Ce livre est centré sur une problématique exclusive, fascinante autant que complexe, celle des rapports entre texte et image. Les auteurs, venus d'horizons très divers - théoriciens et historiens de la littérature et de l'art, philosophes, poètes - invitent le lecteur à lire un tableau de Chardin avec Proust, à interpréter Wilde à travers Whistler, ou à commenter Diderot avec Goethe. Holistic Qumran : trans-disciplinary research of Qumran and the Dead Sea Scrolls /

Much of the previous sixty years (1949-2009) have been devoted to the cleaning of the Dead Sea scrolls, their piecing together and their translation. The present volume is a scientific study of the various archaeological relics that have been found in the three units at Qumran: The settlement, the caves with the scrolls and the cemetery. With the aid of neutron activation of Qumran's pottery we established its human relations with neighboring sites, by radio carbon dating we placed the relics in their time frame, by DNA we study the provenance of the animal hides that served the scribes as parchment. The ink is studied for examining the degradation processes that started when the scrolls were written, 2000-2300 years ago.

Death in documentaries : the Memento Mori experience /

Memento mori is a broad and understudied cultural phenomenon and experience. The term "memento mori" is a Latin injunction that means "remember mortality," or more directly, "remember that you must die." In art and cultural history, memento mori appears widely, especially in medieval folk culture and in the well-known Dutch still life vanitas paintings of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Yet memento mori extends well beyond these points in art and cultural history. In Death in Documentaries: The Memento Mori Experience , Benjamin Bennett-Carpenter suggests that documentaries are an especially apt form of contemporary memento mori . Bennett-Carpenter shows that documentaries may offer composed transformative experiences in which a viewer may renew one's consciousness of mortality - and thus renew one's life.

The Catalogue (pp. 179-320), extensively describing 349 items ( 13 of which are manuscripts) gives a masterly reconstruction of Grolier's Library, which ranks among the most precious collections of books of all times. The owner (1479-1565) is rightly considered as the founding father of French bibliography.
