Focusing on the Italian architect and sculptor Bartolomeo Berrecci, this monograph examines an important subset of his sepulchral works-recumbent statuary-and offers insights into their patronage, reception, and interpretation. Berrecci's exploration of this sculptural type predates its eventual spread beyond Italy, Spain, and Poland. Indeed, he proved so successful that well over 200 statues can still be found in present-day Poland and Lithuania, Latvia, Belarus, Ukraine and Sweden. Although he mainly produced them for Catholic clients, examples of such monuments also exist in Lutheran, Calvinist and Orthodox settings. Mediaeval Manichean Book Art focuses on a corpus of c. one hundred fragments of exquisitely illuminated manuscripts that were produced under the patronage of the Turkic-speaking Uygurs in the Turfan region of East Central Asia between the 8th and 11th centuries CE, and used in service of the local Manichaean church. By applying a codicological approach to the analysis of these sources, this study casts light onto a lost episode of Central Asian art history and religious book culture. Each of the five chapters in this book accomplishes a well-defined goal. The first justifies the formation of the corpus . The second examines its dating on the basis of scientific and historical evidence. Chapter three assesses the artistry of their bookmakers, scribes, and illuminators. The fourth documents the patterns of page layout preserved on the fragments. The final chapter analyses the contextual relationship of their painted and written contents . Mediaeval Manichaean Book Art represents a pioneer study in its subject, research methodology, and illustrations. Alternative protein sources are urgently required as the available land area is not sufficient to satisfy the growing demand for meat. Insects have a high potential of becoming a new sector in the food and feed industry, mainly because of the many environmental benefits when compared to meat production. This will be outlined in the book, as well as the whole process from rearing to marketing. The rearing involves large scale and small scale production, facility design, the management of diseases, and how to assure that the insects will be of high quality (genetics). The nutrient content of insects will be discussed and how this is influenced by life stage, diet, the environment and processing. Technological processing requires decontamination, preservation, and ensuring microbial safety. The prevention of health risks (e.g. allergies) will be discussed as well as labelling, certification and legislative frameworks. Additional issues are: insect welfare, the creation of an enabling environment, how to deal with consumers, gastronomy and marketing strategies. Examples of production systems will be given both from the tropics (palm weevils, grasshoppers, crickets) and from temperate zones (black soldier flies and house flies as feed and mealworms and crickets as food). South Asian history of early modern period especially the provincial sultanates is a comparatively less explored area. The emergence of Jaunpur Sultanate in the middle Gangetic belt at the close of the fourteenth century enthused a new dynamism in the economy and culture of the region. Its mono-metallic copper based currency enabled this tiny and short-lived kingdom to maintain its economy and richness of culture. The last work on Jaunpur Sultanate had come out about half a century ago (Saeed, 1972) and it covered only political and cultural history. The present work explores how the Sharqi rulers, with constant help and support of their subjects specially the Rajput allies and landlords maintained a regular flow of money that enabled them to give a new shape to the economy of the entire middle Gangetic belt. Not only new crafts were introduced and promoted by them, new market centres also emerged during the period of this vibrant regional kingdom. Along with extensive use of contemporary Persian literature and numismatic sources the author has for the first time meticulously explored contemporary Hindi literature resources like Kirtilata and Ardhakathanaka to delineate his contention. Hindi epic love-lores or Premakhyan like Chandayan, Mrigavati, Madhumalati and others have been for the first time tapped here at length to trace the influence of the Sharqi kingdom in the field of composite culture. It is hoped that the volume will generate enthusiasm for inquisitive scholars, general readers, students and researchers in India and abroad.
