Extraterritoriality is often understood as an exceptional, sometimes even illegitimate, form of state lawmaking-yet it is pervasive in contemporary practice. Countries around the world rely on extraterritorial regulation to protect local markets, in areas including competition law and data privacy. It is also recognized as a useful strategy to promote international human rights, and to address shared challenges as diverse as transnational crime, tax base erosion, and climate change. The normalization of extraterritoriality as a legal technique, however, has by no means resolved longstanding debates about its place in the international legal order. Containing in-depth studies of fifteen legal systems, this volume provides a critical comparative perspective on those debates.

Excursions into Syntactic Databases /

This book is about syntactic databases (a.k.a. treebanks), collections of text material in which the syntactic relations have been made visible. It starts off with a general intro-duction to the subject and then continues with three in-depth investigations of more specialized aspects. In the introduction, syntactic databases are first placed in the larger context of linguistic databases , text collections with a broader linguistic annotation than just a syntactic one. Then some examples of syntactic databases are given, illustrating the range of annotation actually encountered. The introduction is completed with an investigation of database management systems for syntactic databases. The first in-depth investigation concerns the treatment of ambiguous structures in syntactic analysis trees, focussing on a very efficient representation for such structures and the means to create this representation. Next, classroom use of syntactic databases is examined. A computer program for this purpose, CLUES, is discussed, along with a suggested series of syntax exercises. The final subject is the importance of including function and attribute information in the annotation of texts. The central line of investigation here is a probabilistic parsing experiment in which the use of function and attribute information is the main variable.

Yet, despite their ubiquity, we still know surprisingly little about how these constructions have evolved across languages and through history. This book breaks new ground by tracing, for the first time, the development of counterfactual systems across different constructions, texts, linguistic registers, and historical stages. Location matters, for critics, readers and texts. This book explores the notion of location not simply as geographical, historical, or cultural context but as a standpoint, a position, an orientation, a necessarily partial and particular perspective, however ample it may be, from which writers represent and imagine their worlds. However, the constraint of location in the form of a reductive geographical marker has been felt most acutely by writers of the Global South. This book explores how modern and contemporary writers from Africa and South Asia consider their place in the world, in world literature, and in the wider geographical regions or national literary histories to which their work is identified with. What worlds do these literatures simultaneously inhabit and create? What networks do writers and institutions, specific genres and works of literature, but also circuits of readership, translation and publishing, produce?
