A commentary on Pseudo-Philo's Liber antiquitatum biblicarum, with Latin text and English translation /

One of the earliest and most important works of biblical interpretation is a Latin text that is commonly known as the Liber Antiquitatum Biblicarum . It was written in the first second century C.E. and is thus a great source of illumination for the period and milieu out of which arose various Jewish sects and Christianity. This book offers the Latin text of LAB, a dramatically new translation, a commentary that deals extensively with LAB's place in ancient biblical exegesis, and an introduction that treats the major problems associated with LAB (e.g. date, original language, manuscript tradition, exegetical techniques). The author seeks to illuminate LAB in new ways by reconstructing the original Hebrew when that is useful, and by bringing new and pertinent evidence from the Bible, from Rabbinic literature, and from early Christian literature.

Martial, Book IV : a commentary /

This volume is the first comprehensive commentary on the fourth book of Martial's epigrams. The introduction discusses its date of publication, major themes (Domitian, literature, death), the arrangement and form of the epigrams, and some issues concerning the transmission of the text. Of special note is the author's study of the structure of the book. The commentary, preceded by the Latin critical text and an English translation, aims to provide readers with as much pertinent information as possible to enable them to fully comprehend the epigrams. Attention is paid to style and literary tradition, as well as to realia. Both each individual epigram and the book as a whole are studied as finely accomplished works of art.

Martial, Book VII : a commentary /

This volume is the first comprehensive commentary on the seventh book of Martial's epigrams. The introduction discusses the date of publication of Martial's books, the themes of the epigrams of book seven as well as the transmission of the text. The autor pays special attention to the adulation of Domitian in book seven, the satirization of lawyers, legacy-hunters, parasites and dinner-guests, and hetero- and homosexuality. The commentary, preceded by a revised edition of Shackleton Bailey's Teubner edition (1990), focuses on literary, linguistic and metrical matters. Thematic relationships with other books of Martial and other Greek and Latin literature are highlighted. Attention is also paid to the use of recurrent motifs, obscene language, puns, double meanings and proper names.

This volume forms part of the international Theophrastus project started by Brill in 1992 and edited by W.W. Fortenbaugh, P.M. Huby, R.W. Sharples and D. Gutas. Along with volumes containing texts and translations, the commentary volumes provide classicists and philosophers with an up-to-date collection of the material relating to Theophrastus (ca. 370-286 BC), Aristotle's pupil and successor as head of the Peripatetic school. This is the second volume of Huby's commentary on Theophrastus of Eresus. Sources for His Life, Writings, Thought and Influence . Dimitri Gutas has written on the Arabic passages, including some unique material, and Pamela Huby has covered the rest. Theophrastus largely followed Aristotle's logical views, but made important changes in modal logic, and dealt with hypothetical and prosleptic syllogisms. He also influenced medieval logic.

Hilary of Poitiers' preface to his Opus historicum : translation and commentary /

What precisely does Hilary's so-called Opus Historicum aim at? His Preface provides the clue. An introduction to the present edition sketches the mutilated work's discovery, tabulates its contents, and discusses problems of dating and authenticity. The English translation, which faces the Latin text, adopts some alternative readings. The Preface is elucidated in itself, and by reference to the earlier In Matthaeum . Central issues are hope and love, confessors and martyrs, imperial favours and threats, the bishop and his inner freedom. The circumspect treatment of both the reader and the subject reveals 'conscientization' of the bishops as the aim of the Opus Historicum . One of the book's excurses deals with the edict of Arles and Milan, and concludes that the nameless creed quoted by Hilary might preserve the lost edict's doctrinal preliminaries.

It includes fifty-six editions and re-editions of (Abnormal) Hieratic, Demotic, Greek, Latin and Coptic texts, most of them from Ancient Egypt. The texts are as diverse as the jubilee's own range of interests and her extensive papyrological network, including both literary and documentary texts, written on papyri and potsherds, dating from the twelfth century BCE to the eighth century CE. All texts are published with transcriptions, translations, commentary and photographs.

It includes contributions by Dimitri Gutas on the Arabic passages, and Pamela Huby has covered the rest, including close study of the quotations given by Priscian of Lydia and the extensive but little known medieval Latin passages. Different approaches to the use of medieval material as evidence for Theophrastus' thought are discussed in the Introduction.

The importance of Boethius' treatise is twofold: it was widely read in the medieval schools, and it preserves the only known vestiges of Porphyry's commentary on Plato's Sophist and of Andronicus' treatise on diaeresis. The book is in four main sections: prolegomena in three parts, dealing with the date, source(s), and text of De divisione ; critical text with apparatus and English translation; detailed philological and philosophical commentary; appendix, bibliography, and word index. This is the first edition of De divisione based on the earliest extant manuscripts, and the first complete commentary in any modern language. This volume is an in-depth study of the short poetic cycle of Lygdamus, one of the authors included in Book III of the Corpus Tibullianum . The Introduction analyzes the controversial quaestio Lygdamea (identity and dating of the poet), the relationship between Lygdamus and his beloved, Neaera, the incorporation of his poems into the Corpus Tibullianum , and the manuscript tradition. This is followed by a rigorous critical edition (taking fully into account the earliest editions and conjectures). Finally, there is a detailed and exhaustive line-by-line and word-by-word commentary on each poem, paying particular attention to elegiac terms and motifs. The bibliography of Aristotle's Poetics by Cooper and Gudeman, most welcome in 1928, has now become antiquated, even for the period it covers. The present one registers all editions, translations, commentaries and studies bearing on the Poetics or the major concepts that have been associated with it, correctly or incorrectly, from 1481 up till 1996. Moreover, a survey is given of the medieval translations and commentaries written in the Orient and in Europe. Special attention has been given to the reviews. The oldest one registered dates from 1697. The second book of the Poetics being lost, publications related to the Tractatus Coislinianus , which partly rests on Poetics II , have been included. There are seven indices. Especially those on passages and subjects should prove to be useful instruments. In the author's text Greek nouns and adjectives have been transliterated.

L'apologie de Jérôme contre Rufin : un commentaire /

In the three books of his Contra Rufinum , a work dating back to his mature period (401-402), Jerome (ca 347-420) fought against his erstwhile friend turned rival, Rufinus: the two Latin monks, one settled in Bethlehem, the other in Jerusalem, had come to confront each other on such issues as the timeliness and ways (translation, commentary...) of transmitting an Oriental heritage to the West, Greek (in particular the works of Origen [ca. 185-ca. 253], whose Peri Archôn they both translated in competition) as well as Jewish (the biblical hebraica veritas which Jerome championed). They were also at variance on the appreciation of profane culture (the Latin classics). Jerome's Contra Rufinum is a masterpiece by a brilliant polemist and an important document as to a knowledge of the actors and the vicissitudes of a controversy which mobilised many Christians, Eastern and Western alike, on the eve of the sacking of Rome by the Barbarians. This commentary seeks to analyse the treatise in all its facets (historical and theological, philological and rhetorical), and to elucidate its connections with the different traditions (classical, biblical, patristic) to which it belongs. The Contra Rufinum thus turns out to be a remarkable vantage point from which to illuminate the entire corpus of an author whose work, spread over nearly half a century, was immensely influential during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
