A New Approach to the Vedas : An Essay in Translation and Exegesis /

The Vedas , over the centuries, were interpreted in different forms by different sampradayas, mystics, legalists and religious reformers. It has been subjected to interpretation and re-interpretation by Vedic scholars such as Adi Shankaracharya, Sayanacharya, Mahidhara, Dayananda Saraswati and so forth. This small volume by Coomaraswamy is a comparative study of the Vedas with other traditions, such as Christianity, Gnosticism, Sumerian, Sufi and other religious traditions, which is a modern approach adopted for understanding relationships of non-Indian and Indian values. The text follows a pattern comprising verses and the commentaries made by the author. The book contains the selected verses taken from the Rigveda, Brhadaranayaka and the Maitri Upanishads, written on issues, such as cosmogony, ontology and teleology. Besides, Coomaraswamy offers his commentary based on the philological aspect, as the writers of the Vedas did not have previous knowledge of metaphysics, but had developed ontological knowledge from the existing Sanskrit sources.

Practitioners of any of the paths of self-cultivation available in ancient and medieval China engaged daily in practices meant to bring their bodies and minds under firm control. They took on regimens to discipline their comportment, speech, breathing, diet, senses, desires, sexuality, even their dreams. Yet, compared with waking life, dreams are incongruous, unpredictable-in a word, strange. How, then, did these regimes of self-fashioning grapple with dreaming, a lawless yet ubiquitous domain of individual experience? In Dreaming and Self-Cultivation in China, 300 BCE-800 CE , Robert Ford Campany examines how dreaming was addressed in texts produced and circulated by practitioners of Daoist, Buddhist, Confucian, and other self-cultivational disciplines. Working through a wide range of scriptures, essays, treatises, biographies, commentaries, fictive dialogues, diary records, interpretive keys, and ritual instructions, Campany uncovers a set of discrete paradigms by which dreams were viewed and responded to by practitioners. Social identity and sectarianism in the Qumran movement /

'Identity' and 'sectarianism', two crucial and frequently used concepts in Qumran studies, are here problematized, appraised, and redefined. Two social-scientific theories inform the investigation of the serakhim (rule documents) and pesharim (commentaries). The sociology of sectarianism is presented in retrospect in order to identify appropriate methodological tools for speaking about sectarianism in the ancient context, and for comparing sectarian stances in the serakhim . Furthermore, a social-psychological perspective into identity is introduced for the first time for appreciating the dynamic and context-dependent nature of a person's social identity. The final chapter takes a fresh approach to the study of the pesharim , arguing for the need to read each Pesher as a whole. It analyses the prototypical 'teacher' and brings forward new interpretations of this captivating and cloudy figure.
