Codex Bezae : studies from the Lunel colloquium, June 1994 /

A group of biblical and patristic scholars and palaeographers met in Lunel, Herault, in June 1995 to discuss the many questions posed by Codex Bezae to our understanding of the use of the Gospels and Acts in early Christianity, and of the text of the New Testament. This collection makes the papers and debates of the colloquium available for a wider discussion. The papers cover two broad areas. The first addresses palaeographical questions. The second covers textual matters, subdivided between the Gospels and Acts. The 24 contributors include J.N. Birdsall, J. Irigoin, L. Holtz, B.D. Ehrman, M.W. Holmes, J.K. Elliott, J.M. Auwers and M.-É. Boismard. There is an introduction by the editors, who also provide analyses of each main section. The range of interests represented by the participants and by the papers has already stimulated fresh developments.

Codex Amrensis 1 , the first volume of the series Documenta Coranica contains images and Arabic texts of four sets of fragments (seventy-five sheets) of the Qurʾān codex, once kept in the ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ Mosque at Al-Fusṭāṭ, and now in the collections of the National Library of Russia, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, The Museum of Islamic Art, Doha and the Nasser D. Khalili Collection of Islamic Art. It includes an extensive introduction, the facsimile of the original, and the full text with annotations.The manuscript, copied during the first half of the 8th century and written in ḥiǧāzī script, contains diacritical signs for about 20% of the letters, without any signs for short vowels. It varies from today's reference editions of the Qurʾān in verse numbering and has a different orthography. Essential reading for students and scholars of the history of the Qurʾān and its written transmission. Le Codex Amrensis 1 rassemble quatre fragments manuscrits, aujourd'hui dispersés dans les collections de la Bibliothèque nationale de France, de la Bibliothèque nationale de Russie, du Musée d'art islamique à Doha et dans la collection de Nasser D. Khalili. Ces fragments appartiennent à un même manuscrit, le Codex Amrensis 1 , qui était autrefois conservé dans la mosquée de ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ à Fusṭāṭ. Ses caractéristiques physiques et textuelles en font un témoin essentiel pour l'histoire du texte coranique et de sa transmission écrite au cours des deux premiers siècles de l'islam. Le présent volume propose aux lecteurs, étudiants et chercheurs, le fac-similé des folios, des annotations concernant son texte ainsi qu'une introduction à l'étude du manuscrit.

The codex Parisino-petropolitanus is one of the earliest witnesses of the handwritten transmission of the Qurʾanic text which has survived to this day. The various fragments which were part of the original manuscript are scattered among various collections; once put together, they provide a unique picture of the state of the text during the 7th century (orthography and textual peculiarities) and of the circumstances in which the canonical version as we know it today took shape physically. The present study, first of its kind, paves the way for a more accurate understanding of the beginning of Islam, based on a significant document, and of the evolution of the Qurʾan during that period. Le codex Parisino-petropolitanus est l'un des plus anciens témoins de la transmission manuscrite du texte du Coran qui aient été conservés. Ses différents fragments sont dispersés entre plusieurs collections; une fois mis ensemble, ils donnent un aperçu unique sur l'état du texte au 7e siècle (orthographe et particularités textuelles) et sur les conditions dans lesquelles s'est organisée matériellement la constitution de la version canonique telle que nous la connaissons. Cette étude, première de son genre, ouvre la voie à une compréhension plus fine, appuyée sur un document significatif, des premiers temps de l'islam et de l'évolution du Coran au cours de cette période.

The Manichaen religion, which was founded by Mani in the Third century AD, adapted various elements from mainstream Christianity. For this reason the relationship between the texts of the two religions remains a lively topic of research today. This volume contains the until-now unpublished dissertation and three further articles of Alexander Böhlig (*1912 † 1996), who was one of the leading scholars in Manichaean studies. In the introduction Peter Nagel offers a biography detailing Böhlig's academic pursuits. The main part of the book reproduces the revised dissertation \'Die Bibel bei den Manichäern\', originally completed in 1947. Written shortly after the discovery of the Medinet Madi Library, the pioneering study weighed the influence of the Bible on Manichaeism. At the end three related articles of Alexander Böhlig, which cannot be found in the collections of selected papers, are reprinted. Die von ihrem Stifter Mani im 3. Jh. gegründete manichäische Religion übernahm aus dem Christentum verschiedenste Elemente, deren Bestimmung und Bewertung bis heute einen Schwerpunkt in der Manichäismusforschung bilden. Der vorliegende Band enthält die bis dato unpublizierte Dissertation sowie drei weitere Artikel von Alexander Böhlig (*1912 † 1996), der einer der führenden Wissenschaftler in der Manichäismusforschung war. In der Einleitung des Buches beschreibt Peter Nagel mit großer Detailkenntnis den wissenschaftlichen Werdegang Böhligs. Der Hauptteil enthält die in den Anmerkungen ergänzte Dissertation "Die Bibel bei den Manichäern", die 1947 abgeschlossen wurde. Kurz nach dem Handschriftenfund von Medinet Madi verfaßt, wurde darin der Einfluß biblischer Schriften auf der Grundlage gänzlich neuen Materiales untersucht. Am Ende des Bandes wurden drei weitere Artikel zum Thema Manichäismus und Christentum aufgenommen, die nicht in den diversen Aufsatzsammlungen des Autoren zu finden sind.

Recent research on the text of the Psalms and Gospels in Greek and in certain versions, principally Coptic, Georgian and Armenian, reveals common characteristics when attempting to separate later editions of a text from its earliest forms. The essays in this collection give concrete examples of the issues involved and suggested explanations for textual changes. Les versions anciennes de la Bible ont un intérêt majeur dans la mesure où elles traduisent un modèle qui n'est pas celui des traductions modernes et conservent ainsi des formes textuelles disparues, souvent très anciennes. C'est en particulier le cas des versions géorgiennes, pour lesquelles des convergences sont apparues entre les recherches menées à Tbilisi et dans diverses équipes européennes. Centré sur les psaumes et les évangiles, le colloque a réuni des communications concernant diverses langues de versions anciennes, en particulier le géogien, mais aussi le copte, le syriaque, l'arménien et l'albanien du Caucase, à partir du grec de la Septante et du Nouveau Testament.

A collection of 40 or so of the author's essays and contributions to the study of Gnosis, the Mandaeans and Manichaeism, published in the course of the past 40 years. Most have been revised for this new edition. Subjects treated include on the one hand source problems (Nag Hammadi, Manichaean finds and texts, Mandaean manuscripts), and on the other hand the situating of the gnostic-cum-Manichaean tradition in the context of late-antique religious history, especially with regard to the early Christian Church and its environment. Contributions on the history of research set out the issues and problems that have arisen from the study of these texts. Particular attention is given to the new finds from Nag Hammadi, which have proved highly significant for a new picture of Gnosis and Manichaeism. The author, who is especially well known for his work of Mandaica, has incorporated this aspect of Gnosis in the overall picture.
