The Coptic life of Aaron : critical edition, translation and commentary /

: "The Life of Aaron is one of the most interesting and sophisticated hagiographical works surviving in Coptic. The work contains descriptions of the lives of ascetic monks, in particular Apa Aaron, on the southern Egyptian frontier in the fourth and early fifth centuries, and was probably written in the sixth century. Even though the first edition of this work was already published by E.A. Wallis Budge in 1915, a critical edition remained outstanding. In this book Jitse H.F. Dijkstra and Jacques van der Vliet present not only a critical text, for the most part based on the only completely preserved, tenth-century manuscript, but also a new translation and an exhaustive commentary addressing philological, literary and historical aspects of the text".

The Coptic Monastery at the First Pylon of Karnak Temple /

: In the second half of the first century early Christianity was on the rise in Egypt. From this time on early Christians of Egypt adapted their life, art, habits, names, daily life language, and worship. Christianization of ancient pagan sites became a phenomenon within the Roman Empire. Early Christians reused ancient temples and tombs as parts of monasteries and cities. Egypt is a special case when talking about temple conversion in late antiquity. This study focuses on the early Christian reuse at the first pylon of Karnak temple on the city of Luxor in Upper Egypt.  doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.5913/jarce.53.2017.a005

: In this collaborative volume, the editors examine the role of Judeo-languages in literary, social, religious, and cultural channels of knowledge transfer, particularly in the dissemination of oral and written traditions beyond the core intellectual elite to the secondary Jewish intelligentsia and broader audiences. This phenomenon is evident in Yiddish, Judeo-Spanish, Judeo-Arabic, Judeo-Italian, Judeo-French, and Judeo-Turkish from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. The studies in this book present a wide range of manuscripts and printed editions, highlighting the diverse functions and roles of Judeo-languages as vehicles for the distribution, transmission, and mediation of knowledge.

Scripture in transition : essays on Septuagint, Hebrew Bible, and Dead Sea scrolls in honour of Raija Sollamo /

: Altogether 46 essays in honour of Professor Raija Sollamo contribute to explore various aspects of the rich textual material around the turn of the era. At that time Scripture was not yet fixed; various writings and collections of writings were considered authoritative but their form was more or less in transition. The appearance of the first biblical translations are part of this transitional process. The Septuagint in particular provides us evidence and concrete examples of those textual traditions and interpretations that were in use in various communities. Furthermore, several biblical concepts, themes and writings were reinterpreted and actualised in the Dead Sea Scrolls, illuminating the transitions that took place in one faction of Judaism. The topics of the contributions are divided into five parts: Translation and Interpretation; Textual History; Hebrew and Greek Linguistics; Dead Sea Scrolls; Present-Day.

Pilgrimage and holy space in late antique Egypt /

: This volume deals with the origins and rise of Christian pilgrimage cults in late antique Egypt. Part One covers the major theoretical issues in the study of Coptic pilgrimage, such as sacred landscape and shrines' catchment areas, while Part Two examines native Egyptian and Egyptian Jewish pilgrimage practices. Part Three investigates six major shrines, from Philae's diverse non-Christian devotees to the great pilgrim center of Abu Mina and a Thecla shrine on its route. Part Four looks at such diverse pilgrims' rites as oracles, chant, and stational liturgy, while Part Five brings in Athanasius's and an anonymous hagiographer's perspectives on pilgrimage in Egypt. The volume includes illustrations of the Abu Mina site, pilgrims' ampules from the Thecla shrine, as well as several maps.

The Monks of the Nag Hammadi Codices : Contextualising a Fourth-Century Monastic Community /

: This work tells the story of a community of fourth-century monks living in Egypt. The letters they wrote and received were found within the covers of works that changed our understanding of early religious thought - the Nag Hammadi Codices. This book seeks to contextualise the letters and answer questions about monastic life. Significantly, new evidence is presented that links the letters directly to the authors and creators of the codices in which they were discovered.

Textile Messages : Inscribed Fabrics from Roman to Abbasid Egypt /

: The practice to supply textiles with inscriptions is well known in Egypt from Pharaonic times onwards. Nevertheless systematic studies on inscribed fabrics have been neglected until the middle of the 1990s when they almost simultaneously caught the interest of various scholars. This richly illustrated volume is a first compilation of what is known on the subject so far. It concentrates on textiles of the first millennium AD, a period of changing cultures, religions and languages in Egypt, mirrored by the Greek, Coptic and Arabic inscriptions on the fabrics. The emphasis lies on the historical, linguistic, sociological and artistic aspects of these textiles. Numerous fabrics from international collections are introduced. Further articles deal with the radiocarbon dating and technical aspects.
