The Observationes tumultuariae of Johan van Bleiswijk (1684-1748) /

In the Dutch Republic, courts made decisions by voting and judgments were not given reasoned motivations. Although some judges kept a record of the preceding deliberations, the only extensive collections we have had until recently from the eighteenth century are those of van Bijnkershoek and Pauw. Fortunately, we are also in possession of the Observationes of Johan van Bleiswijk (in 1723-1748 a colleague of van Bijnkershoek). Van Bleiswijk provides an overview of the various opinions relating to cases at the time, but also expounds on his own views. In this way, he sheds light on his own perspective and legal views. Hence, van Bleiswijk's Observationes are a most welcome addition to our knowledge of judicial decision-making in the Dutch Republic.

This book has been written from the conviction that general statements about the philosophical position taken by Theophrastus in this small but extremely difficult treatise, can only be made on the basis of a detailed interpretation of each and every sentence of the text. This resulted in a full commentary, which evades no philological or philosophical question that should be asked in order to elicit from the text a maximum of information. The outcome is a cautious but nonetheless explicit and determinate characterization and evaluation of Theophrastean metaphysics as a biologist's metaphysics, which deserves the attention of philosophers in its own right. The author has paid special attention to questions of Peripatetic idiom and terminology, thus increasing the value of this book to students of Peripatetic thought in general. LXX-Isaiah as translation and interpretation : the strategies of the translator of the Septuagint of Isaiah /

This book offers a fresh understanding of how Isaiah was translated into Greek, by considering the impact of the translator's Alexandrian milieu on his work. Whereas most studies over the past fifty years have regarded the book's free translation style as betraying the translator's conviction that Isaiah's oracles were being fulfilled in his day, this study argues that he was primarily interested in offering his Greek-speaking co-religionists a cohesive representation of Isaiah's ideas. Comparison of the translator's interpretative tacks with those employed by the grammatikoi in their study of Homer offers a convincing picture of his work as an Alexandrian Jew and clarifies how this translation should be assessed in reconstructing early textual forms of Hebrew Isaiah.

Such was the view of Fokkelien van Dijk-Hemmes (1943-1994). This is a comprehensive collection of the late scholar's groundbreaking work in feminist biblical interpretation, in English translation. The essays document Van Dijk-Hemmes' development and show how her work relates to contemporary developments in feminist thinking. There is a Foreword by Mieke Bal, an in memoriam by Athalya Brenner, and an overview of van Dijk-Hemmes' extensive output of books and articles completes the volume. Fokkelien van Dijk-Hemmes taught Women's Studies and Old Testament at the University of Utrecht. In A Study of the Gospels in Codex Alexandrinus W. Andrew Smith delivers a fresh and highly-detailed examination of the codex and its rich variety of features using codicology, palaeography, and statistical analysis. Among the highlights of this study, W. Andrew Smith's work overturns the view that a single scribe was responsible for copying the canonical books of the New Testament and demonstrates that the orthographic patterns in the Gospels can no longer be used to argue for Egyptian provenance of the codex.

The ancient Egyptian Pyramid Texts form the oldest sizable body of religious texts in the world. Discovered in the late nineteenth century, they had been inscribed on the interior stone walls of the pyramid tombs of third-millennium kings and queens. From their content it is clear that they were concerned with the afterlife state of the tomb owner, but the historical meaning of their emergence has been poorly understood. This book weds traditional philological approaches to linguistic anthropology in order to associate them with two spheres of human action: mortuary cult and personal preparation for the afterlife. Monumentalized as hieroglyphs in the tomb, their function was now one step removed from the human events that had motivated their original production.

Since the 1990s there has been an emphasis on the study of ancient Israelite prophecy in its ancient Near East context. Prophecy in the Ancient Near East is the first book-length study that compares prophecy in the ancient Near East by focusing on texts from Mari, the Neo-Assyrian State Archives, and the Hebrew Bible. The author analyzes prophecy in each culture independently before comparisons are made. This method demonstrates how prophecy is a part of the wider system of divination, but also shows where scholarship has unduly imported concepts found in one corpus to the other two. This method, for example, calls into question the supposed link between music and prophecy from the Hebrew Bible to the ancient Near East. In Virtue, Piety and the Law Katharina Ivanyi examines Birgivī Meḥmed Efendī's (d. 981/1573) al-Ṭarīqa al-muḥammadiyya , a major work of pietist exhortation and advice, composed by the sixteenth-century Ottoman jurist, Ḥadīth scholar and grammarian, who would articulate a style of religiosity that had considerable reformist appeal into modern times. Linking the cultivation of individual virtue to questions of wider political, social and economic concern, Birgivī played a significant role in the negotiation and articulation of early modern Ottoman Ḥanafī piety. Birgivī's deep mistrust of the passions of the human soul led him to prescribe a regime of self-surveillance and control that was only matched in rigor by his likewise exacting interpretation of the law in matters of everyday life, as much as in state practices, such as the cash waqf, Ottoman land tenure and taxation.
