This study tackles pertinent questions about daily life and socio-economic interactions in the late Ptolemaic town of Pathyris (186-88 BCE) through an empirically grounded network analysis of 428 Greek and Demotic documents associated with 21 archives from the site. The author moves beyond traditional boundaries of Egyptological and Papyrological research by means of an innovative and interdisciplinary methodology - zigzagging back and forth between archaeological field survey, close reading of ancient texts, formal methods of Social Network Analysis (SNA) and explanatory theories and concepts borrowed from economics and other social sciences. This is volume 2 of a two-volume set.

It reached us on the insides of some coffins and tomb walls, principally from the Hermopolitan nome in the Egyptian Middle Kingdom (2055-1650 BC). Wael Sherbiny presents a pioneering study based on all the original and hitherto unpublished sources. Through Hermopolitan Lenses challenges many of the traditional views related to this composition as part of the Coffin Texts. It also provides an integrated pictorial and textual analysis revealing many unprecedented facts. The oldest and longest leather manuscript from ancient Egypt (the Cairo leather roll), which Sherbiny rediscovered during his study and soon became world news, features here for the first time as well.

The Proselyte and the Prophet: Character Development in Targum Ruth by Christian M. M. Brady is an exegetical study of Targum Ruth with a focus upon the transformation of the biblical characters into exemplars of rabbinic piety. Ruth becomes the ideal proselyte while Boaz is presented as a judge, a scholar of the Law, and a prophet. Brady demonstrates that the Targumist follows standard Targumic practice, rendering each Hebrew word of the biblical text into Aramaic, while making additions that further his agenda of presenting Ruth as a rabbinic model to be emulated. In addition to the character analysis Brady provides a transcription of the manuscript Valmadonna 1, a new translation into English, and a verse-by-verse commentary of Targum Ruth.

Creation language in Romans 8 : a study in Monosemy /

Modern scholarship tends to understand Paul's use of creation language (κτίσις) in Rom 8.18-23 as part of a commentary on the state of sub-human creation. This misguided position warrants an inquiry into the state of lexical study in New Testament scholarship. As a result, Fewster articulates a theory of lexical monosemy, cast in the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics. The model is applied to Paul's use of κτίσις through a robust corpus analysis and investigation into the word's role within the paragraph. κτίσις contributes to the cohesive structure of Rom 8.18-23 and-contra the majority of interpreters-functions as a metaphor for the human body.

The distinction that Praxagoras of Cos (4th-3rd c. BC) made between arteries and veins and his views on pulsation and pneuma are two significant turning points in the history of ideas and medicine. In this book Orly Lewis presents the fragmentary evidence for this topic and offers a fresh analysis of Praxagoras' views on the soul and the functions of the heart and pneuma. In so doing, she highlights the empirical basis of Praxagoras' views and his engagement with earlier medical debates and with Aristotle's physiology. The study consists of an edition and translation of the relevant fragments (some absent from the standard 1958 edition) followed by a commentary and a synthetic analysis of Praxagoras' views and their place in the history of medicine and ideas.

The Temple scroll and the Bible : the methodology of 11QT /

That the Temple Scroll is re-written Torah is recognised, but discussion of how the Torah is used has been hampered by absence of detailed analysis of the Scroll. This volume addresses this lack by careful examination of major portions of the Scroll. Representative portions of each division of the Scroll are analyzed, first to establish precisely which biblical texts are used, and then to show how these texts are placed in relation to each other. From this study, a specific editorial methodology is uncovered. The final chapter summarises the conclusions and discusses implications for wider Qumran studies. This book provides data essential not only to further the discussion on the exegetical methodology of this Scroll, but also for insight into the transition from "inner-biblical" exegesis to rabbinic commentary.
