Contrastive Grammar in Use : Quantitative Perspectives on the Verb Phrase in English and German /

: If there is one speculation about English and German that has pervaded scholarly work within contrastive linguistics as well as language teaching and translation handbooks for decades, it is probably the assumption of a more "verbal style" in English compared to German. Settling this question once and for all, the present book provides a comprehensive comparison of verbal style in English and German that pays due attention to language-internal variation by mode and register at the same time.

Extraterritoriality in Comparative Perspective /

: Extraterritoriality is often understood as an exceptional, sometimes even illegitimate, form of state lawmaking-yet it is pervasive in contemporary practice. Countries around the world rely on extraterritorial regulation to protect local markets, in areas including competition law and data privacy. It is also recognized as a useful strategy to promote international human rights, and to address shared challenges as diverse as transnational crime, tax base erosion, and climate change. The normalization of extraterritoriality as a legal technique, however, has by no means resolved longstanding debates about its place in the international legal order. Containing in-depth studies of fifteen legal systems, this volume provides a critical comparative perspective on those debates.

Comparative Map History and "the History of Cartography" : Methodologies, Institutions, and Idealizations /

: The apparently centuries-old field of "the history of cartography" was invented after 1950 through incomplete historiographies by leading map historians. This monograph uses an empirically grounded analysis of the ways in which early maps have been systematically studied since the early 1800s to offer an innovative account of the practices and institutions of comparative map history in support of Western imperialism and nationalism, and of how the field was reconfigured as the core of a newly idealized discipline of "the history of cartography."

Perspectives for Space Law in the Twenty-First Century /

: The course evaluates the different phases of the development of space law against the background of the development of public international law. An analysis of current international space law investigates whether the body of law is ready for the challenges of outer space commercialisation and the rise of "New Space" in the 21st century. To accomplish this, it peruses through existing space law treaties, in particular the foundational Outer Space Treaty, as well as other sources of space law. Discovering that international space law developed as a permissive law that would enable the further evolution of space technology yet with sufficient foresight to understand that such evolution will require provisions for the preservation of the international common that is outer space, the author examines several avenues for the future evolution of space law. Among these, the author proposes several notions in order to preserve space law's initial character as a law for the protection of the international commons of "outer space" on the one hand, and pay attention to an equitable distribution of the benefits derived from the resources of outer space on the other hand.

Slavic Paganism in Medieval Christian Writings : Ink, Cross, and Pagan Gods /

: How did medieval Christian writers shape our understanding of Slavic paganism? What prompted men like Thietmar of Merseburg, Saxo Grammaticus, Cosmas of Prague, or the anonymous Old Russian preacher to write detailed accounts of Slavic rituals, deities, and nearly forgotten tales? This volume examines the discursive strategies these authors used to describe, distort, and redefine pre-Christian Slavic religion. Through over a dozen case studies, the author explores texts, archaeological evidence, and ethnographic data that reveal how Christianity attempted to reframe pagan traditions. With innovative interpretations and interdisciplinary methods, this book offers novel perspectives on the study of Slavic pre-Christian religions in the Middle Ages.

Plato and Xenophon : comparative studies /

: Plato and Xenophon are the two students of Socrates whose works have come down to us in their entirety. Their works have been studied by countless scholars over the generations; but rarely have they been brought into direct contact, outside of their use in relation to the Socratic problem. This volume changes that, by offering a collection of articles containing comparative analyses of almost the entire range of Plato's and Xenophon's writings, approaching them from literary, philosophical and historical perspectives.

Scribal culture in Ben Sira /

: In Scribal Culture in Ben Sira Lindsey A. Askin examines scribal culture as a framework for analysing features of textual referencing throughout the Book of Ben Sira (c.198-175 BCE), revealing new insights into how Ben Sira wrote his book of wisdom. Although the title of "scribe" is regularly applied to Ben Sira, this designation presents certain interpretive challenges. Through comparative analysis, Askin contextualizes the sage's compositional style across historical, literary, and socio-cultural spheres of operation. New light is shed on Ben Sira's text and early Jewish textual reuse. Drawing upon physical and material evidence of reading and writing, Askin reveals the dexterity and complexity of Ben Sira's sustained textual reuse. Ben Sira's achievement thus demonstrates exemplary, "excellent" writing to a receptive audience.

Territorializing Manchuria : The Transnational Frontier and Literatures of East Asia /

: Xiao Hong, Yom Sang-sop, Abe Kobo, and Zhong Lihe-these iconic literary figures from China, Korea, Japan, and Taiwan all described Manchuria extensively in their literary works. Now China's Northeast but a contested frontier in the first half of the twentieth century, Manchuria has inspired writers from all over East Asia to claim it as their own, employing novel themes and forms for engaging nation and empire in modern literature. Many of these works have been canonized as quintessential examples of national or nationalist literature-even though they also problematize the imagined boundedness and homogeneity of nation and national literature at its core. Through the theoretical lens of literary territorialization, Miya Xie reconceptualizes modern Manchuria as a critical site for making and unmaking national literatures in East Asia. Xie ventures into hitherto uncharted territory by comparing East Asian literatures in three different languages and analyzing their close connections in the transnational frontier. By revealing how writers of different nationalities constantly enlisted transnational elements within a nation-centered body of literature, Territorializing Manchuria uncovers a history of literary co-formation at the very site of division and may offer insights for future reconciliation in the region. Sunni Communities in the Islamic Republic of Iran, 2013-2021 : Securitization, Secularization and Privatization /

: Sunni-Shia relations in Iran offer an analytical guide for the interpretation of inequality, securitization, and immigration. This book reorients our understanding of contemporary Iran by answering still unacknowledged questions: how is the relationship, the interaction and socio-political behaviour between the Islamic Republic and its Sunni minorities? Using unexamined sources and fieldwork, Hessam Habibi Doroh shows a clear insight into the life of Iranian Sunnis, their contention and cooperation with the state during Hasan Rouhani´s presidency. Comparison with the wider region complements this nuanced portrayal of impacts of privatization, secularization, and securitization on the sectarian relations between the state and its minorities. .

The Animal Names of the Arab Ancestors : Explaining the Non-human Names of Arab Kinship Groups, Volume 2-1 Appendices /

: In the Arab world, people belong to kinship groups (lineages and tribes). Many lineages are named after animals, birds, and plants. Why? This survey evaluates five old explanations - "totemism," "emulation of predatory animals," "ancestor eponymy," "nicknaming," and "Bedouin proximity to nature." It suggests a new hypothesis: Bedouin tribes use animal names to obscure their internal cleavages. Such tribes wax and wane as they attract and lose allies and clients; they include "attached" elements as well as actual kin. To prevent outsiders from spotting "attached" groups, Bedouin tribes scatter non-human names across their segments, making it difficult to link any segment with a human ancestor. Young's argument contributes to theories of tribal organization, Arab identity, onomastics, and Near Eastern kinship.

Honour Consciousness, Religion and Gender : Brazilian and Pakistani Lived Experiences in Australia /

: The book explains how honour consciousness shapes the lives of Brazilian and Pakistani women in their countries of origin, and the relationship between honour, religion and gender highlighting the question: is honour consciousness experienced differently by men and women? In this book, I explore how lived experiences of honour consciousness and religion in Brazil and Pakistan are hybridised and operate on a spectrum and are manifested through gender power relations and demonstrated through "moderate" and "extreme" notions of honour consciousness, and how these are transmitted to Australia. These concepts give a new epistemological perspective to the use of Hegel and Foucault within gender studies. See Less

Gellius the satirist : Roman cultural authority in Attic nights /

: This monograph presents an original portrait of the second-century miscellanist Aulus Gellius, based on a detailed reading of Attic Nights against its contemporary background. Highlighting Gellius' use of humour and irony in his portrayals of controversial celebrities such as Favorinus and Herodes Atticus, the book provides a necessary corrective to interpretations of Gellius as an uncritical philhellene or an apolitical bookworm. Distinguishing Gellius' various literary personae (the youthful sectator, the independent researcher, the mature writer and adviser), the book uncovers the many-layered sophistication of Gellius' self-presentation. Noting previously unrecognised allusions to literary works and contemporary events, it offers a fresh perspective on Gellius as a satirical writer, whose Roman cultural programme reflects the ambiguities and complexities of Antonine intellectual life.

Reward, punishment, and forgiveness : the thinking and beliefs of ancient Israel in the light of Greek and modern views /

: This book deals with central and universal issues of reward, punishment and forgiveness for the first time in a compact and comprehensive way. Until now these themes have received far too little attention in scholarly research both in their own right and in their interrelationship. The scope of this study is to present them in relation to the foundations of our culture. These and related issues are treated primarily within the Hebrew Bible, using the methods of literary analysis. The centrality of these themes in all religions and all cultures has resulted, however, in a comparative investigation, drawing attention to the problem of terminology, the importance of Greek culture for the European tradition, and the fusion of Greek and Jewish-Christian cultures in our modern philosophical and theological systems. This broad perspective shows that the biblical personalist understanding of divine authority and of human righteousness or guilt provides the personalist key to the search for reconciliation in a divided world.

Flavius Josephus' Self-Characterisation in First-Century Rome /

: The Jewish War describes the history of the First Jewish Revolt against Rome (66-70 CE). This study deals with one of this work's most intriguing features: why and how Flavius Josephus, its author, describes his own actions in the context of this conflict in such detail. Glas traces the thematic and rhetorical aspects of autobiographical discourse in War and uses contextual evidence to situate Josephus' self-characterisation in a Flavian Roman setting. In doing so, he sheds new light on this Jewish writer's historiographical methods and his deep knowledge and creative use of Graeco-Roman culture.

Purity and Holiness : The Heritage of Leviticus /

: Purity has long been recognized as one of the essential drives which determines humankind's relationship with the holy. Codes of purity and impurity, dealing with such far-ranging topics as 'external stains' and 'inner remorse', represent the physical and 'bodily' side of religious experience and provide the key to the understanding of human orientation to nature, and the structure of society, including even relationships between the sexes. Starting with the Hebrew Bible, a number of articles study some rather neglected passages from both exegetical and cultural-anthropological standpoints. Next, it is shown that the concept of purity is far more central to the New Testament than previously thought. Luke is portrayed as a Jewish-oriented writer. The discussion of purity in Mark is compared with Rabbinical and Qumranic material. Patristic discussions of purity reflect both allegorical and literal interpretations, while rabbinical rulings display a fine sense for detail and realia. Biblical references to illness are interpreted both in Christian and Jewish traditions as a metaphor for immoral behavior. The present collection of studies proceeds far beyond other collections on purity, studying both the medieval and modern periods. Purity rules, in both Christian and Jewish society, do not disappear in the Middle Ages, but become increasingly stronger. Sometimes there appear unexpected and surprising similarities between both societies. Modern society sees a decline in the importance of purity, reflecting a growing ambiguous attitude to the relationship between the body and the holy. A feminist perspective is also provided, examining the intertwined relationship between religion, gender and power. Exegesis, archaeology, liturgy, anthropology and even architecture are all used to study the complex phenomena of purity in their religious and social dimensions from both Christian and Jewish perspectives.

Christian Mission in Seventeenth-Century Taiwan : A Reception History of Texts, Beliefs, and Practices /

: This is the first book-length study of the reception of Christianity and the epistemic outcomes of contact between Protestant and Catholic missionaries and Indigenous Austronesians in the contact zone of seventeenth-century colonial Taiwan. In the Age of European Expansion, Dutch Reformed and Spanish Catholic missionaries attempted to win the souls of Indigenous Austronesian people in Taiwan. Christopher Joby answers the question of how the missionaries tried to overcome the gap between their own cultures and languages and those of the Indigenous Austronesians or Formosans to communicate their versions of the Christian Gospel in the contact zone of seventeenth-century Taiwan, and he analyses the consequences of these encounters. As such, this book is a reception history of the texts, beliefs, and practices that Reformed Protestant and Catholic missionaries introduced to convert the Formosans to their mode of Christianity. Using many linguistic and non-linguistic examples, this approach allows for a 'complementary colour perspective' by comparing the epistemic outcomes of the Dutch Reformed and Catholic missions.

Classics from prior centuries continue to fascinate theatre artists. They never stop thinking of ways to stage these works to reach actual audiences. By referring, in the title of our book, to French director Antoine Vitez's famous quote "make theatre with everything", we want to point out the persistence of a problematic causing artists to not only take into account the evolution of dramatic forms, but also the broader cultural regime, digital for the 21st Century, within which these transpositions take place. The studies gathered in this volume bring a fresh perspective to the contemporary performing practices in Quebec and in Europe using literary texts, and illuminate many theoretical and methodological issues in the process.

The technique of Islamic bookbinding : methods, materials and regional varieties /

: The Technique of Islamic Bookbinding is the first monograph dedicated to the technical development of the bookbinding tradition in the Islamic world. Based on an assessment of the extensive oriental collections in the Leiden University Library, the various sewing techniques, constructions and the application of covering materials are described in great detail. A comparative analysis of the historic treatises on bookbinding provides further insight into the actual making of the Islamic book. In addition, it is demonstrated that variations in time and place can be established with the help of distinctive material characteristics. Karin Scheper's work refutes the perception of Islamic bookbinding as a weak structure, which has generally but erroneously been typified as a case-binding. Instead, the author argues how diverse methods were used to create sound structures, thus fundamentally challenging our understanding of the Islamic bookbinding practice. Karin Scheper has been awarded the De La Court Award 2016 by The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences for her study of the bookbinding tradition in the Islamic world.

World Christianity : Methodological Considerations /

: "World Christianity publications proliferate but the issue of methodology has received little attention. World Christianity: Methodological Considerations addresses this lacuna and explores the methodological ramifications of the World Christianity turn. In twelve chapters scholars from various academic backgrounds (anthropology, religious studies, history, missiology, intercultural studies, theology, and patristics) as well as of multiple cultural and national belongings investigate methodological issues (e.g. methods, use of sources, choosing a unit of analysis, terminology, conceptual categories,) relevant to World Christianity debates. In a closing chapter the editors Frederiks and Nagy converge the findings and sketch the outlines of what they coin as a 'World Christianity approach', a multidisciplinary and multiple perspective approach to study Christianity/ies' plurality and diversity in past and present"--
