Since ancient times Leviathan and other monsters from the biblical world symbolize the life-threatening powers in nature and history. They represent the dark aspects of human nature and political entities and reveal the supernatural dimensions of evil. Ancient texts and pictures regarding these monsters reflect an environment of polytheism and religious pluralism. Remarkably, however, the biblical writings and post-biblical traditions use these venerated symbols in portraying God as being sovereign over the entire universe, a theme that is also prominent in the reception of these texts in subsequent contexts. This volume explores this tension and elucidates the theological and cultural meaning of 'Leviathan' by studying its ancient Near Eastern background and its attestation in biblical texts, early and rabbinic Judaism, Christian theology, Early Modern art, and film.

Meanings of Antiquity is the first dedicated study of how the oldest Japanese myths, recorded in the eighth-century texts Kojiki and Nihon shoki , changed in meaning and significance between 800 and 1800 CE. Generations of Japanese scholars and students have turned to these two texts and their creation myths to understand what it means to be Japanese and where Japan fits into the world order. As the shape and scale of the world explained by these myths changed, these myths evolved in turn. Over the course of the millennium covered in this study, Japan transforms from the center of a proud empire to a millet seed at the edge of the Buddhist world, from the last vestige of China's glorious Zhou Dynasty to an archipelago on a spherical globe. Analyzing historical records, poetry, fiction, religious writings, military epics, political treatises, and textual commentary, Matthieu Felt identifies the geographical, cosmological, epistemological, and semiotic changes that led to new adaptations of Japanese myths. Rashīd al-Dīn Maybudī (fl. early 6th/12th century) was a Persian scholar and mystic who is best known for his voluminous commentary on the Qurʾān, the Kashf al-asrār wa-ʿuddat al-abrār . The commentary breaks down into 465 'sessions' ( majlis , here: 'lectures') around a number of verses and their explanation. Each session divides into three 'rounds' ( nawba ): 1. the Arabic text and its Persian translation, 2. a standard commentary, and 3. a mystical appreciation of the deeper levels of the text. While the first two rounds are equally in Arabic and Persian, round three is usually mostly in Persian, indicating that Maybudī wanted to ensure that his words were comprehensible to interested non-academics, notably to mystics. Annabel Keeler's Sufi Hermeneutics: The Qur'an Commentary of Rashīd al-Dīn Maybudī , offered in Persian translation here, analyses Maybudī's work from three angles: mystical hermeneutics, Maybudī's borrowings from the mystic ʿAbdallāh Anṣārī (d. 481/1088), and his mystical interpretation of the Qurʾān on prophets.

The Qurʾān is a complex text, and it has been regarded as such since the very beginning. Qurʾān interpretation or tafsīr was already practiced by the Prophet's nephew ʿAbdallāh b. al-ʿAbbās, who used folklore and poetry to interpret his uncle's revelations. With the passing of time, Qurʾānic exegesis developed from a mere branch of tradition ( ḥadīth ) into a full-fledged, independent discipline. The earliest Persian Qurʾān commentary was a translation of Abū Jaʿfar al-Ṭabarī's (d. 311/923) Jāmiʿ al-bayān ʿan taʾwīl āy al-Qurʾān , made in 345/956. The Persian commentary contained in the present volume was composed in 890/1485 in Herat by Wāʿiẓ Kāshifī (d. 910/1504-05), a prolific author, preacher and mystic of the Timurid era. Originally meant to comprise four volumes, it was discontinued halfway the fourth sura, and is only partially reproduced in the present edition. Kāshifī's detailed, literary commentary stands out by his unique use of the esoteric properties of letters and numbers.

The study of the Elenchos (c. 225 CE) involves the whole range of ancient interpretative traditions concerned with Greek Philosophy, from Aristotle to the Late Neoplatonists. The present inquiry places Hippolytus' important reports about the Greek philosophers in the context of these traditions and so is able to illuminate not only what he has to offer but also to increase our knowledge of the traditions he depends on. For him the Pythagoreanizing current in Pre-Neoplatonism is of paramount importance. Accordingly, he constructs a succession ( diadoche ) starting with Pythagoras and including Empedocles, Heraclitus, Plato, Aristotle and the Stoics, and argues that the diadoche of the Gnostic heresiarchs is parasitical on its Pythagorean predecessor. A new assessment of the sources used - the first serious attempt since that of Diels in 1879 - hinges on an analysis of Hippolytus' method of presentation, which is a blend of cento and exegesis geared to his anti-Gnostic purpose.

Ancient doxography, particularly as distilled in the work on problems of physics by Aëtius, is a vital source for our knowledge of early Greek philosophy up to the first century BCE. The present volume contains 19 essays written between 1989 and 2009 in which the authors grapple with various aspects of the doxographical tradition and its main representatives.
