Minority religions under Irish law : Islam in national and international context /

: Minority Religions under Irish Law focuses the spotlight specifically on the legal protections afforded in Ireland to minority religions, generally, and to the Muslim community, in particular. Although predominantly focused on the Irish context, the book also boasts contributions from leading international academics, considering questions of broader global importance such as how to create an inclusive environment for minority religions and how to regulate religious tribunals best. Reflecting on issues as diverse as the right to education, marriage recognition, Islamic finance and employment equality, Minority Religions under Irish Law provides a comprehensive and fresh look at the legal space occupied by many rapidly growing minority religions in Ireland, with a special focus on the Muslim community.

Iron Age Terracotta Figurines from the Southern Levant in Context /

: This interdisciplinary volume is a 'one-stop location' for the most up-to-date scholarship on Southern Levantine figurines in the Iron Age. The essays address terracotta figurines attested in the Southern Levant from the Iron Age through the Persian Period (1200-333 BCE). The volume deals with the iconography, typology, and find context of female, male, animal, and furniture figurines and discusses their production, appearance, and provenance, including their identification and religious functions. While giving priority to figurines originating from Phoenicia, Philistia, Jordan, and Israel/Palestine, the volume explores the influences of Egyptian, Anatolian, Mesopotamian, and Mediterranean (particularly Cypriot) iconography on Levantine pictorial material.

Changing life in Egyptian Alexandria : the testimony of the Islamic cemetery on Kom el-Dikka /

: The volume is a study of a massive set of funerary data from an important site in a city in Egypt, Alexandria, that remains comparatively little known archaeologically for the Islamic period. More than 60 years of research at the cemetery on Kom el-Dikka, carried out by a couple of generations of Polish researchers, have resulted in the exploration of up to 1000 graves, yielding more than 2500 skeletons for anthropological examination.0The bioarchaeological data have been analyzed comprehensively in search of evidence for the quality of life in Alexandria between the 9th and 12th centuries. The changing living conditions of the local population, observed over some 400 years, are discussed in the context of historical and archaeological evidence, supplying a useful frame for putting into perspective the results, minor and major, of the osteological study. The author also addresses the controversial issue of the phasing of the cemetery, delivering a conclusive argument for distinguishing just two phases of burial at Kom el-Dikka in the Islamic period.

Muhammad 'Abduh and his interlocutors : conceptualizing religion in a globalizing world /

: In Muḥammad ʿAbduh and his Interlocutors: Conceptualizing Religion in a Globalizing World , Ammeke Kateman offers an account of Muḥammad ʿAbduh's Islamic Reformism in a context in which ideas increasingly crossed familiar geographical, religious and cultural frontiers. Presenting an alternative to the inadequate perspective of "Westernization", Kateman situates the ideas of Muḥammad ʿAbduh (Egypt, 1849-1905) on Islam and religion amongst those of his interlocutors within a global intellectual field. Ammeke Kateman's approach documents the surprising pluralism of ʿAbduh's interlocutors, the diversity in their shared conceptualizations of religion and the creativity of ʿAbduh's own interpretation. In this way, the conceptualizations of ʿAbduh and his contemporaries also shed light on the diversified global genealogy of the modern concept of religion.
