The papers published in this volume were presented at the Fourth Orion International Symposium (Jerusalem, 1999), whose focus was Jewish history in light of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The first section, "History of the Jews and Judaism," is devoted to specific topics in Jewish history, such as historical references in the Scrolls, comparative studies between the Scrolls and Josephus, and issues of Jewish nationalism. The second section, "Community and Covenant," comprises studies of community, Jewish law, and the concept of covenant. The third section, "Natural Sciences and the Scrolls," reports on examinations of DNA preserved in leather used for the Scrolls, of dust found in jars from Qumran, of the nature of the stitching of the Scrolls, and of the composition of the pottery found at Qumran.

Perspectives for Space Law in the Twenty-First Century /

The course evaluates the different phases of the development of space law against the background of the development of public international law. An analysis of current international space law investigates whether the body of law is ready for the challenges of outer space commercialisation and the rise of "New Space" in the 21st century. To accomplish this, it peruses through existing space law treaties, in particular the foundational Outer Space Treaty, as well as other sources of space law. Discovering that international space law developed as a permissive law that would enable the further evolution of space technology yet with sufficient foresight to understand that such evolution will require provisions for the preservation of the international common that is outer space, the author examines several avenues for the future evolution of space law. Among these, the author proposes several notions in order to preserve space law's initial character as a law for the protection of the international commons of "outer space" on the one hand, and pay attention to an equitable distribution of the benefits derived from the resources of outer space on the other hand.

The Colour of Inequality in South Africa and Brazil offers a radical departure by pivoting quotidian encounters of the historically oppressed 'black racialised underclass' within South Africa's and Brazil's social policy architectures that have been shaped by transhistorical trajectories of hierarchical citizenships. Phiri provides two interventions to scholarship, one on 'the epistemic question' and the second on 'the social question', by offering a critique of a racialised neoliberal global political economy that permeates the two countries' social policies. In this volume, Phiri answers the following questions. First, can social policy resolve the residuals and contradictions of transhistorical inequalities that have become systemic features of these aspirant democracies that aim to forge a new social contract under the epoch of a hierarchical racialised neoliberal capitalism? Second, cognisant that both South Africa's and Brazil's socio-political formations are enmeshed in histories of imperial violence, and a hierarchical racialised global political economy carved through the Trans-Atlantic slavery, what paradigmatic and theoretical tools can be deployed to think about social policy as reparations? Third, cognisant of South Africa's and Brazil's oppressed black majorities, which institutions will create conducive conditions for the flourishing and political aesthetics for those racialised as black? The author's contribution to this oeuvre is first to define 'social policy as reparations' through a process of 'worldmaking'.

In this volume, the relationship between religion and contingency is investigated. Its historical part comprises analyses of important philosophers' interpretations of this relationship, viz. that of Leibniz, Kant, Lessing, Jaspers, and Heidegger. Its systematic part analyses how this relationship should be currently (re-)interpreted. The upshot of the different interpretations is a re-evaluation of the traditional assumption that accepting contingency is detrimental to the pursuit of religion. It is shown that a number of the philosophers scrutinized are not as critical regarding the acceptance of (certain sorts of) contingency in the religious realm as is often thought, and the systematic contributions show that it may be unavoidable, sometimes even desirable, to accept contingency when dealing with religion. This book reflects on the idea that religion represents a force in the public realms of society. The empirical evidence reveals a regained relevance for and commitment to religion re-emerging in secularized countries, but also that it does so in a new form: unexpected, foreign, and maybe even dangerous. If religion regains public significance in social debates, what are its characteristics in terms of topics and interests, actors and parties? The present volume is the result of a team research which gathered biblical scholars, philologists, and historians of religions, on the issue of the multiple \'Interpretations of Moses\' inherited from the ancient mediterranean cultures. The concrete outcome of this comparative inquiry is the common translation and commentary of the fragments from the works of the mysterious Artapanus. The comparative perspective suggested here is not so much methodological, or thematic. It is first of all an invitation to cross disciplinary boundaries and to take account of the contributions of diverse cultures to the formation of a single mythology, in the case, a Moses mythology. With respect to Judea, Greece, Egypt or Rome, and further more an emerging christianity and its \'gnostic\' counterpart, the figure of Moses is at the heart of a cross-cultural dialogue the pieces of which, if they can be seperated for the confort of their specific study, mostly gain by being put together. Ce volume est le fruit d'un travail d'équipe, qui a réuni des biblistes, des philologues, et des historiens des religions autour des multiples « Interprétations de Moïse » que nous ont léguées les cultures de la Méditerranée antique. Le résultat pratique de cette enquête comparatiste culmine dans la traduction et le commentaire à « douze mains » des fragments du mystérieux Artapan, qui ouvrent le volume.
