La Ciotat, a small port-town in the French Mediterranean, underwent a profound metamorphosis during the nineteenth century. Once a small maritime community, it was transformed into the technical base and shipbuilding centre of the Compagnie des Messageries maritimes , France's largest steam navigation company. This book charts the journey of a maritime society through its industrial grown and discovers its economic, demographic, labour, and social changes. Drawing on unpublished archival material, it explores how technological changes and the dominance of a single private shipping company reshaped the town's identity and redefined its relationship with the sea.

Kleine Schriften , written by the eminent German scholar of Islamic Studies Josef van Ess, is a unique collection of Van Ess' widely scattered short writings, journal articles, encyclopaedia entries, (autobiographical) essays, reviews and lectures, in (mainly) German, English and French, some of which are published here for the first time. It includes a full bibliography of the author's work, in addition to two indexes of classical authors and works, which aim to make accessible the remarkable riches that these Kleine Schriften have to offer. The three-volume collection, carefully selected by the author himself, offers over 150 texts organized primarily along Van Ess' own biography and the history of the discipline. It is divided into twelve parts, beginning with Tübingen where his career began in 1968, and ending with Retrospects and Postscripts for the future, with the thematic complexes Islam and its first options and Muʿtazila as centre pieces. The title of this volume is 'Administration, Prosopography and Appointment Policies in the Roman Empire'. The papers contained in this volume focus on all three of these themes, within the context of the impact of the Roman empire upon the regions it dominated. The papers contained in the first part of the volume concentrate on appointment policies, career structures and the impact of military presence and recuitment, esp. in border provinces, in the period of the Principate (27 B.C. - A.D. 284). In the second part of the volume the reader will find papers on Roman jurists, administrators, and bureaucrats and articles about administrative procedures, the administration of justice, rescripts and the influence of learned juridical treatises in various regions of the Roman empire. The last section of the volume presents contributions on the impact of the Roman imperial administration and appointment policies on communal rights and politics, the composition of local councils, local administrative structures, Romanisation, and social mobility of regional and local notables in various provinces of the Roman Empire.

This volume presents the results of a survey conducted in 2015 and beyond by the Institut für die Kulturen des Alten Orients of the Universität Tübingen in Al-Khashbah, one of the largest Early Bronze Age sites on the Omani Peninsula. Ten monumental buildings, 273 tombs and other structures from the Hafit (3100-2700 BC) and Umm an-Nar periods (2700-2000 BC) were documented here. This makes Al-Khashbah ideally suited for the investigation of the beginnings of complex settlements and social structures in northern Inner Oman at the transition from the 4th to the 3rd millennium BC, because many of the achievements previously attributed to the Umm an-Nar period, such as monumental architecture and the smelting of copper, can already be proven here in the preceding Hafit period. In the Umm an-Nar period, the development of Al-Khashbah continues steadily, giving the site additional importance.
