Money in the late Roman Republic /

: Roman monetary history has tended to focus on the study of Roman coinage but other assets regularly functioned as, or in place of, money. This book places coinage in its broader monetary context by also examining the role of bullion, financial instruments, and commodities such as grain and wine in making payments, facilitating exchange, measuring value and storing wealth. The use of such assets reduced the demand for coinage in some sectors of the economy and is a crucial factor in determining the impact of the large increase in the coin supply during the last century of the Republic. Money demand theory suggests that increased coin production led to further monetization, not per capita economic growth.

The Concept of Marriages of Convenience in EU Free Movement Law : EU and UK Perspectives /

: Over the past two decades, EU Member States have regularly complained about the perceived abuse of EU law via marriages of convenience, allegedly contracted between mobile EU citizens and third-country nationals. During the pre-Brexit years, the UK had been voicing particularly strong concerns about the issue, which ultimately resulted in regulatory changes both at the EU and national level. In this book, Aleksandra Ancite-Jepifánova pursues two interrelated aims. First, she evaluates the compatibility of EU-level measures addressing marriages of convenience with EU free movement law by focusing on the Citizenship Directive. Second, she examines the regulation of the issue in UK law in so far as it concerns the residence rights of EU citizens and their family members, both pre-and post-Brexit. See Less

Gregory of Nyssa: Homilies on the Our Father. An English Translation with Commentary and Supporting Studies : Proceedings of the 14th International Colloquium on Gregory of Nyssa (...

: Gregory of Nyssa's Homilies on the Our Father are the second explanation of this central prayer of Christian worship in Greek Antiquity. Composed at the end of the 4th century, these five homilies offer a spiritual and pastoral commentary of the Pater Noster. The present volume, edited by Matthieu Cassin (Paris), Hélène Grelier-Deneux (Paris) and Françoise Vinel (Strasbourg), offers introductory materials, a new English translation, the first edition of the 15th century Latin translation by Athanasios Chalkeopoulos, together with five studies that form a commentary for the different homilies, and nineteen shorter contributions on various aspects of the text. The contributors envisage the text according to exegesis and theology, but also to philosophy, rhetoric and history of Christian communities.

Pottery production, landscape and economy of Roman Dalmatia : interdisciplinary approaches /

: This volume offers results of work undertaken as part of the RED project - Roman Economy in Dalmatia: production, distribution and demand in the light of pottery workshops. It presents research carried out on the Roman sites of pottery workshops active within the coastal area of the province of Dalmatia as well as on material recovered during the excavations. The presentation revolves around three thematic units: workshops and their products together with their role in the local provincial economy, location of workshops within the landscape, and archaeometric research which connects the two. These approaches contribute to the study of ceramic production in the area whereas new methodological approaches to the subject allow for the placement of pottery workshops in the broader context of Roman economy and landscape and natural resources of the eastern Adriatic.

Politics in the Roman Republic: Perspectives from Niebuhr to Gelzer /

: B. G. Niebuhr, the founder of 'modern history', exerts an enduring influence; even in death, Goethe once claimed, '[Niebuhr] still walks around and works'. Today, Niebuhr is a humbler phantom, rarely invoked and largely forgotten. Similar fates await the shades of Theodor Mommsen, Friedrich Münzer, and Matthias Gelzer. Yet, each demands reconsideration and revitalization. Their texts remain foundational, constituting the conceptual and methodological core of Republican political studies. Politics in the Roman Republic (re)presents the first critical, comprehensive, Anglophone survey of these scholars' influence. Its innovative reassessments dispel deep-seated misconceptions and emphasize relevance. The work's unique (re)interpretations render it essential reading for any student of Rome: specialist and non-specialist alike.

Groaning tears : ethical and dramatic aspects of suicide in Greek tragedy /

: Groaning Tears examines suicide in Greek tragedy in light of the fifth-century ethical climate. No full-scale work has previously been devoted to this pervasive topic. The particular focus of identifying suicide as a response to the expectations of popular ethics and social demands makes it useful for scholars and students of drama, ethics and sociology. Chapter one establishes the ethical background of audiences in the fifth century while chapters two through five examine suicide in the context of whole plays based on motivational distinctions: to avoid disgrace and preserve an honorable reputation; to avoid further suffering; to end grief; and to sacrifice oneself for a greater good. The final chapter considers a drama of lighter tone that presents suicide in all of its ethical and theatrical aspects.

Plato as Author : The Rhetoric of Philosophy /

: This collection, focusing on literary aspects of the Platonic dialogues, includes stimulating and diverse essays by scholars from several different fields. Plato, the critic, satirist, and (perhaps) inventor of "rhetoric" framed his own discourse in complex ways. Republic is a mimetic text that presents a sophisticated analysis of the various types of mimesis; Phaedrus , featuring embedded exemplars of exquisite prose style, includes a severe critique of literary authorship. Texts such as these seem to demand the fullest resources of a sophisticated analysis of discourse. Essay topics include friendship and desire in the Lysis, Socratic irony in Cratylus, mystery imagery in Phaedrus, and the peculiar couch in Book 10 of Republic. Contributors include Michael Erler, David Gallop, Francisco Gonzalez, Charles Kahn, Andrea Nightingale, and Thomas Szlezák.

Interart Poetics : Essays on the Interrelations of the Arts and Media /

: In this anthology are gathered 28 essays, devoted to the interrelations of the arts and media. They present together the current state of the emerging field of Interart Studies. The contributors - Stephen Greenblatt, Claus Clüver, Erika Fischer-Lichte, John Neubauer, Steven Paul Scher, Walter Bernhart, Ulrich Weisstein, Eric T. Haskell, Eric Vos, Thomas Elsaesser, among others - are leading international scholars in the fields of Art History, Literary Criticism, Musicology, Film, Theatre and Media Studies. In challenging ways they promote interdisciplinary strategies in the study of the traditional arts: dance, literature, music, painting, sculpture, theatre etc, as well as of the modern media: film, TV, video, computer-generated arts, etc. The essays collected engage in a broad perspective of topics, approached from varying theoretical, methodological or ideological viewpoints. No single thread runs through the diversely conceived essays, yet it is evident that what all contributors appear to envision is the importance today of investigations into the problems of what might be called the interart - or intermedia - discourse. Aimed at university teachers, scholars, students and even artists, this book will meet the demands from those interested in modern modes of interart and intermedia analysis.

Northern India in the Late Nineteenth Century: Quality of Life : Volume I, Part I A to C: 1860s-1870s (Document on Economic History of British Rule in India) /

: This volume is part of the collaborative Project of the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) and Institute of Development Studies Kolkata (IDSK) on the documents pertaining to economic history and quality of life in Northern India in the late nineteenth century. The present volume (divided into three parts A, B, and C) roughly covers the broad period of the 1860s and 1870s. It dwells on documents collected from a wide spectrum of human activity in northern India. They included materials from diverse fields such as agriculture, forestry, population, public health, education, sanitation, and different aspects of the quality of life, in each of which the British Raj was collecting information and directing courses of development in more than one sense. By northern India is meant here what was generally known as the North-Western Provinces (NWP) and the province of Oudh (till 1877, after which it was merged with the NWP) in the late nineteenth century excluding the Punjab. Of the many documents included in the volume, five major issues may be identified: (a) various issues relating to a high land revenue demand and its economic impact (b) education and a few other social issues (c) public health and mortality (d) environmental issues and (e) questions connected with quality of life. Touching on a number of crucial aspects of material conditions and quality of life of people in northern India in the late nineteenth century, the volume stands as a valuable source book for the students of economic history and human development in general.

Apophasis and Envisioning the Invisible : Unveiling Veils of Infinity /

: In this monograph, two of the most complicated theoretical topics confronting the scholar of mysticism (apophasis and infinity) are tackled. Writing about apophasis presents a unique dilemma as the term itself connotes the inability of language to name the namelessness of ultimate reality. Yet, the apophatic is a gesture of speaking-not, which entails saying the unsayable, as opposed to not speaking, which is the reticence appropriate to silence. The exploration of infinity presents an equally daunting demand as the intellect embarking on this path is summoned to circumscribe the uncircumscribable. Just as communicating the incommunicable is an endless enterprise of speaking the unspeakable, so mapping infinity is an unremitting pursuit of delimiting the limitless. The two subjects thus intersect at the vanishing point where the human mind reaches its limit by confronting the limitlessness that can be described only as indescribable.

La Carrière de Molière : Entre protecteurs et éditeurs /

: A new interpretation of Molière's work, drawn from contemporary archival sources, showing for the first time how he shaped an independent career between the opposing pressures of aristocratic patrons and mercantile publishers. Exploiting the alternate roles of actor and courtier, he progressed from social success to artistic achievement but, to the dissatisfaction of his royal patrons, Molière put the priorities of his own authorial status before the notion of service at Court; important new bibliographical material illustrates his long war in defence of his authorial rights against a cartel of unscrupulous publishers. The six chapters of this absorbing study challenge the current orthodoxy of a programmatic ideology in Molière's work. Raising basic questions about the writer's perception of her/himself, and about the French cult of classicism, this work will interest all specialists of seventeenth-century French theatre and social history. Southern India in the Late Nineteenth Century : Volume l, Part ll-A and B: 1880s-1890s (Documents on Economic History of British Rule in India 1858-1947) /

: This volume is part of the Project of Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) on documents pertaining to the economic history of British rule in India from 1858 to 1947. The present volume (divided into two parts A and B) on Southern India in the late nineteenth century roughly covers the broad economic history of Southern India during the 1880s and 1890s. It dwells on documents collected from a wide spectrum of human activity in Southern India. They included materials from diverse fields such as agriculture, forestry, population, public health, education and sanitation, in each of which the British Raj was involved in collecting information and directing the courses of development in more than one sense. A large part of Southern India was under raiyatwari settlement and an enormous number of documents were available touching on agricultural operations, agricultural appliances, material conditions of agricultural classes, population change, health and mortality, literacy and primary education, values of livestock and cattle diseases, production and export of cash crops, production and supply of food grains, distribution of waste lands, forests and reclamation of jungle lands, and scarcity and famines. These twenty years in the Madras Presidency immediately followed three developments earlier in the century. First, this is the period of the last stage of survey and settlement for what has been called the new ryotwari system. Second, the region experienced different measures of the government for the 'improvement' of the conditions of the people for which Raghavaiyanger spoke so eloquently. Finally, this was also a period of social conflict between the depressed classes like the Paraiyans and landowners of various categories. This volume touches on these crucial developments, and is thus expected to be a valuable source for students of the history of economic and human development of India.
