This collection of frequently cited articles and chapters published from 1962 to 2004 provides perspective on the history and development of New Testament textual criticism, with descriptions and critique of the major text-critical theories and methods. Specific manuscripts and text-types, such as the Codex Bezae and the D-text are discussed, as well as issues such as anti-Judaic tendencies, the ascension narratives, and the relationship of text and canon. This work proposes a reconstruction of the thought world underlying the Holiness Code (Leviticus 17-26). It focuses on the notions of people and land, which are central to the way the law is presented in this corpus. Important themes treated include the sons of Israel, the resident alien, the call to holiness, the camp in the desert and the land as the property of the Lord. The conceptual universe of the Holiness Code is entirely dominated by the notion of the presence of the Lord in his sanctuary, in the midst of his people. It is this presence which requires the Israelites to observe holiness and confers upon the land its particular status. The priestly conception of the relationship between God, people and land finds interesting parallels in the ideology of holy places evidenced in writings from the Ancient Near East.

Prior studies of incubation have approached it from a history of religions perspective, with a view to historically reconstruct the actual practice of incubation in ancient Near East. However, this approach has proven unfruitful, not due to the dearth of relevant data, but because of the confusion with regard to the definition of the term incubation. Suggesting a way out of this impasse in previous scholarship, this book proposes to read the so-called "incubation" texts from the perspective of incubation as a literary device, namely, as a type-scene. It applies Nagler's definition of a type-scene to a literary analysis of two Ugaritic mythical texts, the Aqhatu and Kirta stories, and one biblical story, the Hannah story.

Text and Interpretation gives an insight into the many different approaches that more recent South African scholarship has adopted in the interpretation of the New Testament. While the number of approaches in New Testament interpretation has proliferated over the past few years, all the proposals still fall under one of the three traditional poles: sender (author) - text - receptor (reader). Classified according to this division each chapter has a twofold aim. Firstly, the perspective is situated within a wider framework of interpretation to illustrate the context out of which this approach emerges. Secondly, each article has selected a particular New Testament text to demonstrate this approach in practice. The authors of these chapters - the majority of which are South African scholars - were chosen because of their expertise in their specific fields. By presenting these studies together in one collection, the scholarship in these different areas will become more readily accessible to a wider group of scholars.
