Justification by faith : the origin and development of a central Pauline theme /

This study offers a fresh analysis of the place which "justification by faith" held in Paul's life and thought. In distinction from past attempts to define "justification" in relation to a logical "center", the investigation proceeds by assessing the relationship between this theme and two significant points in Paul's career: his conversion and his letter to Rome. The first chapter surveys a number of interpreters of Paul from William Wrede through E.P. Sanders. In an attempt to overcome the deficiencies of earlier proposals, the work then explores the soteriology of two early Jewish writings proximate to Paul, 1QS and Pss. Sol. Paul's references to his preconversion life reveal a connection between these forms of Judaism and that which Paul knew, making it likely that within a short time after his conversion Paul's soteriology underwent a radical change involving his adoption of ideas inherent to his later arguments on "justification by faith". Paul's aim in writing to Rome discloses that he came to regard "justification" as indispensable to his Gospel and relevant to issues beyond Jew-Gentile relations. This research challenges the "new perspective on Paul" (Dunn) while providing a historical and theological description of Paul's understanding of "justification by faith."

The work outlines the main issues in a field of study which has largely been neglected. A large number of hajj travelogues are described as a textual type integrating religious discourse into the form of the journey. Special attention is given to their intertextual embedding in the broader discursive tradition of the hajj. Since the corpus is seen as dynamic and responsive to historical developments, the texts are situated in their historical context and the subsequent phases of globalisation. It is shown how in travelogues forms of religious subjectivity are constructed and expressed.

This book endeavors to determine why by focusing on the conceptualization of gender and analyzing "law in the making" and the shifts in debates (2012-2018). In 2012, a ruling on khulʿ -divorce was issued by the Sharia Court and was well received by civil society, but when the debate shifted in 2018 to how to "harmonize" international law with Islamic standards, the process came to a standstill. These developments and the various power relations cannot be properly understood without taking into consideration the terminology used and redefined in these debates.

This volume traces the development of Aristotle's hypothetical syllogistic through antiquity, and shows for the first time how it later became misidentified with the logic of the rival Stoic school. By charting the origins of this error, the book illuminates elements of Aristotelian logic that have been obscured for almost two thousand years, and raises important issues concerning the distinctive roles of semantic and syntactic analysis in theories of logical consequence. The first chapters of the book deal with the original Aristotelian hypothetical syllogistic, and explain how Aristotle's later followers began to conflate it with Stoic logic. The final chapters examine in detail the two most crucial surviving treatments of the subject, Boethius's On hypothetical syllogisms and On Cicero's Topics , which carried this conflation into the Middle Ages.

Adaptation of the Jarawa to Andaman Islands /

Hunting and gathering constitute the oldest human mode of subsistence and the only one for which there is an uninterrupted record from the human origins to the present. Today, there are a handful of hunter-gatherers who subsist exclusively through the hunting of wild animals, fishing, and gathering of wild plants. The Jarawa of the Andaman Islands are one among them. Within the spectrum of foraging societies, the Jarawa belong to the category of 'immediate return' foragers, as they tend to consume most of the food resources immediately. The present study provides a detailed account of the foraging and adaptive strategies of the Jarawa. The interaction of the Jarawa with the outside world is one of multifaceted inequality which places them in an extremely weak position against the outsiders. The hunting-gathering societies appear extremely vulnerable in the event of a direct or indirect threat from various forces, particularly encroachment of their territories by 'others', invasion of modernization, etc., as an aftermath of contact with the outsiders. The current work discusses the impact of contact on the resource base, health, population, habits, and material culture of the Jarawa in the post-hostility phase (post-1997 period). The present work on the Jarawa will be of immense help to researchers studying human adaptation in the remote past. Furthermore, it will also help administrators and policymakers in designing meticulous policies for the protection and development of Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups of India.

This volume examines the earliest production and exchange of copper and its alloys in the Persian Gulf, a major metal supply route for the Bronze Age societies of Western Asia. Weeks addresses the geological and technological background to copper production in southeastern Arabia and contextualizes evidence for major fluctuations in prehistoric copper production. The core of the volume contists of compositional and isotopic analyses. The relationship between specialized copper production, exchange, and the development of social complexity in early Arabia is examined, and the author addresses the broader archaeological issue of the Bronze Age tin trade, which linked vast areas of Western Asia, from the Indo-Iranian borderlands to the Aegean, in the third millennium BC.
