The collection of Greek vases in the Detroit Institute of Arts has been compiled over the course of the twentieth century to reflect the range of painting styles and shapes which characterize the period from the eighth through fourth centuries B.C. This catalogue is the first publication of that collection, comprising those vases from Corinth and Athens with painted decoration. The physical and painted characteristics of each vase are recorded, with an attribution to a painter or group, and a date. The relationship of the painted decoration to other Greek painted vases, religious or social institutions is discussed. The catalogue will be of interest to specialists in Greek vase painting, and those interested in Greek art and its modern collecting.

This text centres on the anthropological study of two late 8th century BC monumental graves, designated as T144 and T105, at the ancient necropolis of Paroikia at Paros. The study investigates inter-island features of the human record, observable as ingrained traces in the skeletal record. These have particular significance as they may relate to Parian endeavours in the northern Aegean to colonise Thasos. Through the 'Paros Polyandreia Anthropological Project,' it was possible to gain insights into aspects of the human environment and experience in the Parian context. A considerable population sample of cremated male individuals was available, shedding light on trends that would have involved Thasos; and discerning further facets of the human condition during the Late Geometric to the Early Archaic periods in the ancient Hellenic world.

Of Proclus' immense philosophical system, the part concerning the natural world may well be the most fascinating. Traditional scholarship tends to downplay that part of Neoplatonism, in favour of idealism, but recently this attitude is changing. This study contributes to that development by showing how Proclus' natural philosophy relates to theology, while remaining a science in its own right. This volume takes a new look at one of the greatest works of Hellenistic mathematics, Apollonius of Perga's Conica . It provides a long overdue alternative to H.G. Zeuthen's Die Lehre von den Kegelschnitten im Altertum . The central part of the volume contains a historically sensitive analysis and interpretation of the entire Conica , both from the standpoint of its individual books and of the text as a whole. Particular attention is given to Books V-VII, which have had scant treatment until now. Ornamental Wall Painting in the Art of the Assyrian Empire /

This study brings together the archaeological record and the pictorial documentation of ornamental wall painting produced in Assyria, from the thirteenth to the seventh centuries B.C. Nimrud, Khorsabad, Til Barsip, and Tell Sheikh Hamad, are among the ancient sites where impressive wall paintings were discovered; unfortunately most of these discoveries now exist in drawings and photographs only. Ornamental wall painting created a colorful and meaningful visual impact to the rooms of residences belonging to the Assyrian kings. The assembled material demonstrates that the polychrome and black-and-white decorated bands of geometric, floral, figural, and animal motifs were arranged into a variety of formulaic designs. Particular attention is given to the changing trends in the selection and combination of motifs, some of which had symbolic meaning. The chronology of the wall paintings at Til Barsip and the accompanying discussion of textile patterns are of special interest to the art historian. This book illustrates the ornamental wall paintings as recorded in the excavation reports.
