The patristic principle demands that theological quarrels be settled by resorting to the church fathers. This volume presents the first comprehensive reflexion on the historical evolution of the present crisis of this ancient theological principle. Focusing on the theory of the consensus quinquesaecularis , the author surveys the development of patristic authority from the 16th to the 20th centuries and relates it to other problems of the Church in modern times such as the crisis of tradition, the conflict between ecclesiastical authority and academic theology, and ecumenism. The concluding chapter tackles the question whether a renewal of the patristic principle is possible and feasible today.

Fifteen years after his death the last book by Willem Cornelis van Unnik (1910-1978) is now published. This great scholar presents here the results of his thorough investigation of self-definition in the Jewish diaspora of late antiquity. After an introductory chapter which includes a brief history of research, Van Unnik investigates the semantic field of the Greek term diaspora , the use of this word in the Septuagint and the New Testament, the history of the term in post-biblical Jewish and Christian writings, and the theological understanding of the term. Van Unnik concludes that in Jewish circles living in the diaspora has always been regarded as an essentially negative and frightening phenomenon, much more so than many modern investigations would have us believe. Bichitra Ramayana : A Voice from Wilderness /
:
The first-ever Ramayana to be written in a regional language, the Bichitra Ramayana claims a special place in the larger tradition of Ramayana writing as much for its independent retelling practice as for its indigenous, secular distinctiveness. Originally written in Odia in the mid-fifteenth century by Siddheswar Das (later known as Sarala Das), it owes its origins to the 'Uttarakanda' of Valmiki Ramayana . Its great departure and divergence from the master text shows that it has an agenda and politics of its own, demonstrated so powerfully that it makes the original invisible. Rich with folklore and legends and composed in the oral tradition, the Bichitra declares itself as a text for the layman. The voice of the common people supercedes the voice of the wise; the natural replaces the rational; the religious paradigm is substituted by a secular identity, and the mind is overtaken by the heart. The chief attraction of the Bichitra is the issue related to the position of women in a patriarchal society and the relationship between the two sexes. Siddheswar offers them freedom on a silver platter. He makes Sita the central character who is not merely a moral or socio-cultural touchstone. He fills the cowherd woman with courage to fight for her individual liberty, even if it leads to licentiousness. He allows Kausalya to rebuke Rama harshly for his misdemeanour. Written by a Shudra poet with an humble background and no formal education, the Bichitra Ramayana is a classic of Odia literature.

Protagoras beansprucht, die Jugend erziehen zu können. Warum nicht? Wenn «Mensch Maß aller Dinge» ist, kann jeder jeden 'besser' machen... Für Plato geht das nicht auf. Insofern Pädagogik Menschen dazu bringen will, 'bessere' Wesen zu werden, verlangt sie nach Plato ein gesundes Verständnis von 'Sein' überhaupt. Diese Studie untersucht die ontologischen Implikationen des Homo mensura -Satzes, Protagoras' Prämisse, im 'Theaitetos' - einem Dialog, der selten ontologisch gelesen wird. Wenn der protagoräische Prämisse den pädagogischen Anspruch nicht trägt, dürfte der 'Protagoras' gar nicht eigentlich von den erzieherischen Fragen handeln, die diskutiert werden. Es könnte sich herausstellen, dass er einen 'verborgenen' Diskurs enthält... Protagoras claims to be able to educate the young. If «Man is Measure of Everything», anybody can make everybody 'better'... To Plato, this doesn't add up. Insofar as pedagogy aims at making humans become better beings, to Plato it supposes a sound conception of 'being' per se. This study explores the ontological implications of homo mensura , Protagoras' premiss, in the 'Theaetetus' - a dialogue which is rarely read ontologically. If the Protagorean premiss doesn't support the pedagogical claim, the 'Protagoras' might not even be about the educational questions under discussion, but turn out to contain a 'hidden' discourse....

In den 'Orolegomena' wird vom Herausgeber der Durchbruch zu einer konsequenten Konzeption der interkulturellen Philosophie dargestellt. D. Tiemersma untersucht, wie Merleau-Ponty durch eine Auseinandersetzung mit kulturanthropologischen Forschungen zu einer Erweiterung des Bewußtseinsbegriffs und der Rationalitätskonzeption gelangt. Die Ansprüche einer interkulturellen Philosophie werden von J. Hoogland von einer Habermas'schen Position aus kritisch überprüft. A.W. Prins interpretiert Heideggers 'Angang der interkulturellen Auseinandersetzung' trotz anders lautenden Äußerungen dieses Autors als einen wichtigen Beitrag zur interkulturellen Philosophie. Für einen Aufweis der inneren Affinität zwischen japanischem Denken und einigen neonietzscheanischen Philosophen bezieht sich H. Oosterling auf Bataille, Barthes, Foucault, Lyotard und Derrida. Aus feministischer Perspektive wendet sich J. van den Oord der Frage der Universalität der Menschenrechte zu. In der Absicht, den Universalitätsanspruch der westlichen Demokratieform zu kritisieren, konfrontiert F. Uyanne afrikanische und westliche Demokratie-Konzeptionen. C. Jacobs beschreibt den interkulturellen Dialog, der in einigen wichtigen Kunstausstellungen in New York und Paris stattgefunden hat. Nachdem E. de Schipper tiefgehende Zweifel am hier beschrittenen Weg zur interkulturellen Philosophie ausgesprochen hat, werden zum Schluß in einer 'Replik' der Herausgebers noch einmal einige Ausgangspunkte des Projekts klargestellt.

Das Ezechielbuch als Trauma-Literatur /

The book of Ezekiel has long astonished its readership. In the history of exegesis, the book's (supposed) author has often been regarded as mad or ill, or as suffering from \'Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder\' according to a recent diagnosis. The present study radicalizes this approach by investigating the book of Ezekiel as trauma literature. On the basis of a multi-faceted trauma hermeneutics the peculiarities as well as the inconsistencies of the book are shown to be material aspects of a fictionalised trauma process in the context of Israel's experiences of siege warfare and mass deportation in the early 6th century bce. The analysis demonstrates that the potential for violence inherent in the catastrophe has created not only an intense discourse about blame and punishment but also a theologically disturbing picture of a traumatized deity; in both cases the purpose is to assure the survival of Yhwh and the people. Das Ezechielbuch hat seine Leserschaft seit jeher verwundert und verwirrt. Den vermeintlichen Autor des Buches hat man im Laufe der Auslegungsgeschichte immer wieder pathologisiert - zuletzt ist Ezechiel mehrfach die Diagnose "Posttraumatische Belastungsstörung" attestiert worden. Die vorliegende Studie nimmt diesen Krankheitsansatz auf und radikalisiert ihn, indem sie das Ezechielbuch konsequent als fiktionale Trauma-Literatur analysiert. Vor dem Hintergrund einer mehrdimensionalen Trauma-Hermeneutik erschließt sie die Ezechielprophetie neu als literarisch-theologische Auseinandersetzung mit den traumatisierenden Kriegsereignissen, die Juda und Jerusalem zu Beginn des 6. Jh.s volumeu.Z. getroffen haben. Es zeigt sich, dass die ungeheure Gewaltfülle der Exilskatastrophe nicht nur einen massiven Schuld-Strafe-Diskurs, sondern auch das theologisch erschütternde Bild einer traumatisierten Gottheit aus sich herausgesetzt hat - beides mit dem Ziel, das Überleben JHWHs und des Volkes zu sichern.
