This book deals with the manuscripts from the Wadi Daliyeh (Samaria Papyri) written in Aramaic in the fourth century B.C.E. in the city of Samaria, in the last decades of the Persian period. The book contains a complete edition of the Wadi Daliyeh manuscripts, their new historical interpretation, and an analysis of their legal aspects. The historical interpretation sheds new light on the history of Samaria and its institutions in the Persian period, as well as on the history of the Persian province of Judaea. This book is particulary useful for historians of Palestine in the Second Temple period, for biblical scholars, and for scholars dealing with Near Eastern legal texts.

This study deals with the question of happiness in the book of Qoheleth, starting with the contemporary debate among modern writers concerning the status of various encouraging statements that emerge out of a general context in which "all is vanity". The first part of this study describes the current position of research, examining the debated questions. The second part proposes an exegetical and contextual inquiry of the words for happiness, drawn up by these authors. The third part suggests a way of resolving the enigma of happiness, based upon an additional formula of happiness, located at the beginning of the second half of the book. Gradually, a conviction takes shape: happiness does not have the same status in the two parts of the book. If, at first, happiness is presented as the only alternative given by God to help man to hold on when faced with the fleetingness of things in life, it later becomes an art of living, apt to be taught to future generations.

The language of Ḫaṣāʾiṣ is reputed to be difficult to access, and the thought of its author relatively opaque. With this book, readers now have a key to penetrate the linguistic thought of one of the most important grammarians in the Arabic grammatical tradition. It shows how Ibn Ǧinnī used the concepts of the episteme of his time to systematize grammatical explanatory reasoning. On reading this book, the reader will also perceive the importance attached by Ibn Ǧinnī to the role played by the speaker in language change, in that the speaker is seen as the true agent (ʿāmil) of his discourse. This work also offers the reader a broader perspective on Ibn Ǧinnī's relationship with the grammatical tradition, as it shows, for example, that most of Ibn Ǧinnī's diachronic reflections are borrowed from one of Sībawayhi's forgotten disciples (180/796): al-Aḫfaš al-Awsaṭ (215/830).

Leuenberger-Wenger shows the entanglement of the Christological debate with other fields of conflict concerning the status and authority of different episcopal sees and of monasticism in the church. The study emphasizes the importance of the traditionally neglected second part of the council with its canons and resolutions and argues that these regulations had a deep impact on the structures of the church as well as on the reception of the council and its definition of faith. The evaluation of a wide range of sources places the refusal of the definition of faith in the broader context of the transformation processes of the Roman Empire in Late Antiquity and the rejection of an increasingly institutionalized Byzantine Church. In Das Konzil von Chalcedon und die Kirche entwirft Sandra Leuenberger-Wenger anhand der Konzilsakten ein neues Bild von der Bedeutung dieses Konzils für die Kirche. The spectacular return of the repressed is one of the determinants of the particular rhythm of modernity. The machine also plays its part. When the desires and fears linked to the machine, abandoned, silent, hidden behind the veil of progress, emerge, they create a kind of phenomenology of the machine, which for many decades constituted a point of reference for literary and artistic activities. The machine is, so to speak, interiorised; inextricably linked to affects and desires, it becomes what I propose to call an intimate machine. This volume offers the first in-depth analysis of the literary structure of Hebrews against the background of its most frequently mentioned Sitz im Leben, the ancient synagogue. In the context of the liturgical year and its reconstructed cycle of readings, the text is newly interpreted on the basis of Exod 31:18-32:35 and Jer 31:31-34, so as to demonstrate that Hebrews was an ancient homily for the most important fast-day, Tisha be-Av, on which the destruction of the two temples was commemorated. The first part presents 20th- and 21st-century scholarship on Hebrews and a new structural analysis. The second part offers a detailed discussion of the ancient synagogue and its liturgy. This allows the reconstruction of the readings on which the text of Hebrews is based and a positioning within the liturgical year. The resulting thesis, that Hebrews is an exhortative homily for Tisha be-Av, is confirmed through a motivic analysis of all the biblical texts read on this fast-day. On the basis of the hermeneutical key thereby established, the third part offers seven cumulative readings of the entire text: structural, contextual, intertextual, rhetorical, theological, socio-historical, and hermeneutical-critical. These generate new interpretations and insights within the horizon of current Hebrews scholarship. The present monograph is the first to connect research on the ancient synagogue and its liturgy with a comprehensive interpretation of Hebrews that also discusses alternative form-critical avenues and establishes intertextual connections, especially to relevant rabbinic texts. In 30 BCE, Egypt became a province of the Roman empire. Alongside unbroken traditions-especially of the indigenous Egyptian population, but also among the Greek elite-major changes and slow processes of transformation can be observed. The multi-ethnical population was situated between new patterns of rule and traditional lifeways. This tension between change and permanence was investigated during the conference. The last decades have seen an increase in the interest in Roman Egypt with new research from different disciplines-Egyptology, Ancient History, Classical Archaeology, Epigraphy, and Papyrology-providing new insights into the written and archaeological sources, especially into settlement archaeology.
