Charles Thomas (1928-2016) was a Cornishman and archaeologist, whose career from the 1950s spanned nearly seven decades. This period saw major developments that underpin the structures of archaeology in Britain today, in many of which he played a pivotal part. He campaigned for the Chair of Cornish Studies at the University of Exeter, which he then held from 1972 until retirement, after teaching archaeology at Edinburgh and Leicester Universities. The 'Intellectual Adventure in Archaeology' was to Charles the mental stimulation of developing narratives for the past, especially in the areas in which he was a leading authority, including the early church in Britain, the early medieval period more generally, and Cornish studies. The contributions to this volume demonstrate the extent to which his scholarship and character has underpinned the work of others, in Cornwall and beyond.

This volume brings together the leading experts in the history of European Oriental Studies. Their essays present a comprehensive history of the teaching and learning of Arabic in early modern Europe, covering a wide geographical area from southern to northern Europe and discussing the many ways and purposes for which the Arabic language was taught and studied by scholars, theologians, merchants, diplomats and prisoners. The contributions shed light on different methods and contents of language teaching in a variety of academic, scholarly and missionary contexts in the Protestant and the Roman Catholic world. The first week after arrival at Abu Simbel was occupied by the work of organization and the photogrammetric survey. The latter was undertaken by a team of three French scholars, assisted by Drs. Mahmoud Tolba and Hasan Mostafa of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Cairo. In charge was Professor Poiuilliers, Directeur de 1'Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures, a pioneer in all the applications of aerial survey. He served as chief of aerial observation for the AEF in 1916-1918. The first to apply the principles of aerial mapping to the study of architecture, it was his survey which was the basis of the photogrammetric section of the Report on the Monuments of Nubia (unfortunately without the mention of his name). By combining surveying and stereo (3-D) photography, he has been able to make very accurate measurements of buildings in the least possible time. From the results of the work'at Abu Simbel a model of the temple and an architectural study are now being prepared in Paris.
Religious Identity and the Problem of Historical Foundation : The Foundational Character of Authoritative Sources in the History of Christianity and Judaism /

The essays collected in this book deal with the question how, throughout the history of Christianity, Christian communities have tried to construct their identity by anchoring their views in authoritative and normative sources. The main focus is upon the problem of historical foundation through textual traditions but other authoritative sources ( role of religious leaders; ritual traditions) are taken into consideration as well. The book takes as its point of departure the fact that with the rise of modernity the former dependence of western church and society on authoritative sources was called into question. Ever since, appeal to such sources is no longer self-evident; at times it is even regarded as problematic. Based on this radical change brought about by modernity, the book is divided in two main parts. The first part deals with the question how Christian churches and confessions ( Roman-Catholic and Protestant) confronted modernity and which role was played by authoritative sources in the tradition to the modern era. Special attention will be paid to the way in which Judaism reacted to many of the same impulses, both societal and religious ones. The second part deals with the premodern period, from early Christianity to the post-Reformation era, and focuses on the role authoritative traditions, textual or otherwise, have played in providing various Christian communities with a relative stable identity. The aim of the book is to elucidate processes resulting in the formation of authoritative traditions as well as the effects of these traditions on the identity of Christian and Jewish communities. In addition, the book attempts to clarify the various ways in which Christian and Jewish communities have reacted to the growing suspicion authoritative traditions aroused in the western world since the rise of modernity.

This volume of the book series Königtum, Staat und Gesellschaft früher Hochkulturen contains the proceedings of the eleventh international conference dedicated to the ancient Egyptian temple in all its aspects, which was hosted by the Czech Institute of Egyptology, Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague in May 2017. The main theme of the meeting, the "Discourse between Tomb and Temple" revolved around the many diverse types of interaction that existed between two crucial and tangible expressions of ancient Egyptian thought, belief and culture. Ranging from the Old Kingdom to the era of Roman presence, the fourteen papers in this volume present, analyse and interpret evidence expressed in art, architecture, language, ritual, funerary and other practices, with a spotlight on relations, connections and exchanges between temple and tomb and its development and changing nature over time. Celebrated today for his groundbreaking work in logic and the foundations of mathematics, Bernard Bolzano (1781-1848) was best known in his own time as a leader of the reform movement in his homeland (Bohemia, then part of the Austrian Empire). As professor of religious science at the Charles University in Prague from 1805 to 1819, Bolzano was a highly visible public intellectual, a courageous and determined critic of abuses in Church and State. Based in large part on a carefully argued utilitarian practical philosophy, he developed a non-violent program for the reform of the authoritarian institutions of the Empire, which he himself set in motion through his teaching and other activities. Rarely has a philosopher had such a great impact on the political culture of his homeland. This volume contains a substantial collection of Bolzano's writings on ethics and politics, translated into English for the first time. It includes a complete translation of the treatise On the Best State , his principal writings on ethics, an essay on the contemporary situation in Ireland, and a selection of his Exhortations, dealing with such topics as enlightenment, civil disobedience, the status of women, anti-Semitism and Czech-German relations in Bohemia. It will be of particular interest to students of central European philosophy and history, and more generally to philosophers and historians of ideas.
