Life at the Bottom of Babylonian Society is a study of the population dynamics, family structure, and legal status of publicly-controlled servile workers in Kassite Babylonia. It compares some of the demographic aspects proper to this group with other intensively studied past populations, such as Roman Egypt, Medieval Tuscany, and American slave plantations. It suggests that families, especially those headed by single mothers, acted as a counter measure against population reduction (flight and death) and as a means for the state to control this labor force. The work marks a step forward in the use of quantitative measures in conjunction with cuneiform sources to achieve a better understanding of the social and economic forces that affected ancient Near Eastern populations.

The Argonautica was said to have been the source of a quarrel between Apollonius, who wrote what looks like an epic poem, and Callimachus, who denounced the writing of epic poetry. Although the quarrel did not take place in the real world, its issue controls the poem. The heroes are determined to take part in a Homeric epic, which the Callimachean narrator refuses to write. Drawing on the methods of modern literary theorists but eschewing the jargon, DeForest shows how Apollonius uses the literary dispute in Alexandria to give a three-dimensional quality to his poem. The aim of this work is to recover classical Roman assumptions about women on the basis of the surviving linguistic data. The author provides a control to her study of the connotations of the major Latin words for women in the form of a corresponding examination of how Roman authors use the various words for men. The resulting analysis throws light not only on Roman gender vocabulary but also on Roman cultural perceptions of class, moral worth and nationality. Furthermore, the author's detailed discussions of strictly linguistic evidence enable her to offer several original and persuasive insights about the traditional Latin literary representation of women. Understanding the connotative range of gender terms such as homo , vir , femina , mulier also reveals the value judgments made by ancient authors on male and female behaviour and can even be applied as a tool of historical analysis.

Our understanding of the operation of law beyond the nation State has been deeply shaped by two great disciplines: public and private international law. Yet surprisingly little systematic attention has been devoted to the relationship between the two. The public-private divide operates to separate the law that is concerned with the exercise of political power by States and the policy choices that we make for public purposes - the domain of public international law - from the exercise of economic power by corporations, regulated largely by private international law. In this first panoptic survey of the relation between the two fields, McLachlan argues that the neglect of this interface is highly consequential for our understanding of law's capacity to control the State and the corporation. Both are constructs of the law. But the function of law is not merely to empower and clothe these artificial persons with legal authority; it is also to impose legal responsibility, where the exercise of power gives rise to a breach and causes injury to others. Only by placing these two great systems side-by-side, can we see clearly where that responsibility lies and the necessary development of the law.

The Portuguese mariners under Vasco da Gama in search of spices landed on the Malabar Coast at the fag end of the fifteenth century. Slowly they established factories, fortresses and other commercial establishments in places allotted to them by the local rulers, while their missionary zeal brought them in contact with people of the Malabar Coast, both non-Christians as well as St. Thomas Christians. The economic, social and cultural legacy of the Portuguese interaction with the Malabar Coast is clearly discernible in the geographic segment now known as Kerala. Once the Portuguese obtained territorial possessions outside the Malabar Coast, they commenced to establish political control and introduced European administrative apparatus in Asia. However, these colonies could not be kept under the Portuguese sway forever. They made attempts to liberate themselves from the colonial authority of the Portuguese finally leading to their liberation. During the Portuguese presence in India for over 450 years, innumerable social transformations took place. This book is an attempt to explore the themes related to economy, trade, commercial ventures, urbanization, socio-cultural interactions as well as the various stages of movements connected with the liberation of Portuguese settlements in India.
