Changing Religiosities in the Nordic Countries : A Complexity Perspective /

: The book argues that changes in religiosity in the Nordic countries cannot be adequately explained by the dominate all-encompassing generalizations theories of religious change because religious changes are both similar but and diverse in the Nordic countries. For instance, church membership is decreasing in all countries, but the state-church relationship varies. The book argues for the fruitfulness of the Complexity Frame of Reference, a new theoretical framework which is favours a more nuanced analysis of religious change. This is demonstrated in qualitative and quantitative studies of comparative studies and case studies of religious participation, beliefs, rites, and values.

Islamic Ethics and the Trusteeship Paradigm : Taha Abderrahmane's Philosophy in Comparative Perspectives /

: Islamic Ethics and the Trusteeship Paradigm explores the emerging ethical theory of the trusteeship paradigm as developed by the Moroccan philosopher Taha Abderrahmane (b. 1944). The volume, with contributions in English and Arabic, examines the development of this modern Islamic theory of ethics and how it permeates various disciplines: philosophy, theology, legal theory, moral theory, sociology and anthropology, communication, environment and biomedical ethics. The trusteeship paradigm aims to make ethics the compass of human thinking and action in order to overcome the predicaments humanity faces and realize a more just and balanced world. This makes of it one of the principal and profound ethical theories in Islamic scholarship that engages both classical and modern thought.

A Companion to Comparative Theology /

: A Companion to Comparative Theology offers a unique survey of a rapidly developing field of modern theology in 32 chapters coordinated by five editors. Its first part discusses some of the main historical developments in theology and religious studies before 1985 that are relevant for understanding contemporary approaches in comparative theology. The main part of the companion traces developments in five specific areas of comparative research, starting with classical approaches by Christian comparative theologians, and continuing with responses by scholars from Jewish, Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist and Chinese religious comparative perspectives. The final part of the companion highlights a number of new avenues in comparative theology, discussing new methods, new forms of awareness, new partnerships with other fields of study, and finally some preliminary conclusions. Contributors are: Nadeen Mustafa A Alsulaimi, María Enid Barga, Bede Benjamin Bidlack, André van der Braak, Francis X. Clooney, Catherine Cornille, Jonathan Edelmann, Marianne Farina, James L. Perspectives for Space Law in the Twenty-First Century /

: The course evaluates the different phases of the development of space law against the background of the development of public international law. An analysis of current international space law investigates whether the body of law is ready for the challenges of outer space commercialisation and the rise of "New Space" in the 21st century. To accomplish this, it peruses through existing space law treaties, in particular the foundational Outer Space Treaty, as well as other sources of space law. Discovering that international space law developed as a permissive law that would enable the further evolution of space technology yet with sufficient foresight to understand that such evolution will require provisions for the preservation of the international common that is outer space, the author examines several avenues for the future evolution of space law. Among these, the author proposes several notions in order to preserve space law's initial character as a law for the protection of the international commons of "outer space" on the one hand, and pay attention to an equitable distribution of the benefits derived from the resources of outer space on the other hand.

Plato and Xenophon : comparative studies /

: Plato and Xenophon are the two students of Socrates whose works have come down to us in their entirety. Their works have been studied by countless scholars over the generations; but rarely have they been brought into direct contact, outside of their use in relation to the Socratic problem. This volume changes that, by offering a collection of articles containing comparative analyses of almost the entire range of Plato's and Xenophon's writings, approaching them from literary, philosophical and historical perspectives.

The festivals of Opet, the Valley, and the New Year : their socio-religious functions /

: This title compares the religious and social functions of the festivals of Opet, the Valley and the New Year, the first two of which were often regarded by the Egyptians as a pair; the New Year Festival stands out on account of its corpus of surviving material and importance. Until now, detailed study of the New Year Festival has only been carried out with reference to the Greco-Roman period; this study turns its attention to the New Kingdom. The book analyses the broad perspectives that encompass Egyptian religion and cult practices which provided the context not only for worship and prayer, but also for the formation of social identity and responsibility. The festivals are examined in the whole together with their settings in the religious and urban landscapes. The best example is New Kingdom Thebes where large temples and burial sites survive intact today with processional routes connecting some of them.

Plutarch and the New Testament in Their Religio-Philosophical Contexts : Bridging Discourses in the World of the Early Roman Empire /

: How to read Plutarch in the context of New Testament studies? Almost 50 years after the seminal project on the topic led by Hans Dieter Betz, this volume elevates once again the issue's priority. Bridging discourses is a fitting description both of the religio-philosophical spirit of Plutarch, the Platonist philosopher and priest of Apollo at Delphi, and the task of bringing his writings into fruitful dialogue with the writings of the New Testament, Hellenistic Judaism, and Early Christianity. Taken together, these authors constitute the religious Platonism of the early imperial era. Contributions from the fields of New Testament, classics, philosophy, religious studies, and patristics explore various ways of how to establish these bridges.

The Animal Names of the Arab Ancestors : Explaining the Non-human Names of Arab Kinship Groups, Volume 2-1 Appendices /

: In the Arab world, people belong to kinship groups (lineages and tribes). Many lineages are named after animals, birds, and plants. Why? This survey evaluates five old explanations - "totemism," "emulation of predatory animals," "ancestor eponymy," "nicknaming," and "Bedouin proximity to nature." It suggests a new hypothesis: Bedouin tribes use animal names to obscure their internal cleavages. Such tribes wax and wane as they attract and lose allies and clients; they include "attached" elements as well as actual kin. To prevent outsiders from spotting "attached" groups, Bedouin tribes scatter non-human names across their segments, making it difficult to link any segment with a human ancestor. Young's argument contributes to theories of tribal organization, Arab identity, onomastics, and Near Eastern kinship.

From Homer to Solon : Continuity and Change in Archaic Greece /

: The study of Archaic Greece has undergone a fundamental transformation in recent decades. Whereas studies up to the 1980s had favoured narratives that converged on the more tangible reality of the Classical period and emphasized radical change, the increase in archaeological data and the cultural turn have led to an emphasis on long-term developments and continuities. After an introduction to the state of research, the volume offers a wide range of studies under the headings "Approaches on early-Archaic Greece," "Citizens and Citizen-States," and "Leaders and Reformers" ranging from Homer to Solon and circling around the central problem of continuity and change in Archaic Greece.

Post-Emancipation Indenture and Migration : Identities, Racialization and Transnationalism /

: The chapters in this volume contribute to the current scholarship on historical and contemporary migrations by providing new interdisciplinary approaches to historical and contemporary global migratory issues, while simultaneously analyzing ethnicization, identity formation, racialization, citizenship, nationalism, and Tansnationalism. Themes such as border crossing, forced migration, displacement, and statelessness are problematized, and in the process, challenge existing dominant metanarratives. One distinctive feature is how marginalized and silenced voices shift from the margin to the centre of migration narratives, reinforced by the fact that most contributors write from an insider's perspective.

Connectors and Dividers : The Challenges and Prospects for Conflict Transformation in Kashmir and Sri Lanka /

: South Asia is characterised by a change in the nature of contemporary armed conflict, a shift from interstate to intrastate armed conflict. This change is closely enmeshed in post-colonial concerns of competing national identities, historical memories, politics of deprivation and legitimacy. It creates challenges for scholars, policymakers and practitioners alike, who are to develop responses to conflicts in South Asia. The liberal, state-centric emphasis in the fields of political science and international relations often precludes a civil society-initiated contextual analysis that focuses on societal tensions. Therefore, there is a significant lacuna in the literature that can inform policy on a practical level. This monograph aims to compensate for this lacuna by providing a comparative analysis of societal Connectors and Dividers (C&D) in Kashmir and Sri Lanka that have the potential to inform policy. This empirical work utilises the C&D analytical tool within the Do No Harm Framework (Anderson 1999), in order to uncover the hidden potential within the tool to aid policy implementation at a national level, and to provide pathways for Conflict Transformation in Kashmir and Sri Lanka. The C&D tool is widely utilised in evaluating humanitarian projects, to assess whether any of the actions may result in an unintended negative repercussion, while progressing with the project outcomes. However, at a national policy-setting level, this tool is unused. It is argued that sustainable conflict transformation hinges on imaginative capacities to transcend vicious cycles of violence. Wisdom at the Interface between God and Humans /

: At the centre of the anthology are Gen 2-3 and Ez 28:11-19, from which concepts of wisdom and the formation of knowledge concerning the relationship between God and man are examined. The positions identified are categorised within larger Old Testament, ancient Near Eastern and early Jewish horizons. The aim is, on the one hand, to better understand the concept of wisdom or knowledge in Gen 2-3 and Ezek 28 and, on the other hand, to shed light on the superhuman and divine dimensions of wisdom and knowledge in the various textual areas and cultures. The contributions are based on the following key questions: - What makes wisdom and cognition/knowledge a divine or superhuman quality? - How can people attain divine wisdom and participate in it? - What effects and consequences do wisdom and insight/knowledge have for people? - How and to what extent do wisdom and cognition/knowledge affect the relationship between God and man?

Emerging Sectarianism in the Dead Sea Scrolls : Continuity, Separation, and Conflict /

: The essays in this volume consider the nature of the sect known from the Scrolls and its relation to mainline Judaism. Especially notable is a cluster of essays dealing with the Teacher and a review of the archaeology of Qumran.
These essays reflect the lively debate about the sectarian movement of the Scrolls. They debate the degree to which the movement was separated from the rest of Judaism, and whether there was one or several watershed moments in the separation. Notable contributions include a cluster of essays on the Teacher of Righteousness and a thorough survey of the archaeology of Qumran. The texts are problematic in historical research because they rely on biblical stereotypes. Nonetheless, possible interpretations can be compared and degrees of probability debated. The debate is significant not only for the sect but for the nature of ancient Judaism.
