The sequential imperative : general cognitive principles and the structure of behaviour /

: In The Sequential Imperative William Edmondson explains how deep study of linguistics - from phonetics to pragmatics - can be the basis for understanding the organization of behaviour in any organism with a brain. The work demonstrates that Cognitive Science needs to be anchored in a linguistic setting. Only then can Cognitive Scientists reach out to reconsider the nature of consciousness and to appreciate the functionality of all brains. The core functionality of the brain - any brain, any species, any time - is delivery and management of the unavoidable bi-directional transformation between brain states and activity - the Sequential Imperative. Making it all work requires some general cognitive principles and close attention to detail. The book sets out the case in broad terms but also incorporates significant detail where necessary.

How to make our signs clear : C.S. Peirce and semiotics /

: How to Make Our Signs Clear is the result of an international cooperation between European and Brazilian Peircean scholars (I. A. Ibri, E. Višňovský, C. Paolucci and others) and strives to dispel simplifications of Peirce´s semiotic as well as to collect various insights into it and into its consequences for philosophy, especially philosophy of language, pragmatism and epistemology. The central theme of this book is the notion of the sign as a specific triadic relational unit, treated from various perspectives and applied to various fields of philosophy: semeiotic knowledge grows up from the discussions, common interests and possible conflicts between the readers of Peirce´s works. This book does not offer a general overview of Peirce´s theory of signs, but rather various analyses of consequences of some capacities of his semiotic.

Causing his name to live : studies in Egyptian epigraphy and history in memory of William J. Murnane /

: William J. Murnane (1945-2000) dedicated his life to the epigraphic recording and historical interpretation of the monuments of pharaonic Egypt. In tribute to his important contributions to Egyptology, a prominent group of his colleagues and students offer a range of new studies on Egyptian epigraphy and historiography. Amarna studies loom large in the volume as they did in Murnane's own work. Several chapters investigate the art, history and chronology of the reigns of Akhenaten and his immediate successors. Other contributions deal with historical issues, especially those connected with the epigraphic and archaeological aspects of the Theban temples of Karnak and Luxor. The book is richly illustrated with photographs and drawings.

Africa Unbound: Decolonial Pathways to Sovereignty and Liberation /

: This book redefines the debate on Africa's future by confronting the hidden continuities of colonial power that persist in economics, education, and governance. By revealing how structural dependency and epistemic subjugation still constrain the continent's autonomy, this book advocates for a radical reorientation toward self-determination grounded in African values, knowledge systems, and collective agency. The author engages both historical depth and contemporary urgency, offering a visionary blueprint for rebuilding Africa through decolonial thought, ethical leadership, and continental solidarity. Scholarly, provocative, and transformative, the book positions Africa not as a subject of history, but as its author.

Rethinking Media and Communication : A Critical Sociological Lens /

: In this book, the authors address critical questions about the role of media and communication in capitalist societies. How do power structures shape communication processes? How are inequalities reinforced across different levels of society-micro, mezzo, and macro? Drawing on sociology, political economy, media studies and related fields, the book offers fresh insights into how communication supports capitalist domination, from media commodification to media concentration. It calls for a rethinking of how communication affects social relations and how social relations influence communication, exposing its deep connection to economic and political power. This book is essential for anyone seeking to understand the forces shaping today's media landscape.

Encountering cruelty the fracture of the human heart /

: Interest in recent years in reconciliation and conflict transformation has witnessed a great deal of attention to building a future through forgiveness and preventative measures in order to impede egregious wrongdoing. This effort for a reconciled future is absent reflection on the nature of cruelty. Cruelty has always been apparent in massive acts of wrongdoing and yet is repeatedly concealed in our assessment of the acts themselves. This book is a theologically honest and deep-structure exploration of cruelty in its personal, communal and institutional encounters in human life. Drawing on Nietzsche's challenge of cruelty to the western tradition, the work offers a comprehensive study of how cruelty undermines care, trust, respect and justice - all those elements of human reciprocity that mark our lives as interdependent beings. The work concludes with a tightly written Epilogue on interpreting the theological meaning and accessibility of reconciliation today.

Virtue, Piety and the Law : A Study of Birgivī Meḥmed Efendī's al-Ṭarīqa al-muḥammadiyya /

: In Virtue, Piety and the Law Katharina Ivanyi examines Birgivī Meḥmed Efendī's (d. 981/1573) al-Ṭarīqa al-muḥammadiyya , a major work of pietist exhortation and advice, composed by the sixteenth-century Ottoman jurist, Ḥadīth scholar and grammarian, who would articulate a style of religiosity that had considerable reformist appeal into modern times. Linking the cultivation of individual virtue to questions of wider political, social and economic concern, Birgivī played a significant role in the negotiation and articulation of early modern Ottoman Ḥanafī piety. Birgivī's deep mistrust of the passions of the human soul led him to prescribe a regime of self-surveillance and control that was only matched in rigor by his likewise exacting interpretation of the law in matters of everyday life, as much as in state practices, such as the cash waqf, Ottoman land tenure and taxation.

Plato and Jesus, Not Caesar : Metaphysics of Freedom and Tyranny in Younger Europe /

: This book discusses the influence of ancient and medieval Platonism and Christian Platonism on the modern political concepts and experiences of freedom and tyranny in Central-Eastern Europe. The main claim of the book is that because the nations of Younger Europe were oppressed by the imperialism of Russia, Germany, and Austria, they maintained a stronger connection to the premodern, Christian Platonic tradition. This tradition was experienced as a source of inspiration in the struggle for freedom and independence. The book focuses on the life and work of selected philosophers, poets, and artists, all of whom were both mystics and figures deeply engaged in their nations' fight for freedom.

How Heaven Works : The Collective Shamanic Journeys of Phạm Công Tắc and the Syncretic Afterworld of Caodaism /

: In 1948, Vietnam's great 20th Century mystic Phạm Công Tắc (1890-1959) began a series of sermons making Caodaism's claims to universal salvation the clearest. In only two decades, Caodaism had stamped its fast-growing presence on the nation. With potent creative and poetic skill Phạm Công Tắc invited his co-religionists to take a shamanic journey with him to examine the heavens and literally see how they would be saved. The 35 sermons translated here are provided with a commentary and extensive introduction by Hartney. How Heaven Works is a fascinating insight into the deep connection between shamanic atmosphere, literature, and Modern syncretic concepts of salvation. See Less

Metaphors in Proverbs : Decoding the Language of Metaphor in the Book of Proverbs /

: Proverbs is a poetic book full of images and metaphors, many of which are often obscure and enigmatic. In this volume, Rotasperti offers a contribution to the understanding of figurative language in Proverbs by looking at the grammatical and social contexts in which many of the book's metaphors appear. The brief introduction explains the process and methodological assumptions used for identifying metaphors. The study then continues with a lexical review of four semantic categories: the body, urban fabric, nature and animals. The result of this survey is a deep analysis of several key metaphors that looks at their composition, structure, and interpretation.

Breaking Boundaries in Theology : In Conversation with Roger Haight SJ /

: American Jesuit Roger Haight (born 1936) undoubtedly belongs to the circle of Catholic theologians who have set standards across denominational boundaries, particularly in the English-speaking world. Haight's writings have attracted both attention and criticism. The anthology will be the first comprehensive and international examination of central aspects of Haight's theology. A detailed introduction, which primarily aims to situate Haight's theology in his social and cultural context, is followed by three sections that present central aspects of his theology and conversationally develop them. The first section, Finding God within the World, has the clearest fundamental theological contours, echoing Ignatian themes. The following sections focus on Spirituality and on Haight's Christology in connection with his liberation theological concerns. The book includes also an online conversation with Roger Haight. "Like the music of Mozart and Beethoven which he loved, Roger Haight's theology flowed in creative ways while building upon a deep structure. Never without his playlists, earbuds, or tickets to the NY Philharmonic, he radiated curiosity and a centered peace." - Elizabeth Johnson, Distinguished Professor Emerita of Theology, Fordham University, New York City "Roger Haight's theology was simply a reflection of who he was: such a keen mind, so good-humored, ready always to advise 'onward and upward,' and yes, above all, kind." - Leo J. O'Donovan, SJ, President Emeritus, Georgetown University, Washington D.C. "As a teacher, theologian, priest, mentor, and friend, Roger Haight was without peer. His openness, generosity, and incisive clarity - paired with a ready and wry sense of humor - were wellsprings of inspiration and joy for those who studied and worked with him. This book is a wonderful testament to the theology of conversation of Roger Haight." - Lisa Holsberg, Adjunct Professor, Fordham University, New York City

Interart Poetics : Essays on the Interrelations of the Arts and Media /

: In this anthology are gathered 28 essays, devoted to the interrelations of the arts and media. They present together the current state of the emerging field of Interart Studies. The contributors - Stephen Greenblatt, Claus Clüver, Erika Fischer-Lichte, John Neubauer, Steven Paul Scher, Walter Bernhart, Ulrich Weisstein, Eric T. Haskell, Eric Vos, Thomas Elsaesser, among others - are leading international scholars in the fields of Art History, Literary Criticism, Musicology, Film, Theatre and Media Studies. In challenging ways they promote interdisciplinary strategies in the study of the traditional arts: dance, literature, music, painting, sculpture, theatre etc, as well as of the modern media: film, TV, video, computer-generated arts, etc. The essays collected engage in a broad perspective of topics, approached from varying theoretical, methodological or ideological viewpoints. No single thread runs through the diversely conceived essays, yet it is evident that what all contributors appear to envision is the importance today of investigations into the problems of what might be called the interart - or intermedia - discourse. Aimed at university teachers, scholars, students and even artists, this book will meet the demands from those interested in modern modes of interart and intermedia analysis.

Das Konzil von Chalcedon und die Kirche : Konflikte und normierungsprozesse im 5. und 6. Jahrhundert /

: In Das Konzil von Chalcedon und die Kirche Sandra Leuenberger-Wenger offers a new perspective on the council of Chalcedon, analyzing the rich material of its acts. Leuenberger-Wenger shows the entanglement of the Christological debate with other fields of conflict concerning the status and authority of different episcopal sees and of monasticism in the church. The study emphasizes the importance of the traditionally neglected second part of the council with its canons and resolutions and argues that these regulations had a deep impact on the structures of the church as well as on the reception of the council and its definition of faith. The evaluation of a wide range of sources places the refusal of the definition of faith in the broader context of the transformation processes of the Roman Empire in Late Antiquity and the rejection of an increasingly institutionalized Byzantine Church.
