Crossing the strait : Morocco, Gibraltar and Great Britain in the 18th and 19th centuries /
:
The Strait of Gibraltar is a ubiquitous symbol of the supposed dividing line between Europe and the Muslim world. This book re-evaluates that perception with reference to new archival evidence about the links between the Gharb region of Morocco and Gibraltar and the establishment of the Moroccan consulate there, focusing on the period around 1750-1850. It shows the development of a complex set of political, social and economic relationships across the strait that connected Morocco to Gibraltar and beyond. In the light of this evidence, the book challenges prevailing arguments that emphasise the isolationist impulses of the Moroccan sultanate and Moroccan society, and highlights the extent to which European expansion in this period was shaped by local responses.

The Cross and the Ballot : Catholic Political Parties in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands, 1785-1985 /
:
The Cross and the Ballot describes the origins, development and present status of Catholic political parties in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium and The Netherlands. Its comparative perspective contributes significantly to the current debate over Germany's Sonderweg , that is, whether or not German history has taken a "special path", or unique direction from others. The emergence of a separate political representation for German Catholics was not a deviation from the usual European spectrum but on the contrary was strikingly similar to events in the other four countries. Both the similarities and some notable differences serve to illuminate important aspects of German history.

Embodiment in Cross-Linguistic Studies : The 'Foot/Leg' /
:
Over the past two decades, linguistic research into embodiment has paid considerable attention to the human body and its individual parts, particularly within typological and cognitively oriented studies. This volume continues that line of inquiry with a specific focus on the lower limb. It shows that, like other major body parts, the lower limb serves as a highly productive source domain for a wide range of conceptualisations across the world's languages and cultures. More generally, the book contributes to the growing body of work at the intersection of cognition, language, and culture. It also engages with embodiment theory, which posits that human cognition and language are fundamentally grounded in sensory-motor experience. Contributors are: Kelsie Pattillo, Jaime Peña, Gema Silva, Franklin Espinoza, Marleny Rodríguez, Małgorzata Waśniewska, Rosanna Tramutoli, Izabela Will, Joseph Jaoko Ochieng, Annika Tjuka, Cristina Martins Fargetti, Carmen Lúcia Reis Rodrigues, Judit Baranyiné Kóczy, Iwona Kraska-Szlenk, Yi Tie, Yongxian Luo, and Mateus Cruz Maciel de Carvalho.

The Ethiopian Orthodox Church's tradition on the Holy Cross /
:
The Ethiopian Orthodox Church's Tradition on the Holy Cross is a volume that combines both ancient and derived Ethiopic literature on the Cross. The work brings together all the major sources from manuscripts preserved in different monasteries and edited and translated into English. The sources include homilies by Minas bishop of Aksum, John Chrysostom, James of Sarug, as well as a number of anonymous authors, all translated from Greek during the Aksumite era. The derived literature includes works by the famous men of the pen, including the fifteenth-century Abba Giyorgis of Sägla and Emperor Zär'a Ya'ǝqob. Poetic hymns to the Cross constitute a part of the collection, one of these being glorification of the Cross by Abba Baḥrǝy, author of several important works.

History Painting Crossing Borders, A Transnational History of Modern Art in Early Twentieth-Century China and Japan /
:
This book explores the transcultural relationship between China and Japan as it was negotiated through the practice of history painting from the 1890s to the 1940s. During this period, ancient China was reimagined to be an idealized cultural entity that accommodated divergent views on conceptualizing East Asian identities. Focusing on two pioneering artists in Japan and China, Nakamura Fusetsu (1866-1943) and Xu Beihong (1895-1953), this book highlights how historical connections across East Asia led to modern nations and artistic traditions. By comparing two artists through the lens of genre, this book has connected art practice and historiography in new ways.

Clinical trials and the African person : a quest to re-conceptualize responsibility /
:
Clinical Trials and the African Person aims to position the African notion of the self/person within the clinical trials context. As opposed to autonomy-based principlism, this other-regarding/communalist perspective is the preferred alternative model. This tactic draws further attention to the inadequacy of the principlist approach particularly in multicultural settings. It also engenders a rethink, stimulates interest, and re-assesses the failed assumptions of universal ethical principles. As a novel attempt that runs against much of the prevailing (Euro-American) intellectual mood, this approach strives to introduce the African viewpoint by making explicit the import of the self in a re-contextualized arena, meaning within the community and a given milieu. Thus, research ethics must go beyond autonomy-based considerations for the individual, to rightly embed him/her within his/her community and the environment.

Changing Discursive Trends in the Online Review Genre : A Cross-Linguistic Study of BlaBlaCar /
:
Around twenty years ago, with the digitisation of almost every facet of life, most businesses started including their own review system, so that their products could be rated and reviewed. This was the first wave of online reviews, called online consumer reviews (OCRs). The emergence of the smartphone and the proliferation of social media in the 2010s, however, resulted in a new ecosystem in which peers could share their assets, review other peers and be reviewed. This is the second wave of online reviews, or the emergence of online peer reviews (OPRs). This book explores the three differentiating discursive practices found in BlaBlaCar in Spanish and in English (emotive, relational and metacommunicative) as representative of this new wave. It demonstrates that OPRs have characteristics of their own, and proposes a new definition that captures the latest developments in online reviews in the context of peer collaboration.

Autoethnographies of Border-Crossing and In-Betweenness of International Doctoral Students' Voices in the United States /
:
This edited volume powerfully captures autoethnographies of international doctoral students in the U.S. and unravels a plethora of their experiences that oscillate between challenges and triumphs of navigating in-betweenness in their unique journeys. The concepts of border-crossing and in-betweenness encapsulate more than just a mere geographic displacement. Rather, they delineate the intricate dance of cultural, emotional, intellectual, and oftentimes, spiritual, transitions, often fraught with tension and self-reflection. As such, 12 chapters in this book will provide the readers with invaluable insights and foster a deeper empathy and understanding of the complexities faced by international students in the U.S. Contributors are: Saurabh Anand, Nadia Bhuiyan, Miriam Furlan Brighente, Heewon Chang, Suparna Chatterjee, Hanh Dinh, Sumeyra Gok, Monisha Issano Jackson, Grace Jue Yeon Kim, Nasiba Norova, Luis Javier Pentón Herrera, Lakmini Grant Siriwardana, Natalie Thibault, Ethan Trinh, Ngoc Tung Vu, Abir Ward, Zhenjie Weng, Bedrettin Yazan, Eun Young Yeom, Jing Yu and Jingyi Zhu.

Qurratulain Hyder on the Move : Crossing the Frontiers of Gender, Language, and Nation /
:
In a career spanning seven decades, Qurratulain Hyder (1927-2007) achieved distinction as a novelist, journalist, translator, and innovator in Urdu literature. To shed new light on this multilingual itinerant woman with a curatorial eye, the present study turns to Hyder's genre-bending reportage writing, which has not yet garnered the same scholarly attention as her majestic novels and short stories. At once autobiographical, admonitory, journalistic, and lyrical, these reportages offer glimpses of Hyder's multigenerational erudition, artistry, and mastery of Perso-Urdu poetic aesthetics, as well as the challenges she faced when breaking from histories freighted by patriarchal, colonial, and nationalist enterprises.
