Is there a future after death and what does this future look like? What kind of life can we expect, and in what kind of world? Is there another, hopefully better world than the one we live in? The articles collected in this volume, all written by leading experts in the field, deal with the question how ancient Jewish and Christian authors describe "otherworldly places and situations". They investigate why various forms of texts were created to address the questions above, how these texts functioned, and how they have to be understood. It is shown how ancient descriptions of the "otherworld" are taking over and reworking existing motifs, forms and genres, but also that they mirror concrete problems, ideas, experiences, and questions of their authors and the first readers.

Alexander analyses how historic Christian ethical traditions influenced the Church of England's contributions to British pre-war and wartime public policy debates. These traditions include just war, holy war, pacifism, and Christian realism as deployed by such diverse Anglican figures as Cosmo Gordon Lang, William Temple, Herbert Hensley Henson, George Bell, Cyril Forster Garbett, Charles Raven, Percy Hartill, Evelyn Underhill, Vera Brittain, and James Parkes. Additional themes include war as divine judgement, humanitarian intervention, and Church of England responses to the Holocaust. In a world riddled with earthquakes and plagued by epidemics, how did the ancient Greeks cope with, and make sense of, disaster? As our present-day environment is perceived to be increasingly perilous, this book includes the ancient Greek world in the longue durée of disaster discourse. Drawing on anthropological disaster studies, ecocriticism, and cognitive studies, this study considers disaster as a semiotic phenomenon marked by uncertainty. Divining disaster, then, functions as a hermeneutic form of disaster management that alleviates uncertainty and assigns agency, not only in religious practices such as oracle consultation but also in historical and mythological narratives.
