Contesting religious identities : transformations, disseminations, and mediations /
:
Religion is a hot topic on the public stages of 'secular' societies, not in its individualized liberal or orthodox form, but rather as a public statement, challenging the divide between the secular neutral space and the religious. In this new challenging modus, religion raises questions about identity, power, rationality, subjectivity, law and safety, but above all: religion questions, contests and even blurs the borders between the public and the private. These phenomena urge to rethink what are often considered to be clear differences between religions, between the public and the private and between the religious and the secular. In this volume scholars from a range of different disciplines map the different aspects of the dynamics of changing, contesting and contested religious identities.

Contested issues in Christian origins and the New Testament : collected essays /
:
In a collection of essays spanning some 35 years, Luke Timothy Johnson takes on some of the most contested issues in the study of Christian Origins and the New Testament --- from the historical Jesus and the Jesus of the Gospels, through exegetical studies of Luke-Acts and Paul, to questions pertaining to the development of early Christian history, relations with Judaism, the uses of polemic, sexuality, and law. Johnson's work is characterized by close attention to texts and a concern for methodological rigor. Far from representing scholarly consensus, these essays consistently display independence of judgment, whether concerning the authorship of Paul's disputed letters, the legitimacy of the quest for the historical Jesus, or the toxic character of some early Christian texts.

The Many Faces of Christianism : The 'Russian World' in Europe /
:
Is the Russian invasion of Ukraine a 'Holy War'? This book offers insights into the complex ideology of the Russki Mir or 'Russian World', which must be understood as Russian-shaped world order or peace - but above all, a claim to the sacred. The collected essays describe how Far Right politics in Europe and its resonances with the Russian World nod to the changing meaning of Christianism, defying and transforming the categories of religion and politics, and challenging common conceptions of the role of Christianity in European politics.

Tracking Global Wokeism /
:
In this volume, nineteen authors ask: does wokeness exist in the non-Western world? And if yes, is it imported from America or can it also have its own vernacular roots? Wokeness has helped advance the cause of social justice in many domains. However, a cursory search on the internet can yield the impression that 'woke' is now predominantly used in a negative fashion. The present book approaches woke from unusual philosophical angles that do not adhere to either pro or counter positions but that try to transcend purely ideological perspectives. The book shifts the debate to an international or global level by asking whether Wokeism also exists in the non-Western world.

A future without borders? : theories and practices of cosmopolitan peacebuilding /
:
A Future without Borders (FWB) offers an explanation of why the recent, but by now distant, movements of the "Occupy Wall Street" activists have repeated themselves across the globe. The book demonstrates some of the processes inherent to an adapting cosmopolitanism (a call for civility, a call for Justice, a call for a collective responsibility or accountability) that is not individualistic in nature. Until recently, the statal/national problems understood as politico-economic failures were conceived as isolated problems, failures of statal institutions that are particular to certain countries. FWB contests the Westphalian logic that explains these circumstances, as national failures and argues instead that the conditions be assessed as extensions of the global economic and ideological failures that they surely are. Contributors are: Anton Allahar, Arnold Farr, Andrew Fiala, Pierre-André Gagnon, Bill Gay, Kurtis Hagen, Linden F. Lewis, Tracey Nicholls, Richard T. Peterson, Jorge Rodriguez, Eddy M. Souffrant, and Hilbourne A. Watson.

The high church revival in the Church of England : arguments and identities /
:
In The High Church Revival in the Church of England , new insights are opened up into one of the most significant movements of devotional and liturgical revival in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Attending closely to the social history of the movement, as well as to its continental connections and its theological complexity, this research re-evaluates its historiographical legacy in the light of recent research and controversy. Traditional interpretations of High Churchmanship have presented it either as a heroic rediscovery of the real essence of Anglicanism, or as an eccentric distortion of it. This volume asserts instead its theological creativity and its popular roots as a permanent enrichment of the Anglican tradition, whilst also analysing and describing the nature and limits of its growth.

Alternative Evangelicals : Challenging Nationalism in Interwar Romania's Multi-ethnic Borderlands /
:
Evangelicals in interwar Romania were a vibrant mix of ethnicities, languages, and social statuses. Jews, Roma, Germans, Hungarians, Serbs, Ukrainians, and Russians sang, prayed, and preached in their native languages. Romanian statesmen perceived them as a danger for the construction of a strong post-WWI national identity. The lived religion of interwar Romanian evangelicals and their struggle through music for legitimacy demonstrates the close ties between national self-understanding and religion. The diverse groups of Romanian evangelicals reveal how minorities in 20th century Europe challenged established religious concepts and constructed their new identities. "Finally a book on Romanian history that unpacks the day to day experiences of ordinary people and how they built churches and communities. Ploscariu tells her stories through the voices and experiences of individuals from ethnic and religious minorities, showing us how they saw their world, not just what the authorities thought about them. This book complicates Romanian religious history in wonderful and surprising ways. It will be the definitive work on the subject for many years to come." Roland Clark, University of Liverpool Author of Sectarianism and Renewal in 1920s Romania "Drawing on a diverse range of often untapped sources, Iemima Ploscariu's exploration of the history of evangelicals in interwar Romania brings vividly to life the experiences of a multiethnic community defined by their faith. She explores how, through their everyday practices - most notably their active musical life - these groups both contested the homogenizing nationalization policies of the Romanian state and carved out a place for themselves in Romanian society. This book contributes significantly to our understanding of the social and religious history of interwar Romania and to the transnational evangelical expansion of the era." Heather Coleman, University of Alberta Author of Russian Baptists and Spiritual Revolution, 1905-1929 "Here is a masterful reconstruction of the everyday life of evangelical communities in interwar Romania and their members' intricate personal relationships. This excellent study is a must-read for any scholar of nationalism who wants to understand how diverse religious and ethnic minorities struggled and thrived in a nationalising European state." Jerusalem and Other Holy Places as Foci of Multireligious and Ideological Confrontation /
:
Jerusalem and Other Holy Places as Foci of Multireligious and Ideological Confrontation brings together the papers that were read at an international conference at the Schechter Institute in Jerusalem in May 2018. The contributions to this volume develop a multi-disciplinary perspective on holy places and their development, rhetorical force, and oft-contested nature. Through a particular focus on Jerusalem, this volume demonstrates the variety in the study of holy places, as well as the flexibility of geographic and historical aspects of holiness.

The Exegetical and the Ethical : The Bible and the Academy in the Public Square. Essays for the Occasion of Professor John Barton's 70th Birthday /
:
Exegesis has ethical dimensions. This is the case for the Bible, which has a foundational status in traditional perspectives that is simultaneously contested in the modern world. This innovative essay collection, largely about Hebrew Bible/Old Testament texts, is written by an international team - all Doktorkinder of a pioneer in this area, Professor John Barton, whose 70th birthday this volume celebrates. With interdisciplinary angles, the essays highlight the roles and responsibilities of the biblical scholar, often located professionally between religious and secular domains. This reflects a broader reality: all readers of texts are engaged ethically in the public square of ideas.
