Mediterranean Captivity through Arab Eyes, 1517-1798 /

The post-Lepanto Mediterranean was the scene of "small wars," to use Fernand Braudel's phrase, which resulted in acts of piracy and captivity. Thousands upon thousands of Europeans, Arabs, and Turks were seized into bagnios stretching from Cadiz to Valletta and from Salé to Tripoli. After returning to their homelands, dozens from England and France, Germany and Spain, Malta and Italy wrote about their captivities. Their accounts were printed, distributed, translated, and plagiarized, making captivity a key subject in Europe's Mediterranean history. While Europeans wrote extensively about their ordeals, the Arabs wrote little because their religious culture militated against such writings, which would be construed as expressing disaffection with the will of God. Nor were there detailed records and registers of captives - their names, places of origin, and ransom prices - similar to what was kept in the European archives. Contrary, however, to what some historians have claimed, there was a distinct Arabic narrative of captivity that survives in anecdotes, recollections, reports, miracles, letters, fatawa, exempla and short biographies in both verse and prose. Cumulatively, these sources constitute the Arabic qiṣṣas al-asrā, or stories of the captives, in the native language and idiom of the men and women of the early modern Mediterranean.

Between Worlds : Forging an African Mission Church in Southern Africa /

Between Worlds expands beyond the focus of the previous volume-the British colony of Natal-to the more challenging framework of the American Zulu Mission and its Congregational churches in southeastern Africa between the 1880s and 1920s. This study rejects arguments by many critical scholars, who see Western missionaries at best as adjuncts of the colonial project, imposing an understanding of Western Christianity that inevitably clashes with alien and resistant African cultures. The mission-church relationship in this era also changes dramatically especially in urban environments. The church in South Africa becomes the dominant partner from the 1880s and by 1900 the mission has become an adjunct of the church-an understanding with far-reaching consequences elsewhere in the subcontinent.

Since prehistoric times the Mediterranean has acted as a stage for intense interactions between groups inhabiting regions that are now studied mainly within various sub-fields of ancient studies. The seminar on `Freedom of Association' was held in Reykjavik (Iceland) from 26 to 28 August 1993. It was organised by the Directorate of Human Rights of the Council of Europe in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice of Iceland, and dealt with the following four themes: freedom of association and political democracy; freedom of association and civil society; freedom of association and social democracy; freedom to form and join or not to join trade unions. Written communications were presented on the following subjects: case law of Article 11 of the European Convention on Human Rights, freedom of association and the freedom of associations, freedom of association of immigrants in Europe, freedom of association and public service and freedom of association, labour law and the needs of a democratic society. About one hundred personalities took part: representatives of governments of member States, representatives of non-governmental organisations, members of the European Commission and Court of Human Rights, professors and other interested persons from Central, Western and Eastern Europe competent in the fields covered by the themes of the Seminar. This publication contains the Proceedings of the Seminar: the official speeches made at the opening ceremony, the reports and written communications, the interventions, the final report and the list of participants. Le Séminaire sur la `Liberté d'association' a eu lieu à Reykjavik (Islande) du 26 au 28 août 1993. Il a été organisé par la Direction des Droits de l'Homme du Conseil de l'Europe en collaboration avec le Ministère de la Justice de l'Islande. In Auditive Räume des alten Ägypten Erika Meyer-Dietrich explores the sonic aspects of culture in the 18th Dynasty (1550-1290 BCE). Crucial to the transformation of an audio culture during the Amarna Period are the transfer of traditional sound patterns to new contexts and the position of the heard body in social spaces. Based on the iconography of sonic acting and the representation of urban places as auditive spaces in the rock tombs of Tell el Amarna she convincingly shows how, through sound sequences and the creation or omission of sounds, auditive spaces are given social and religious significance. Her work adds an important new aspect to the understanding of the Amarna Period, which until now has been studied mainly as a visual culture.
