This comparative handbook is intended to provide scholars of the New Testament with detailed, systematic and accurate resources concerning the Judaic context of the gospel of Mark. It aims to serve as a powerful tool to assist the reader - and commentator - in understanding and commenting on the gospel of Mark. Introductions are provided to help with issues of dating and the development of the literatures concerned. Possible interpretations are also presented, where suitable.

Ancient mosaic pavements : themes, issues, and trends : selected studies /

This publication is engaged in issues, trends, and themes depicted on mosaic pavements discovered in Israel, the Gaza Strip and Petra (the provinces of ancient Palaestina Prima, Secunda and Tertia) with comparable floors in Jordan (Arabia). The majority of the mosaic pavements discussed in this study are dated to the 4th-8th centuries CE. Mosaic pavements were the normal medium for decorating the floors of synagogues, churches, monasteries, and chapels, as well as public and private buildings. Inscriptions found on many of the pavements commemorate the donors, refer to the artists, and sometimes date the mosaics. The ornamentation of the mosaics in this region is remarkable, rich, and varied in its themes and provides many insights into the contemporary artistic and social cultures.

John Emerton was Regius Professor of Hebrew at Cambridge University from 1968 to 1995 and is a former Editor of Vetus Testamentum and its Supplements (1975-97). His work is characterised by profound learning and rigorous argument. He published detailed articles on a wide range of subjects, not only on the Hebrew language but also on Biblical texts, Semitic philology and epigraphy, Pentateuchal criticism and other central issues in Biblical scholarship, and biographical essays on some modern scholars. The forty-eight essays in this volume have been selected to provide both an overview of Emerton's influential work in all these fields and easier access to some items which are no longer readily available.

Cet essai est la première étude d'envergure sur la science-fiction française (SFF) du XXe s. (jusqu'à 1968). Évitant le double écueil de l'élitisme et du populisme, l'auteur propose de voir la science-fiction comme une poétique de l'altérité dans les domaines du socio-historique et du bio-écologique. À partir des études d'historiens et de théoriciens majeurs de la science-fiction (D. Suvin, I.F. Clarke, R. Scholes, G. Klein, M. Angenot), des travaux sur l'imaginaire social (C. Castoriadis) et sur la sociologie des biens symboliques de P. Bourdieu, il tente de répondre à une série de questions: comment, en dépit de leur état florissant, l'anticipation et le roman scientifique français n'ont-ils pu déboucher sur un mouvement comparable à celui de la science-fiction américaine des années 1920? À quoi attribuer la crise persistante de la science-fiction française, avant et après les années 1950, date de la découverte de la science-fiction américaine en France par l'action notamment de Boris Vian et Raymond Queneau? L'auteur a cherché une réponse à ces questions dans la poétique sociale du genre. Retournant aux textes, il réalise une vue en coupe de la SFF à travers cinq modèles socio-discursifs majeurs représentés par Rosny Aîné, Maurice Renard, Jacques Spitz, B.R. Bruss, Stefan Wul.
