Honour Consciousness, Religion and Gender : Brazilian and Pakistani Lived Experiences in Australia /

: The book explains how honour consciousness shapes the lives of Brazilian and Pakistani women in their countries of origin, and the relationship between honour, religion and gender highlighting the question: is honour consciousness experienced differently by men and women? In this book, I explore how lived experiences of honour consciousness and religion in Brazil and Pakistan are hybridised and operate on a spectrum and are manifested through gender power relations and demonstrated through "moderate" and "extreme" notions of honour consciousness, and how these are transmitted to Australia. These concepts give a new epistemological perspective to the use of Hegel and Foucault within gender studies. See Less

Religion on the move! : new dynamics of religious expansion in a globalizing world /

: How do religions spread in today's world, where Christian missions have lost influence and modern nations have replaced colonial empires? Religions on the Move is a collection of essays charting new religious expansions. Contemporary evangelists may be Nigerian, Korean, Brazilian or Congolese, working at the grassroots and outside the mainstream in Pentecostal, reformist Islamic, and Hindu spiritual currents. While transportation and media provide newfound mobility, the mission field may be next door, in Europe, North America, and within the "South," where migrants from Africa, Asia, and Latin America settle. These essays, using perspectives from religious studies, ethnography, history and sociology, show that immigrants, women, and other disempowered peoples transmit their faiths from everywhere to everywhere, engaging in globalization from below.

The Christ who Embraces : An Orthodox Theology of Margins /

: Jacob Joseph's book, The Christ who Embraces: An Orthodox Theology of Margins , explores the intersection of Orthodox Christian mission and caste dynamics among St. Thomas/Syrian/Orthodox Christians in India. It defines a liturgical touch or embrace in the context of 'untouchability,' where people identify as equal without discrimination, reflecting the inseparable unity of Christ's transcendental (divine) and immanent (human) nature. Dalits in India : Religion as a Source of Bondage or Liberation with Special Reference to Christians /

: The present work studies the subject of religion as a source of bondage or liberation with special reference to the casteless Christians. It deals with the Dalits in India in general, the history of their problems, and the basic question of their identity. The discussion of their history also includes the role of religion and how far it has acted as an agent of bondage or liberation for the Dalits. The religions which are referred to in this work are Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, Lingayatism (Veerasaivism), Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Zoroastrianism and Baha'i religion. This work discusses in detail the role of Hindu religion with special reference to the caste system. Besides Hindu religion, detailed references are made to Christian religion or faith with emphasis on casteless Christians. Christian Dalits are casteless because they belong to a community who in their pre-Dalit state were casteless and classless people. Also Christians are supposed to be casteless, because Christian religion is considered to be above caste or class.

Inventing Origins? Aetiological Thinking in Greek and Roman Antiquity /

: Aetiologies seem to gratify the human desire to understand the origin of a phenomenon. However, as this book demonstrates, aetiologies do not exclusively explore origins. Rather, in inventing origin stories they authorise the present and try to shape the future. This book explores aetiology as a tool for thinking, and draws attention to the paradoxical structure of origin stories. Aetiologies reduce complex ambivalence and plurality to plainly causal and temporal relations, but at the same time, by casting an anchor into the past, they open doors to progress and innovation.

Rationality and the Poet : Recollections of Bertolt Brecht and Selected Writings /

: Rationality and the Poet is a lively account of the discussions between the young Bertolt Brecht and the Marxian Political Economist Fritz Sternberg. Set in the late Weimer Republic, these reminiscences chart the rise and fall of the friendship between the poet and the theoretician, from their initial encounters and Brecht's induction into Marxist political economy to their increasing tensions over the Soviet Union. Sternberg charted an independent position between the Second and Third Internationals and remains a largely undiscovered theorist of the period spanning the end of the First World War to the Cold War. In this volume a number of his writings have been selected from the period of his most intensive friendship with Brecht to highlight the versatile and independent socialist cast of Sternberg's mind. Here published in English for the first time, Rationality and the Poet casts a new light on the development of Brecht's politics and the relationship between society and drama that informed his art.

A Description of the Character, Manners and Customs of the People of India and of their Institutions, Religious and Civil /

: First published in 1879, A Description of the Character, Manners and Customs of the People of India and of their Institutions, Religious and Civil by the Abbé J.A. Dubois, and translated from French by Rev. G.U. Pope, is arranged into three parts, with each section devoted to various aspects and society of the Indian people who lived in south India of that time. The author, Abbé J.A. Dubois, who was a French missionary, states at the outset that his work is the result of a period of almost eighteen years when he lived amongst the Indian people just the way they did, adopting the indigenous forms of living and clothing - even their prejudices. Thus, he not only familiarized himself with their lifestyle, but also won their confidence which helped him in writing of this book. Thus, his study is based on first-hand experience. For convenience of the readers, the editor's footnotes that provide explanations as well as references and cross-references to Indian scriptures and other texts have contributed to the value of this work. Part I studies the caste system, with its divisions and subdivisions, its origins, and prayers, ceremonies, and beyond. Part II, devoted to Brahmins, examines in detail the four stages of life, the norms and practices that govern them, discussing defilements and remedies, rules governing Brahmin women, Hindu philosophers and many others. Part III focuses on religion and includes the Trimurti, festivals, animal worship, Jains, military system, etc.

History of Medieaval Hindu India : Volume 2: Early History of Rajputs (750 to 1000 A.D.) /

: Rajputs are a warrior caste who established major kingdoms in Northern India in the early medieval times. During the Sultanate and Mughal rule, Rajputs played a key role in kingship. This book is the second volume of History of Medieaval Hindu India's three-volume series, which covers the history of the Rajput community starting from ad 750 till ad 1000 when the Turkish invasions began. The book has three parts. The first part starts with the genealogical origins of the Rajput clan, especially their foreign origins propounded by contemporary scholars. The second part covers the historical profile of kingdoms in Northern India and Deccan regions such as Chahamanas, Chandellas, Palas, Rashtrakutas, and others. This book also contains the description of Rajputs made by the Arab chroniclers who visited India during the said period. The concluding part deals with the language, cultural, religious, political, civil, and administrative roles and responsibilities of Rajputs in the medieval period.

The Khōjā of Tanzania : discontinuities of a postcolonial religious identity /

: The Khōjā of Tanzania, Discontinuities of a Postcolonial Religious Identity attempts to reconstruct the development of Khōjā religious identity from their arrival to the Swahili coast in the late 18th century until the turn of the 21st century. This multidisciplinary study incorporates Gujarati, Kacchī, Swahili, and Arabic sources to examine the formation of an Afro-Asian Islamic identity (jamatī) from their initial Indic caste identity (jñāti) towards an emergent Near Eastern imaged Islamic nation (ummatī) through four disciplinary approaches: historiography, politics, linguistics, and ethnology. Over the past two centuries, rapid transitions and discontinuities have produced the profound tensions which have resulted from the willful amnesia of their pre-Islamic Indic civilizational past for an ideological and politicized 'Islamic' present. This study aims to document, theorize, and engage this theological transformation of modern Khōjā religious identities as expressed through dimensions of power, language, space, and the body.

Marriage and Divorce in India : Changing Concepts and Practices /

: This volume explores the nature of social change in the fundamental institution of marriage in Indian society. It documents the churning going on in the conjugal bond with reference to gender inequality, patriarchy, domestic violence, divorce, separation, and remarriage under the impact of urbanization, modernization and globalization. The work includes fourteen papers divided into three parts. Part I discusses changes in the choice of spouse in terms of age at marriage and the age differential between spouses; endogamy and hypergamy; inter-caste and interfaith marriage; and divorce and remarriage among Hindus, Muslims and Christians with particular attention to feminism. It raises new questions about the rising trends of separation, desertion, divorce, remarriage, and the option to live single. Part II takes a closer look at love, sex and marital relationships through the prism of films, state laws, and civil rights. It specifically deals with the live-in relationships, extra-marital relations, matrimonial litigation, and use and abuse of IPC 498A. Part III documents the changing character of spouse selection through the newer forms such as the print and electronic media and the shift from parental choice to individual choice. The volume will interest students and scholars of sociology, social anthropology, family studies, and law, as well as counselors, various religious organizations, and electronic and print media.

Border Fears in the Baltic Sea Region since 1918 /

: Collective fear is probably the most productive emotion in shaping international relations not only in short-term political decision-making processes, but also in the deeper layers of intercultural communication based on social and cultural memory. Taking into account the Baltic Sea Region as an area of multi-layered interdependencies, identities, and interests is the starting point to consider the emotional factors of international relations in this macro-region. Given the deep territorial changes in the Baltic Sea Region throughout the twentieth century, one of the most burning issues would concern political, geopolitical, cultural, ethnical, and linguistic borders. The multi-perspectivity of the volume including studies by historians, political scientists, and sociologists aims at casting a new light on bordering, de-bordering and re-bordering processes in the Baltic Sea Region since 1918.

Horace's iambic criticism : casting blame (Iambike Poiesis) /

: To date the positive value of Horace's iambic criticism has been underestimated, and overall Horace has been tamed too much. By examining the relationship of the iambic tradition with ritual, this book studies how Horace's Epodes are more than partisan (consolidating Octavian's victory by projecting hostilities onto powerless others) but meta-partisan (forming fractured entities into a diversified unity). As Horace moves through his iambics to lyrics ( Epodes to Odes ), he stages acts of aggression and retaliation along with attempts at resistance and reconciliation so that this shifting back and forth creates a correspondence between perspectives. Unity develops from diversity, polyeideia . This is the point at which Horace socializes literary criticism ( Ars Poetica ): societas becomes the telos of his poetics.

Dissident Renaissance: Rewriting the History of Early Modern Philosophy as Political Practice /

: The Renaissance has a peculiar status in philosophical historiography: it tends to disappear from the dominant narrative-as Charles Schmitt famously noticed-but it also resurfaces unexpectedly in marginal reception histories. This book casts light on intellectual constellations or geographical areas, which have traditionally been considered peripheral to the emergence of the Renaissance. The case studies presented in the book explore philosophical historiography as a political practice, showing how, in times of cultural crisis or change, the scholarly rediscovery of the Renaissance often served to develop or legitimise an ideal of social, religious or moral reform. Driven by personal concerns and political choices, historiography is revealed as an act of dissent against mainstream reconstructions.

From a virgin womb : the Apocalypse of Adam and the virgin birth /

: Scholarly researches on the virgin birth have often focussed rather narrowly on the theological and historical difficulties it tends to raise. The Nag Hammadi Apocalypse of Adam, however, provides for the first time a glimpse into the wider background of ideas and myths to which it belonged. Prophecies there concerning a universal 'Illuminator' mention his birth 'from a virgin womb'. Several of the stories, drawn from Iranian and other sources , also appear in apocalyptic and testamental literature contemporary with Christian origins. The book centrally analyses a body of extraordinarily detailed narrative parallels between a cluster of stories in the Apocalypse and the infancy narratives of Mt. 1-2, concluding that these stories serve to identify Jesus as the True Prophet who is the fulfilment of history - though not as Son of God. The question of Mt.'s special tradition and its relation to Lk. is also cast in a new light.

De tribus principiis, oder, Beschreibung der drey Principien göttliches Wesens : Of the three principles of divine being, 1619 /

: Jacob Boehme's Of the Three Principles of Divine Being, 1619, is vital for understanding his work as a whole, its relationship to its epoch, and its role in intellectual history. Reproduced here using the methods of critical edition, the original of the work and its adjacent translation, together with an extensive introduction and commentary, provide unprecedented access to this essential work of early modern thought and cast a fresh light on the revolutionary theological, philosophical, and scientific developments coinciding with the start of the Thirty Years' War. The 1730 edition is annotated with reference to the manuscript sources to clarify ambiguities so that the translation can interpret the text without refracting its meaning. This makes it possible to interpret Boehme's complex theories of the origin of the divine being and of nature, the human creature, and the female aspect of divinity.
