In Modern Individuality in Hegel's Practical Philosophy , Erzsébet Rózsa aims to reconstruct Hegel's theory of individuality in the light of his idea of modernity. Modern individuality is one of the central topics of Hegel's practical philosophy, discussed systematically in the forms of subjectivity in subjective, objective, and practical spirit. Hegel interpreted modern existence and lifeworld in the context of law, politics, economy, and private life. "Infinite subjective freedom" is the historical principle of the "modern age", as well as the basic determination of modern individual forms of existence and knowledge. Modern form of life and mentality based on the values and practical actions of self-knowledge and self-determination is an achievement of historical significance. This radical turn, however, gives a new perspective to the problem of good life: the normative role of substantial values is overshadowed by the stabilizing function of the "objective order" of institutions.

Anhand des Konzepts der zweiten Natur bietet dieses Buch eine hegelsche Version des dialektischen Naturalismus, indem es die Zweideutigkeit der zweiten Natur in einem wesentlichen Zusammenhang mit der Frage nach der Verwirklichung der Freiheit oder der Freiheit als Verwirklichung analysiert. Es wird gezeigt, dass Freiheit sich ausschließlich in Form der zweiten Natur verwirklichen lässt. Gerade diese Notwendigkeit der zweiten Natur bei der Verwirklichung der Freiheit macht diese jedoch zugleich prekär. Die Zweideutigkeit begründet das notwendige Umschlagen von Freiheit in Unfreiheit. Aus Hegels dialektischem Naturalismus wird die Idee der versittlichten Teleologie herausgearbeitet, die es erlaubt, jenes Umschlagen freiheitlich umzudeuten. This book presents a Hegelian version of dialectical naturalism through the concept of second nature, analysing its ambiguity in relation to the question of freedom's realisation-or freedom as realisation. It demonstrates that freedom can only be realised through the form of second nature. Precisely this necessity of second nature for the realisation of freedom renders it precarious. The ambiguity underpins the inevitable transition from freedom to unfreedom. From Hegel's dialectical naturalism, the concept of sittlich teleology is derived, which is capable of reinterpreting this transition in a liberating manner.

Recent scholarship on Śaivism has significantly expanded our knowledge of the religious dimensions of Medieval Śaiva movements. However, the philosophical aspects displayed by some of the texts produced in these milieux remain largely unrecognized. The present study helps fill this lacuna by exploring the sophisticated and original philosophical system elaborated by the Kashmiri Śaiva nondualists Utpaladeva (fl. c. 925-975) and Abhinavagupta (fl. c. 975-1025). The book shows that this system cannot be reduced to a mere scriptural exegesis and examines the genesis of the main concepts found in the Pratyabhijñā ("Recognition") philosophy while taking into account the complexity of the philosophical field (already occupied by various currents, Buddhist as well as Brahmanical) in which Utpaladeva's thought was developed. Si les récents travaux de recherche consacrés au śivaïsme ont permis de mieux comprendre les dimensions religieuses des mouvements śivaïtes médiévaux, les aspects proprements philosophiques de certains des textes produits dans ces milieux demeurent largement méconnus. La présenté étude se propose de contribuer à combler cette lacune en explorant le système philosophique complexe et original élaboré par les śivaïtes non dualistes cachemiriens Utpaladeva (925-975) et Abhinavagupta (975-1025). Montrant que ce système ne se réduit pas à une exégèse scripturaire, l'ouvrage examine la genèse des concepts de la philosophie de la Pratyabhijñā ou "Reconnaissance" en prenant en compte la complexité du champ philosophique (déjà investi par divers courants aussi bien bouddhiques que brahmaniques) dans lequel la pensée d'Utpaladeva s'est développée.

Over the last few years there has been a resurgent interest in various scientific disciplines in Popper's arguments. To gain a greater appreciation of Popper's scientific arguments, they need to be viewed in relation to his broader philosophy and where this stands within the history of ideas. This book aims to take seriously those aspects of Popper's writings that have received less attention and wherein he advanced metaphysical, speculative, mystical-poetic, aesthetic and Platonic arguments. Such arguments are crucial for an appreciation of his scientific and political writings. I argue that Popper, much like Wittgenstein previously has been misconstrued as an Anglo-analytic philosopher. This book provides an interpretation of Popper's mature philosophy within his Central-European intellectual context. The aim of which is to open up a fruitful line of investigation into Popper's thought that I hope would continue over the coming years.

Al-Ḥasan ar-Raṣṣāṣ (d. 1188 C.E.) was one of the most prominent representatives of the emerging reception of Basran Muʿtazilism in 12th century Yemen. He composed highly sophisticated works on ontology, causality and the specific theory of attributes that has become known as the theory of "states" ( aḥwāl ). He is therefore a rare case of a Muʿtazilī thinker who left a comprehensive and systematised account of his natural philosophy. Jan Thiele's study makes extensive use of hitherto unexplored manuscripts, thereby providing new insight into a largely unknown chapter of Zaydī and Muslim doctrinal history. Focusing on the later Muʿtazila, this book conveys a nuanced understanding of diachronic developments in the school's teachings in order to refine a rather static perception that prevails in modern scholarship.
