Corinth in context : comparative studies on religion and society /

This volume is the product of an interdisciplinary conference held at the University of Texas at Austin. Specialists in the study of inscriptions, architecture, sculpture, coins, tombs, pottery, and texts collaborate to produce new portraits of religion and society in the ancient city of Corinth. The studies focus on groups like the early Roman colonists, the Augustales (priests of Augustus), or the Pauline house churches; on specific cults such as those of Asklepios, Demeter, or the Sacred Spring; on media (e.g., coins, or burial inscriptions); or on the monuments and populations of nearby Kenchreai or Isthmia. The result is a deeper understanding of the religious life of Corinth, contextualized within the socially stratified cultures of the Hellenistic and Roman periods.

From the constructive-engagement vantage point of doing philosophy of language comparatively, this anthology explores (1) how reflective elaboration of some distinct features of the Chinese language and of philosophically interesting resources concerning language in Chinese philosophy can contribute to our treatment of a range of issues in philosophy of language and (2) how relevant resources in contemporary philosophy of language can contribute to philosophical interpretations of reflectively interesting resources concerning the Chinese language and Chinese texts. The foregoing contributing fronts constitute two complementary sides of this project. This volume includes 12 contributing essays and 2 engagement-background essays which are organized into six parts on distinct issues. The anthology also includes the volume editor's theme introduction on comparative philosophy of language and his engaging remarks for three parts.

In Qumran studies, the attention of scholars has largely been focused on the Dead Sea Scrolls, while archaeology has concentrated above all on the settlement. This volume presents the proceedings of an international conference (Lugano 2014) dedicated entirely to the caves of Qumran. The papers deal with both archaeological and textual issues, comparing the caves in the vicinity of Qumran between themselves and their contents with the other finds in the Dead Sea region. The relationships between the caves and the settlement of Qumran are re-examined and their connections with the regional context are investigated. The original inventory of the materials excavated from the caves by Roland de Vaux is published for the first time in appendix to the volume.

The Rāsa Māna ke Pada of Kevalarāma : A Medieval Hindi Text of the Eighth Gaddī of the Vallabha Sect /

This book of the well-known Braj specialist, Prof Dr A.W. Entwistle (University of Washington), focuses on the medieval tradition of the eighth branch of the Vallabha sect. The lengthy introduction deals with the sectarian background of the branch, including a survey of the relevant tradition and history of medieval Vaiṣṇava devotion as a whole and the Vallabha sect in particular. It discusses the structure of the Puṣṭimārga and its gaddīs, or branches, since Rāsa Māna ke Pada is part of the literary heritage of the sect's Eighth Gaddī which, until partition in 1947, was based at Dera Ghazi Khan (now in Pakistan). It gives a , survey of the life and works of the founders of this gaddī, ŚrI Lālajī, and of his grandson Kevalarāma. Due attention is also paid to the language of the text and in an appendix a comparative etymological glossary is given that cites examples from other Braj Bhāṣā authors in order to support interpretations of the more obscure words and idioms. The main part of the book consists of a critical edition of the Rāsa Māna ke Pada , a collection of poems attributed to Kevalarāma, and an annotated translation into English.

More importantly, by exploring the visits through the motives of those that received him, The Reception of 'Abdu'l-Bahá in Britain: East Comes West demonstrates that the "cultic milieu" thesis is incomplete. Focusing on a number of well-known Edwardian Protestant reformers, the book demonstrates that the arrival of eastern forms of religions in Britain penetrated more mainstream Christian forms. This process is set within significant developments in the early formation of the study of religions, the rise of science and orientalism. All these elements are shown to be linked together. Significantly the work argues that the advent of World War One changed the direction of new forms of religion leading to a 'forgetfulness' that has lasted until the present time.

Connectors and Dividers : The Challenges and Prospects for Conflict Transformation in Kashmir and Sri Lanka /

South Asia is characterised by a change in the nature of contemporary armed conflict, a shift from interstate to intrastate armed conflict. This change is closely enmeshed in post-colonial concerns of competing national identities, historical memories, politics of deprivation and legitimacy. It creates challenges for scholars, policymakers and practitioners alike, who are to develop responses to conflicts in South Asia. The liberal, state-centric emphasis in the fields of political science and international relations often precludes a civil society-initiated contextual analysis that focuses on societal tensions. Therefore, there is a significant lacuna in the literature that can inform policy on a practical level. This monograph aims to compensate for this lacuna by providing a comparative analysis of societal Connectors and Dividers (C&D) in Kashmir and Sri Lanka that have the potential to inform policy. This empirical work utilises the C&D analytical tool within the Do No Harm Framework (Anderson 1999), in order to uncover the hidden potential within the tool to aid policy implementation at a national level, and to provide pathways for Conflict Transformation in Kashmir and Sri Lanka. The C&D tool is widely utilised in evaluating humanitarian projects, to assess whether any of the actions may result in an unintended negative repercussion, while progressing with the project outcomes. However, at a national policy-setting level, this tool is unused. It is argued that sustainable conflict transformation hinges on imaginative capacities to transcend vicious cycles of violence. Avicenna in medieval Hebrew translation : Todros Todrosi's translation of Kitab al-najat, on psychology and metaphysics /

In this volume, Gabriella Elgrably-Berzin offers an analysis of the fourteenth-century Hebrew translation of a major eleventh-century philosophical text: Avicenna's Kitāb al-Najāt (The Book of Salvation), focusing on the psychology treatise on physics. The translator of this work was Ṭodros Ṭodrosi, the main Hebrew translator of Avicenna's philosophical writings. This study includes a critical edition of Ṭodrosi's translation, based on two manuscripts as compared to the Arabic edition (Cairo, 1938), and an appendix featuring the section on metaphysics. By analyzing Ṭodrosi's language and terminology and making his Hebrew translation available for the first time, Berzin's study will help enable scholars to trace the borrowings from Todrosi's translations in Jewish sources, shedding light on the transmission and impact of Avicenna's philosophy.
