This study is the first to examine the history and composition of the library of Aḥmad Pasha al-Jazzār (d. 1804), the famous governor of northern Palestine in the late eighteenth century, on the basis of the inventory of the library's holdings. The chapters in the first volume situate the library, one of the largest in Palestinian history prior to the end of the nineteenth century, in its historical context, examine the materiality of the collection based on a study of the extant manuscripts and other historical sources, and analyse the contents of the library. The second volume consists of a facsimile of the inventory, a critical edition and index.

This book is the first full text and translation of a prosimetric tale from the rich repertoire of Central and West Asian bards to be published with ready access to recordings of both the prose narration and the sung verse. In Iranian Khorasan, bards known as bakhshi present tales that in other regions are performed wholly in a Turkic language with prose narration in Persian, Khorasani Turkish or Kurmanji Kurdish and most verses in Turkish. We compare portions of the full performance transcribed here with excerpts from two performances of Iranian bakhshis in the 1970s. Three introductory chapters and a commentary discuss musical and verbal dimensions of the bakhshi's art in relation to relevant social, historical, and literary contexts.

This volume deals with Sayyid Quṭb's commentary, compared to 'Abduh's and Riḍā's 'Tafsīr al-Manār', discussing his method of reading the Qur'ān, elements of his dogmatic theology, of his faith and spirituality and of the Muslim practices.The book then evaluates his doctrine concerning Judaism and Christianity, the status of their followers in the ideal Islamic society to be reinstated, Muslim family and Islamic emancipation of women. It evaluates which Islamic State will be able to accomplish and lead this Qur'ānic society, and what will be its 'dynamic Law' and the new economic order and social justice. The book finally looks at the essential role the permanent war-for-God should have in the face of new worldwide anti-Islamic paganism, and it concludes with extremism (of Quṭb and, more, of the 'Quṭbists') and with the promising muslim thinking in resistance to it. The large Selection of texts of 'Fī ẓilāl...', translated by W. Shepard, is very valuable.

Practitioners of any of the paths of self-cultivation available in ancient and medieval China engaged daily in practices meant to bring their bodies and minds under firm control. They took on regimens to discipline their comportment, speech, breathing, diet, senses, desires, sexuality, even their dreams. Yet, compared with waking life, dreams are incongruous, unpredictable-in a word, strange. How, then, did these regimes of self-fashioning grapple with dreaming, a lawless yet ubiquitous domain of individual experience? In Dreaming and Self-Cultivation in China, 300 BCE-800 CE , Robert Ford Campany examines how dreaming was addressed in texts produced and circulated by practitioners of Daoist, Buddhist, Confucian, and other self-cultivational disciplines. Working through a wide range of scriptures, essays, treatises, biographies, commentaries, fictive dialogues, diary records, interpretive keys, and ritual instructions, Campany uncovers a set of discrete paradigms by which dreams were viewed and responded to by practitioners. He shows how these paradigms underlay texts of diverse religious and ideological persuasions that are usually treated in mutual isolation. The result is a provocative meditation on the relationship between individuals' nocturnal experiences and one culture's persistent attempts to discipline, interpret, and incorporate them into waking practice.
