Our understanding of the medieval Danse macabre is changing with the recent discoveries of a theatrical script from Savoy, and of a related Castilian poem. This collection of texts from the Burgundian realm, France and Savoy, England, Castile-Aragon and the Empire, also contains critical essays that examine these texts and contexts from the fourteenth to the late fifteenth centuries. This volume re-examines the development and impact of the Danse macabre within broader considerations of performance and poetry that focus on Death as a protagonist. It includes texts never before studied or translated and moves beyond the traditional focus on Paris and London to reassess the wide dissemination of this tradition. The volume complements a collection of studies by the same editors (Oosterwijk, Ungeheuer and Léglu) of the visual tradition across Europe, from Burgundy to Finland, Death and the Danse Macabre in Late Medieval Art: Dissemination and Reception .

Bharatanatyam Evolves : From Temple to Theatre and Back Again /

Bharatanatyam is currently one of the most popular Indian classical dance styles, performed throughout India and the world. It originated in southern India, where it was taught by males and performed by female Devadasis, both of whom belonged to the same caste. Traditionally, the dance was associated with Hindu temples and courts and was performed in a variety of sacred and secular settings. Since the early twentieth century, both practitioners of and venues for the dance have expanded. It is now taught and performed globally by people from all castes and nationalities, including teachers and dancers of all genders and religions. Most performances are now public events presented on the concert stage. Anne-Marie Gaston traces the development of Bharatanatyam from its religious and secular roots. She gives details of the teachers who were most influential in the transmission of the dance from traditional to modern practitioners and discusses the role of different interpretations (banis). By describing traditional and modern performances and choreography, she traces changes in the repertoire and presentation that have taken place during the post-revival era. Trends in performances at the MMA, considered the most important venue for Bharatanatyam, are described. Comments from the author's in-depth studies of Bharatanatyam, as both performer and academic, give a historical perspective to the current manifestation of the dance. Her observations are drawn especially from recitals at the Madras Winter Festivals, 2011-15. The volume is profusely illustrated with the author's own photographs.

In The Representations of Women in the Middle Kingdom Tombs of Officials Ľubica Hudáková offers an in-depth analysis of female iconography in the decorative programme of Middle Kingdom non-royal tombs, highlighting changes and innovations in comparison to the Old Kingdom. Previously considered too uniform, the study represents the first systematic investigation of two-dimensional images of women and reveals their variability in space and time. Hudáková examines the roles appointed to women by analyzing how they are depicted in a variety of contexts. Taking into account their postures, gestures, garments, hairstyles, size of the body, age as well as attributes and tools used by them, along with the scene orientation, she traces diachronic and diatopic developments and regional traditions in the Middle Kingdom tomb decoration.

In Between Biblical Criticism and Poetic Rewriting , Samuel Tongue offers an account of the aesthetic and critical tensions inherent in the development of the Higher Criticism of the Bible. Different 'types' of Bible are created through the intellectual and literary pressures of Enlightenment and Romanticism and, as Tongue suggests, it is this legacy that continues to orientate the approaches deemed legitimate in biblical scholarship. Using a number of ancient and contemporary critical and poetic rewritings of Jacob's struggle with the 'angel' (Gen 32:22-32), Tongue makes use of postmodern theories of textual production to argue that it is the 'paragesis', a parasitical form of writing between disciplines, that best foregrounds the complex performativity of biblical interpretation.
