As a change in paradigm from our anthropocentric approach to the environment and its resources remains mostly aspirational, non-use measures present themselves as practical regulatory tools to respond to environmental degradation. This edited volume examines moratoria, bans, no-take or entry zones across regimes regulating global goods and commons. It analyses factors that have contributed to the successful adoption and implementation of non-use measures for resources in the high seas, deep seabed, atmosphere, and Antarctica. Tomb security in ancient Egypt from the Predynastic to the Pyramid Age /

Egyptians went to great lengths to protect their dead from the omnipresent threat of robbery by incorporating specially developed architectural features in their tombs. However, the architecture of tomb security has rarely been studied as a subject in its own right and is usually treated as a secondary topic in publications of a scholarly nature, which tend to regard its role as incidental to the design of the tomb rather than perhaps being the driving force behind it. This issue had been raised in the early Twentieth Century by Reisner (1908: 11), who suggested that the rapid evolution of Egyptian tomb substructures was as a result of the desire for tomb security and more ostentatious tombs, rather than a development spurred by religious or funerary practices.

The Vase Bally Captives on a Late Predynastic Decorated Stone Vessel: a Study of the 'Bound Prisoner' and Related Motifs in Early Egypt

The Vase Bally, named after its first owner, Swiss businessman Eduard Bally (1847-1926) who acquired it in Luxor in 1904, is one of the most exquisite late Predynastic decorated stone vessels ever discovered in Egypt. First published and discussed by Egyptologist Henri Wild in 1948, the vessel, made of dark-green serpentine and measuring 18.6 cm in height, and its exceptional figural decoration, showing three bound captives in raised relief, deserve a new in-depth study in the light of current research on Predynastic and Early Dynastic art and iconography. This lavishly illustrated book offers a detailed study of this unique object and its decoration, as well as discussions of its possible ritual use, meaning, and sociocultural significance. Moreover, it places its iconography within the early development of the ‘bound prisoner’ and related motifs of interpersonal violence at a time that was crucial for state formation in Egypt. Without doubt, the visual expression of domination and violence against real or potential opponents was a fundamental aspect of the self-image and representation of the ruling elite in those times. Exhaustive catalogues of related objects and representations, including some lesser known or even hitherto unpublished artefacts, as well as famous objects of ‘art’ such as the Narmer Macehead and Palette, are an integral part of the study.

Irish Quaker biographers have focused on ministers, the influential and wealthy; many biographies are also unstructured and selective, leaving gaps in the narrative. The current work uses the life and family of John Boles (1661-1731), a Quaker stalwart for 50 years, as a case study for the biographer, introducing the major sources and showing how they can be deployed to 'resurrect' the contributions of the anonymous Quaker majority. As the biography is developed, information is explored and analyzed to construct reliable genealogical charts; information is culled from Friends' records to document the contributions and failures of family members in the context of their Quaker meetings; land records are consulted to measure and assess their gradual accumulation of wealth and the historical context is discussed as a backdrop to their evolving socio-economic status - all topics essential for comprehensive Quaker biographies and family histories.

This volume is part of the collaborative project of the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) and Institute of Development Studies Kolkata (IDSK) on documents pertaining to economic history and quality of life in Northern India in the late nineteenth century. The present volume (divided into three parts, A, B, and C) roughly covers the broad period of the 1880s and 1890s. Northern India here means what was generally known as the North-Western Provinces (NWP), and the province of Oudh (till 1877, after which it was merged with the NWP) in the late nineteenth century, excluding the Punjab province. Documents included in this volume focus on a wide spectrum of human activities in northern India. They are materials from diverse fields, such as agriculture, forestry, population, public health, jails, education and sanitation, in each of which the British Raj was involved in collecting information and directing the courses of development in more than one sense. These documents touch on various kinds of agricultural knowledge such as agricultural operations, agricultural technologies, manure, and material conditions of agricultural classes, population change, health and mortality, literacy and primary education, values of livestock and cattle diseases, production and export of cash crops, production and supply of food grains, distribution of waste lands, forests and reclamation of jungle lands, operation of income tax, human disease and mortality, and scarcity and famines. A section on the report of native newspapers has been added to evaluate the responses of educated Indians on some of these developments. Other reports include ones on agricultural improvements, public works and veterinary developments. Touching on a number of crucial aspects of material conditions and quality of life of people in Northern India in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, the volume stands as a valuable source book for the students of both economic and social history, and of human development in India as well.

This book charts the origins, development and functions of these two texts through the lens of canonicity. It examines how the books went from controversial to indispensable as they became the common language for discussing the Prophet's legacy among the various Sunni schools of law. The Life Cycles of Counterfactuals in the History of Greek : Aspect, Modality and Typology /

We constantly refer to counterfactual events-things that didn't happen but could have-through conditional, wish, and modal constructions. Yet, despite their ubiquity, we still know surprisingly little about how these constructions have evolved across languages and through history. This book breaks new ground by tracing, for the first time, the development of counterfactual systems across different constructions, texts, linguistic registers, and historical stages. Drawing on extensive corpus data from Indo-European languages and nearly three millennia of Greek, it offers the first unified account of counterfactual and avertive constructions as core expressions of non-realization. In doing so, it also proposes a revised model of the counterfactual life cycle-one that integrates semantic, morphosyntactic, and pragmatic dimensions-providing typologists with a powerful framework for exploring how counterfactual expressions evolve across languages.
