier into the position of the basic element connected to the truth of a proposition. As the basic element of a theory of logic, it refers at the same time to something in reality. Mołczanow argues that Frege's program fails because it does not pay sufficient attention to Kant's transcendental logic. Frege interprets synthetic a priori judgments as ultimately analytic, and thus falls back onto a Leibnizian rationalism, thereby ignoring Kant's middle course. Under the title of the transcendental analytic of quantification Mołczanow discusses Frege's concept of quantification. For Frege, the proper analysis of number words and the categories of quantity raises problems which can only be solved, according to Mołczanow, with the help of Kant's transcendental logic. Mołczanow's book thus deserves its places in the series Critical Studies in German Idealism because it provides a further elaboration of Kant's transcendental logic by bringing it into conversation with contemporary logic. The result is a new conception of the nature of quantification which speaks to our time.

The researcher focusing on religion and internet or digital religion as an object of study must seek answers to a number of questions. Is computer-mediated religious communication a particular communication process whose object is what we conventionally call religion? For the reconstruction of early Christianity, the lives of early Christians, their world of ideas, their ways of living, and their literature. The question of constructing tradition, concepts of origin, and memory as well as techniques and practices of knowledge transmission, are central for cultures in general. In esotericism, however, such questions and techniques play an outstanding role and are widely reflected upon, in its literature. Esoteric paradigms not only understand themselves in elaborated mytho-poetical narratives as bearers of "older", "hidden", "higher" knowledge. They also claim their knowledge to be of a particular origin. And they claim this knowledge has been transmitted by particular (esoteric) means, media and groups. Consequently, esotericism not only involves the construction of its own tradition; it can even be understood as a specific form of tradition and transmission. The various studies of the present voume, which contains the papers of a conference held in Tübingen in July 2007, provide an overview of the most important concepts and ways of constructing tradition in esotericism.

Political changes in Central and Eastern Europe in the 1990s led to important territorial changes and confronted decision-makers and international lawyers with complex questions relevant to State continuity and succession. The case of the Baltic States was particularly difficult since they re-emerged after half-a-century of Soviet occupation. In addition to questions on the status of new States, important issues arose with regard to the fate of nationals of the former federations, generating frantic international efforts in developing and consolidating available rules and principles on nationality in situations of territorial change. In this context, the Baltic case stood apart. It raised questions of non-recognition of consequences of their illegal occupation in international law, but that was not the way the issues were dealt with. The book documents and examines the story of the Soviet occupation of the Baltic States in 1940 and their claim to State continuity fifty years later. It brings in the issue of the obligations of Russia in this context. The book asks the question what nationality solutions had to be adopted in the region and shows the scrutiny they received from international institutions. This second edition of the book revisits decisions that were taken in the 1990s and asks whether they have withstood the test of time. The case of the Baltic States is an example of the strength of international law rules, when applied with courage, and of the risks, when too many compromises with rules and principles are accepted. Although the book is specific in its coverage, it is of general importance because it draws conclusions concerning developments in law and practice which are relevant for a better understanding and regulation of statehood and nationality in international law.

Some years ago, SSR (The Dutch Training and Study Centre for the Judiciary) started a programme to reinforce and deepen knowledge of Community law among the members of the judiciary. Inquiry had revealed a tendency to leave matters of Community law to specialists and interested parties only, even though European law is part of the national legal system and all judges and public prosecutors should therefore be aware of their position as European magistrates. With this work, SSR would like to promote an increase in knowledge of European law among the members of the judiciary and, in particular, to heighten their consciousness of the existence and meaning of regulations of European law which are of immediate importance to the national administration of justice. Community law is a matter for all European countries, and uniformity, and the legal protection it affords, requires an univocal interpretation and application of the regulations of Community law among all member states. The book investigates several themes relating to the actual application of European law by members of the judiciary in everyday practice, including the development of the role of members of the national judiciaries regarding the maintenance of Community law, European norms, the consequences of negligence in the application and implementation of Community law, and the future conception of judicial responsibilities.
