Laubhütte Davids und Wolkensohn deals with the history of interpretation of Amos 9:11 - a passage which is regarded in both, Jewish and Christian tradition, as a messianic prediction. The book examines its interpretation and impact in Qumran and Rabbinic Judaism as well as in the New Testament, the Church Fathers, the Middle Ages, the Reformation and in the scientific discussion up to the present. Special emphasis is laid on (a) its usage at the Apostolic Council of Jerusalem (Acts 15) and its influence on the formation of the Christian Church and (b) hitherto overlooked explicit and important interpretations of scholars such as Nicholas de Lyre, Luther, Mercerus, Miegius and Harenberg who have already made use of the rabbinic messianic interpretation of this passage. Besides, a new interpretation of Amos 9:11-15 in its historical Old Testament context is offered.

David in the fourth gospel : the Johannine reception of the Psalms /

This volume deals with the reception of the psalms in the New Testament, taking as an example the Fourth Gospel, a work profoundly shaped by early Christian liturgy. It explores the contemporary Jewish attribution of the Psalms to David, an idealized figure envisaged as Temple founder and man of prayer. It then shows how this image of David has affected the way the Fourth Evangelist draws on the psalms through quotation, allusion and echo. It frequently demonstrates that the Fourth Gospel attests to Jewish psalm interpretations found in rabbinic sources. Challenging the prevailing view that the Fourth Evangelist intentionally dissociates Jesus from David, this book argues that David as psalmist plays a highly significant role in the Johannine portrayal of Jesus.

David, a member of the Platonic school in Alexandria in the sixth century, is credited with several commentaries on Aristotle's logic: those commentaries, and their Armenian translations, form the subject of this book. An introduction, which discusses David and his place in the Greek and the Armenian traditions, is followed by a series of studies of the relations between the Greek texts and their Armenian translations: the aims are, first, to assess the value of the translations for the constitution of the original Greek, and secondly, to consider the ways in which the Armenian translations adapted the texts to suit their new readership. More generally, the book is concerned with the ways in which Greek thought was exported abroad-to Armenia and to Syria: it is required reading for anyone who is interested in the circulation of ideas between east and west. On Weather Signs , traditionally ascribed to Theophrastus, contains the most complete list of such signs in antiquity and it was, in this or some very similar form, consulted by Aratus, Vergil (in Georgics I), and Pliny the Elder, as well as by many other authors throughout the Byzantine period. This edition is the first to take account of all the manuscripts and the commentary, the first in over a century, is on a far grander scale than earlier ones by Schneider (1818-21) and Wood (1894), listing almost all parallel texts for each sign. The introduction places the work in the context of its genre and for the first time lays out the details of its manuscript tradition.

Les termes « messie » et « messianisme » recouvrent aujourd'hui une désignation exagérément large au regard de leur sens initial dans le judaïsme et le christianisme. Ils sont utilisés dans des contextes qui empruntent souvent inconsciemment aux modèles rhétoriques à l'oeuvre dans le judaïsme ancien et dans le christianisme primitif. Le livre s'intéresse à ces modèles qui caractérisent l'histoire intellectuelle du premier messianisme juif. Tout d'abord, l'émergence du messianisme est examinée à travers les modèles de divinisation du roi dans le Proche-Orient ancien (Égypte, Mésopotamie, culture cananéenne), et à travers l'évolution de l'idéologie royale dans l'Israël ancien. D'autre part, les premiers textes chrétiens ont mis en avant la fusion des attentes messianiques en une seule figure de messie (Jésus-Christ), mais la pluralité des figures messianiques semble prévaloir dans la littérature juive ancienne. ____________________________________ The words 'messiah' and 'messianism' are presently used in a too wide significance in comparison with their original meaning in Judaism and Christianity. Nevertheless, they often borrow unconsciously from rhetorical models at work in Ancient Judaism and Christianity. The book constitutes a series of studies on these models which characterize the intellectual history of the first Jewish messianism. Firstly, the birth of messianism is studied across the divinization of kings in Ancient Near East (Egypt, Mesopotamia, Canaanite culture) and secondly, the change of royal ideology in Ancient Israel to messianism. Thirdly, the first Christian texts have promoted the merging of messianic expectations in one messianic figure (Jesus-Christ), but the plurality of messiahs seem to prevail in early Jewish literature.

This study deals with the representation of Christ's Healing Miracles in early Christian sepulchral art from Provence and Northern Italy. It sees the imagery through the contemporary exegetical writings and tries thus to uncover new strata of symbolic significance in early Christian art. The aim of the work is to reveal the complex theological concepts reflected in the relief decoration of a small number of late fourth-century sarcophagi and to cast thus light upon the spiritual climate of the sphere the persons who commissioned them were part of. It also links the narrative structure of representations of medical treatment and miracle scenes in ancient art with the Christian images and establishes new formal and iconographic connexions.

Augustinus und der Pelagianismus stehen für zwei konträre Positionen christlicher Theologie. Der Pelagianismus ist dabei eine häresiologische Konstruktion von Augustinus, die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Pelagianismus prägte wiederum Augustinus' Gnadenlehre nachhaltig. Die vorliegende Monographie stellt ausgehend von der Analyse der Schrift "̌Contra duas epistulas Pelagianorum" dar, wie Augustinus zwischen 411 und 421 den Pelagianismus als Häresie definierte und zugleich seine Gnadenlehre weiterentwickelte. Als Grundlage verwendete Augustinus dabei das soteriologische Konzept von Heilsstadien. Mit diesem gelang es ihm, verschiedene Themenfelder wie Gnaden- und Sündenlehre, Paulusexegese und Christologie zu verknüpfen und antipelagianisch zu profilieren. Damit findet sich in den antipelagianischen Schriften eine Synthese von Augustinus' später Theologie, wodurch sich viele Querbeziehungen zwischen Augustinus' Antipelagianismus und Auseinandersetzungen mit anderen Häresien aufzeigen lassen.

The Fatimids (10th - 12th centuries C.E) are known to have been the first Shiite caliphal dynasty and to have founded Cairo, the city that became their capital in 973 when they left Tunisia for Egypt. During their reign, the Fatimids built an effective war fleet that inflicted several defeats on Christian navies. This is the first study on the Fatimid naval force and, more generally, on the role of the sea for the Fatimids whose territories touched both the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. The documentation presented in this study demonstrates how, in the course of two centuries, this Ismaeli dynasty set up a maritime policy and developed a communication strategy in which their control of the sea helped legitimize their universalist claims against competing powers. Les Fatimides (10e -12e s. ap. J.-C) sont connus pour avoir été la première dynastie califale chiite et pour avoir fondé Le Caire qui devint leur capitale à partir de 973 lorsque la dynastie quitta la Tunisie actuelle pour s'installer en Egypte et prendre possession d'un empire qui s'étendait de l'Algérie orientale jusqu'à la Syrie en passant par la Sicile et certains territoires de la péninsule arabique. Durant leur règne, ils disposèrent d'une flotte de guerre efficace qui infligea plusieurs défaites aux marines chrétiennes. Au-delà de la chronologie des batailles navales, aucune étude n'existait sur le rôle de cette force navale et plus généralement sur le rôle de la mer pour les Fatimides dont les territoires touchaient à la fois la Méditerranée et la mer Rouge. La documentation met pourtant en évidence que sur durant plus de deux siècles, les Fatimides mirent en place une politique maritime qui dépassait largement les considérations militaires. Ils développèrent ainsi une stratégie de communication dans laquelle la mer jouait un rôle majeur pour à la fois légitimer les prétentions universalistes de cette dynastie ismaélienne face à des pouvoirs concurrents et pour lui permettre de survivre.

The centrepiece of this book is a critical edition of the Targum of Job which notes all variants from a total of 14 manuscripts and 2 printed editions. In the introductory section the first two chapters give a description of the principal printed editions and the manuscripts. A chapter on \'The Stemma\' considers how the various strands of textual tradition relate to each other. There is also a chapter on \'Multiple Translation\', a phenomenon particularly associated with the Targum of Job whereby more than one translation is often given to whole verses or to individual words and phrases. A final chapter describes in detail the methods underlying the critical edition. This book will provide a useful tool for those working on the textual criticism of the Old Testament and for those interested in the history of Jewish biblical exegesis.
