Conceptualizing friendship in time and place /

The concept of friendship is more easily valued than it is described: this volume brings together reflections on its meaning and practice in a variety of social and cultural settings in history and in the present time, focusing on Asia and the Western, Euro-American world. The extension of the group in which friendship is recognized, and degrees of intimacy (whether or not involving an erotic dimension) and genuine appreciation may vary widely. Friendship may simply include kinship bonds-solidarity being one of its more general characteristics. In various contexts of travelling, migration, and a dearth of offspring, friendship may take over roles of kinship, also in terms of care.

After orientalism : critical perspectives on western agency and eastern re-appropriations /

The debate on Orientalism began some fifty years ago in the wake of decolonization. While initially considered a turning point, Edward Said's Orientalism (1978) was in fact part of a larger academic endeavor - the political critique of "colonial science" - that had already significantly impacted the humanities and social sciences. In a recent attempt to broaden the debate, the papers collected in this volume, offered at various seminars and an international symposium held in Paris in 2010-2011, critically examine whether Orientalism, as knowledge and as creative expression, was in fact fundamentally subservient to Western domination. By raising new issues, the papers shift the focus from the center to the peripheries, thus analyzing the impact on local societies of a major intellectual and institutional movement that necessarily changed not only their world, but the ways in which they represented their world. World history, which assumes a plurality of perspectives, leads us to observe that the Saidian critique applies to powers other than Western European ones - three case studies are considered here: the Ottoman, Russian (and Soviet), and Chinese empires. Other essays in this volume proceed to analyze how post-independence states have made use of the tremendous accumulation of knowledge and representations inherited from previous colonial regimes for the sake of national identity, as well as how scholars change and adapt what was once a hegemonic discourse for their own purposes. What emerges is a new landscape in which to situate research on non-Western cultures and societies, and a road-map leading readers beyond the restrictive dichotomy of a confrontation between West and East. Civil Society, Religion, and the Nation : Modernization in Intercultural Context: Russia, Japan, Turkey /

Japan, Russia, and Turkey are major examples of countries with different ethnic, religious, and cultural background that embarked on the path of modernization without having been colonized by a Western country. In all three cases, national consciousness has played a significant role in this context. The project of Modernity is obviously of European origin, but is it essentially European? Does modernization imply loss of a country's cultural or national identity? If so, what is the "fate" of the modernization process in these cases? The presence of the idea and reality of civil society can be considered a real marker of Modernity in this respect, because it presupposes the development of liberalism, individualism and human rights. But are these compatible with nationalism and with the idea of a national religion? These questions are the more pressing, as Japan is considered part of the Western world in many respects, and Russia and Turkey are defining their relation to the European Union in different ways. An investigation of these three countries, set off against more general reflections, sheds light on the possibilities or limitations of modernization n a non-European context.

The seminar on `Freedom of Association' was held in Reykjavik (Iceland) from 26 to 28 August 1993. From the early part of the first century BC, Egyptian cultural artefacts spread to an increasing degree into Palestine and Syria and (via the Greeks and Phoenicians) into the Greek, Italian and Western Phoenician spheres. Following a presentation of the Near Eastern background and a survey of Sardinian findspots, this work lists the types of monument found on Sardinia (from the 8th c. to the Roman period). In the case of both amulets (gods in human and animal form) and scarabs made if steatite and fayence an attempt is made, using a carefully developed typology (both of material and form) and other statistical criteria, to derive a characterisation of groups of differing origin (Egyptian, Eastern Phoenician, Punic). These objects reflect the expansion and adaptation of polupar Egyptian magic. Even the Egyptian motifs on hard-stone Punic scarabs and precious-metal artefacts have a religious significance, which is very closely related to Egyptian concepts. In the same way the Egyptian elements on Punic steles and portions of architecture underline their sacral character. This study pursues methodological goals using evidence from the whole of Mediterranean area.
