Jewish Immigrants, Nationalism and Finance Sourcing in Argentina : Otherness and Industrial Entrepreneurship /

: "The book represents an innovative and outstanding contribution to the economic, social, and business history of Argentina. It focuses on the factors that conditioned the emergence and development, between 1930 and the early 1960s, of large industrial enterprises founded by Jewish immigrants, with emphasis on the absence of community financial institutions to support their creation and expansion. lt is characterized both by the relevance of the issues it addresses and by the author's ability to conduct original and solid research based on a non-dogmatic conceptual framework, on the analysis of a wide variety of unexplored sources, and the virtuous combination of different scales of observation." Finance of International Trade in the Gulf /

: This book analyses the legal structure and operation of the conventional and Islamic banking systems in the Gulf Arab states. It defines the legal issues involved and case law decided by the English, American and the Gulf Arab states courts in operating the two systems in financing the international trade transactions and covering the concurrent application, the advantages and disadvantages and the problems of each system. This book also gives a particular challenge to the fraud in international trade and considers the development of countertrade and electronic funds transfer as methods of financing some of the international business transactions. This book is very helpful for those who are dealing with the financing of the international trade, their professional advisors, staff of the conventional and Islamic banks and students who study law and commerce as part of their syllabuses of legal and international business studies. This book is also very essential reading for anyone who wants to succeed in the competitive conditions of modern banking business vis-a-vis the international trade in the Gulf Arab states. This book is also very helpful for the lawyer who is called upon to assist the businessman in his ventures or who wants to resolve a problem which has arisen in financing the international business transactions.

Church and settler in colonial Zimbabwe : a study in the history of the Anglican Diocese of Mashonaland/Southern Rhodesia, 1890-1925 /

: This book examines the history of the Anglican Diocese of Mashonaland/Southern Rhodesia (virtually co-extensive with modern Zimbabwe) in the period 1890-1925, when its institutions took shape and its religious character was formed. While work among indigenous communities is outlined, the primary subject is the church's work with white settlers. A fresh general narrative is provided and an examination of clergy recruitment and finance relates events in Mashonaland to developments in global Anglicanism. Among the questions addressed are those of religion and empire, church and state and the complexities of relationship between the Church of England and her overseas extensions, particularly those covering areas of white settlement. Local developments in religious practice are also explored: most striking of these was the settler apprehension of the vast landscapes of South-Central Africa as a locus of the sacred and their custom of veld burial.

Matarenda/Talents in Zimbabwean Pentecostalism : Empowerment, Gender and Development in an African Movement /

: In Matarenda/Talents in Zimbabwean Pentecostalism , the fourteen contributors to this multidisciplinary collection reflect on how Pentecostalism contributes to the empowerment of marginalised societies, how it empowers women in particular through the matarenda (talents) principles, and how it contributes to the development of wider society. All but three of the authors are Zimbabwean Pentecostals. The book deals with such subjects as gender equality, economics and finance, poverty alleviation and sustainable development, education, and entrepreneurship. A remarkable independent Zimbabwean church has harnessed biblical principles from the Parable of the Talents to empower women and those marginalised by economic disasters. It is particularly relevant for understanding the potential of African Pentecostalism in dealing with social and economic challenges.

Urban Regimes of Dispossession in the Global South : A New Debate /

: This edited volume develops a theoretical framework-what we call urban regimes of dispossession -for understanding how urban actors organize dispossession and govern the urban dispossessed, how the urban dispossessed arrange, experience and resist dispossession, and how urban dispossession contributes to creating/expanding capitalist systems or transforming urban societies in the global south. The book's main arguments are built on a survey of the nearly two-hundred-year history of global dispossession studies and solid empirical evidence from three continents-Asia, Africa, and Latin America, and seven countries- Bangladesh, Brazil, Honduras, India, Lebanon, Nigeria, and Uganda. Eighteen scholars bring diverse perspectives and realities on urban dispossession, which will appeal to students, scholars, planners, and practitioners across various social scientific disciplines, including sociology, anthropology, urban studies, political economy, international relations, political science, economics, gender studies, and geography. Contributors are: Shapan Adnan, Orlando Alves dos Santos Junior, Fred Bidandi, David L. Brunsma, Tarcyla Fidalgo Ribeiro, Lakshmi Jahnavi, Marie Kolling, Ana Maria Kumarasamy, Barbara Lipietz, Lipon Mondal, Adrian Murray, John Nagle, Victor Udemezue Onyebueke, Taísa Sanches, Karen Spring, Susan Spronk, Luanda Vannuchi and Julian Walker.

The Roman Empire Third Century 'Crisis' /

: The years from the assassination of Severus Alexander to Diocletian's rise to power (235-284) remain of interest to ancient historians. This period, commonly known as the Third Century "Crisis," exerted a significant influence on the political, economic, and socioreligious developments of late antiquity. This period witnessed assaults on the empire's borders by Germans and Persians, along with an acceleration of changes resulting from these attacks. Through a survey of ancient literary sources and the work of modern scholars, this volume offers an overview of critical issues faced by the empire, such as border wars, the role of the emperor, the Senate, and the equestrian order, as well as issues of finance and currency. Furthermore, specific attention is given to the regions of Gaul, Palmyra, and Egypt.

Debating Economic Policy for South Africa's Post-apartheid Transition: From Scholarship and Ideology to Policy in Practice : Critical Reconstructions of Political Economy, Volume 8...

: The reasons for South Africa's full and rapid post-apartheid embrace of neoliberal economic policy remain controversial. Drawing on the author's own participation in policy debates, this volume establishes there were alternatives available that were either dismissed or not even considered. Explanations for policy failings have to be sought in determinants such as globalisation, financialisation, capital flight, corporate restructuring and Black Economic Empowerment. The text offers extensive surveys of relevant literature including the developmental state, industrial and social policy, privatisation, trade policy, the Harvard School, comparative experience and the deficiencies in the country's National Development Plan and New Growth Path.

Minority religions under Irish law : Islam in national and international context /

: Minority Religions under Irish Law focuses the spotlight specifically on the legal protections afforded in Ireland to minority religions, generally, and to the Muslim community, in particular. Although predominantly focused on the Irish context, the book also boasts contributions from leading international academics, considering questions of broader global importance such as how to create an inclusive environment for minority religions and how to regulate religious tribunals best. Reflecting on issues as diverse as the right to education, marriage recognition, Islamic finance and employment equality, Minority Religions under Irish Law provides a comprehensive and fresh look at the legal space occupied by many rapidly growing minority religions in Ireland, with a special focus on the Muslim community.

: This book is the first ‘groundwork' on Muslim NGOs in contemporary Ghana. It builds upon a database of more than 600 Muslim non-profit associations, foundations and grass-roots organisations whose activities are traced through extensive use of social media. The first part of the book scrutinises the varieties of their activities and operational spaces, their campaigns and target groups, alongside their local, regional, national and international connections. The second part analyses contemporary debates on infaq, sadaqa, waqf and zakat as well as Islamic banking and micro-finance schemes for promoting social welfare among Muslim communities in Ghana.
