Francis Schmidt's works in various fields of religious studies (mainly ancient Judaism), can be characterized by three words: historiography, anthropological history, and comparatism. In that respect he placed himself in the continuation of previous French scholars, such as Maurice Halbwachs or Pierre Vidal-Naquet. Francis Schmidt also played an essential role in transmitting to a new generation of scholars the complex issues and debates concerning the Dead Sea scrolls and Qumranic research. The papers offered in this volume share all the same interest in ancient religions and the methodological devices previously mentioned. They offer a rare example of a large comparatism between Assyrian, Greek, Roman, Jewish, and Christian approaches of some essential social or intellectual issues, by some of the most competent specialists in each field.

Reprenant à nouveaux frais la question de l'autorité religieuse, ce livre présente différents cas d'étude en Asie centrale, à travers l'Empire ottoman, dans les Balkans et en Turquie. Sont examinés les rapports complexes qu'entretiennent, avec le pouvoir politique, cheikhs soufis, oulémas, sheikh ul-islâm , hégoumènes, ou encore clergé latin à l'époque prémoderne. Les XXe et XXIe siècles sont analysés du point de vue des transformations de l'autorité religieuse, certes fragmentée mais vigoureuse, en particulier chez les réformistes musulmans bosniaques et les Bektashis albanais, également parmi les Alévis d'Anatolie ou bien dans le soufisme féminin à Istanbul. Il apparaît que l'autorité religieuse dépasse le seul cadre des autorités traditionnelles et se heurte sans cesse à des limites théologiques, politiques, sociales ou institutionnelles. The present volume discusses the complex relationships between political power and religious authorities, such as Sufi shaykhs, ulamas, sheikh ul-islâm , hegumens, and the latin clergy in the premodern period. The 20th and 21th centuries are analysed from the perspective of the transformation of religious authority - certainly fragmented but vigorous - among the Bosnian Muslim Reformists, the Albanian Bektashis, the Alevis of Anatolia, and in female Sufism in Istanbul. It appears that religious authority is not limited to traditional authorities and is continuously confronted with limits, whether theological, political, social or institutional.

The Hexaemeron of Anastasius of Sinai (late 7th-early 8th c.) expounds the creation account and the Adam and Eve story as foreshadowing the mystery of Christ and the Church, an idea that goes back to Origen and beyond. The commentary remained unpublished in Greek until 2007, received only scattered attention, and has been often considered as apocryphal. In this book, the first of its kind in any language, Dimitrios Zaganas firmly establishes its authenticity, investigates its genesis and date, offers detailed analysis of its numerous sources, and studies its distinctly allegorical approach to Genesis 1-3. Several emendations of the Greek text are suggested in the appendix. L' Hexaemeron d'Anastase le Sinaïte (fin VIIe-début VIIIe s.) traite du récit de la création et de l'histoire d'Adam et Ève comme préfigurant le mystère du Christ et de l'Église, une idée qui remonte à Origène et au-delà. Le commentaire est resté inédit en grec jusqu'en 2007, n'a reçu qu'une attention distraite et a été souvent considéré comme apocryphe. Dans cet ouvrage, le premier consacré à l'Hexaemeron, Dimitrios Zaganas établit fermement son authenticité, examine sa genèse et sa datation, propose une analyse détaillée de ses nombreuses sources et étudie son approche clairement allégorique de Genèse 1-3. Le quartier des prêtres dans le temple d'Amon à Karnak /

Le quartier des prêtres est un quartier résidentiel situé dans le sanctuaire d'Amon à Karnak, à l'est du lac Sacré. Au cours du premier millénaire avant notre ère, il a été presque continuellement occupé par des prêtres le temps de leur service cultuel. Un programme de recherche lancé en 2001 par le Centre franco-égyptien d'étude des temples de Karnak (Cfeetk) complète et révise les résultats de fouilles de sauvetage menées dans ce secteur dans les années 1970, jusqu'alors partiellement publiés. L'histoire et l'évolution de ce quartier, ainsi que l'identité, la culture matérielle, la vie quotidienne et le régime alimentaire de ses habitants, ont été établis au moyen d'une collaboration pluridisciplinaire pendant de nouvelles fouilles et des missions d'études du matériel. Cette recherche explore la manière dont cet habitat s'intègre dans le contexte plus large du temple, en particulier son environnement religieux et architectural direct sur la rive sud du lac Sacré qui jadis abritait de grands secteurs économiques et peut-être artisanaux. L'étude de ces annexes offre un témoignage unique et éloquent des activités quotidiennes au sein du temple d'Amon à Karnak et de la vie des serviteurs des dieux égyptiens.

The codex Parisino-petropolitanus is one of the earliest witnesses of the handwritten transmission of the Qurʾanic text which has survived to this day. The various fragments which were part of the original manuscript are scattered among various collections; once put together, they provide a unique picture of the state of the text during the 7th century (orthography and textual peculiarities) and of the circumstances in which the canonical version as we know it today took shape physically. The present study, first of its kind, paves the way for a more accurate understanding of the beginning of Islam, based on a significant document, and of the evolution of the Qurʾan during that period. Le codex Parisino-petropolitanus est l'un des plus anciens témoins de la transmission manuscrite du texte du Coran qui aient été conservés. Ses différents fragments sont dispersés entre plusieurs collections; une fois mis ensemble, ils donnent un aperçu unique sur l'état du texte au 7e siècle (orthographe et particularités textuelles) et sur les conditions dans lesquelles s'est organisée matériellement la constitution de la version canonique telle que nous la connaissons. Cette étude, première de son genre, ouvre la voie à une compréhension plus fine, appuyée sur un document significatif, des premiers temps de l'islam et de l'évolution du Coran au cours de cette période.

The fifteen papers presented here examine three centuries of close, if sometimes ambiguous, links between Christian mission and medicine. Dans son Rendre la justice à Amid , Yavuz Aykan analyse la vie juridique de la ville d'Amid, capitale de la province ottomane de Diyarbakir, au 18ème siècle. A partir des procès-verbaux des tribunaux des villes d'Amid, Harput et Mardin, il met en lumière la centralité du cadi, du gouverneur provincial (vali) et du mufti dans le champ opératoire de la loi. Retraçant la généalogie des textes utilisés par le mufti provincial, Aykan étudie aussi la circulation de diverses interprétations juridiques de la Grande Syrie à la Transoxiane et la Horde d'Or, et leur intégration dans la pratique juridique ottomane. Ce livre offre ainsi une approche renouvelée et historicisée des acteurs et hiérarchies de systèmes juridiques de ce cadre provincial. In Rendre la justice à Amid , Yavuz Aykan analyses the legal life of the city of Amid, the capital of Ottoman Diyarbekir province in the 18th century. Making use of court records from the cities of Amid, Harput and Mardin, he explores the centrality of the qadi, the provincial governor, and the provincial mufti to law enforcement. By tracing the genealogies of legal texts used by the mufti for fatwa production, Aykan maps out the broader transformations of various judicial interpretations in their journey from Greater Syria to Transoxiana and the Golden Horde, and finally into Ottoman legal praxis. As such, this book offers a far more historicized approach to the multiple actors and hierarchies of juridical systems operating in this provincial setting.

De l'histoire de leur institutionnalisation dans les écoles républicaines à leur adaptation constante que permettent leurs illustrations, ce livre éclaire le lien entre texte, image et pédagogie. Premier ouvrage à traiter ce corpus en profondeur, il questionne l'impact historique et social des Fables dans la formation des jeunes Français et Françaises.
