ناصِرُ الدِّين ابنُ المُنيِّر تلميذٌ وفيٌّ مُخلِصٌ لأبي القاسِم للقَبَّاريِّ، سجَّل تفاصيلَ حياته؛ كي تكون تطبيقاتٍ عمليّةً لتعاليم القُرآن الكريم والسُّنّة الشَّريفة، من دُون ابتداعٍ. كان القَبَّاريُّ دقيقًا في القول والعمل، مُتحرِّيًا في التَّمييز بين الحلال والحَرام، مُحترِزًا من إدْخال طعامٍ أو شَرَابِ في الجَوْف إلَّا من أبْواب الحلال، مُتيقِّظًا في مُعامَلة النّاس؛ حتَّى لا يُؤذي أحدَهم أو يُضِرُّه ولو بأقلِّ القليل. فحرَص ابنُ المُنيِّر على إبْرازها في هذا العَمَل الذي كتَبَه كشاهِد عِيَانٍ، مُعاصِر لها بنفسه، غير مُجامِلٍ لشَيْخه أو مُبالِغ في حُبِّه له. Nāṣir al-Dīn b. al-Munīr was a loyal and sincere student of Abī al-Qāsim al-Qabbārī. He recorded the details of al-Qabbārī's life to serve as practical applications of the teachings of the Qur'ān and the Sunnah- without innovation. Al-Qabbārī was precise in both speech and action, meticulous in distinguishing between the lawful (ḥalāl) and the unlawful (ḥarām), and cautious about allowing any food or drink into his body except that is earned in a ḥalāl ways . He was vigilant in his dealings with people, ensuring that he did not harm or hurt anyone, even in the slightest way. Ibn al-Munīr was keen to highlight this in the work he wrote, as a firsthand witness to these actions, without flattering his teacher or exaggerating his love for him.

Ḍiyāʾ al-Dīn al-Makkī (d. 559/1163-64) was a specialist of theology and law and the preacher ( khaṭīb ) of the Shāfi'ī congregation in Rayy of his time. Ḍiyāʾ al-Dīn is, however, best known as the father of the famous theologian and critic of Avicenna (d. 428/1037), Fakhr al-Dīn Rāzī (d. 606/1210), often referred to as Ibn al-Khaṭīb, certainly in his younger years. Ḍiyāʾ al-Dīn studied Ashʿarī theology in Nishapur under Abu ʼl-Qāsim b. Salmān al-Anṣārī (d. 512/1118), himself a student of Imām al-Ḥaramayn al-Juwaynī (d. 478/1085). Besides, he also studied in Marwarūdh, hometown of the Shāfiʿī jurist al-Ḥusayn b. Masʿūd al-Farrāʾ al-Baghawī (d. 516/1122). The work of which the one remaining volume is published here is one of the largest works in early Ashʿarī theology. It gives a fine impression of the discussions around some of the main differences between the Muʿtazila and the Ashʿarīs, besides its importance as a source of his son's ideas.

The present book investigates three short late Mamluk treatises about land properties (waqf) in the Palestinian city of Hebron, which the prophet Muhammad granted to Tamīm al-Darī. The treatise entitled Ḍawʾ al-sārī li-maʿrifat ḫabar Tamīm al-Dārī by al-Maqrīzī (d. 845/1442) is the core of the book. It is edited here for the first time on the sole basis of the copy corrected by the author. A facsimile of the manuscript is also provided at the end of the book. In order to illuminate the discourse on property rights and donation that prevailed in the Mamluk period and al-Maqrīzī's position, two additional treatises dealing with the same issue are included. The first is al-Ǧawāb al-ǧalīl ʿan ḥukm balad al-Ḫalīl by Ibn Ḥaǧar al-ʿAsqalānī (d. 852/1448). The second is al-Faḍl al-ʿamīm fī iqṭāʿ Tamīm by al-Suyūṭī (911/1505). The three texts are fully translated and annotated and preceded by a thorough introduction.

In the Islamic world, the writing of biographical reference works has a very long tradition. In the field of philosophy and other rational sciences such as medicine, one could, for example, mention Isḥāq b. Ḥunayn's (d. 298/910) Taʾrīkh al-aṭibbāʾ wal-ḥukamāʾ or Ibn Abī Uṣaybiʿa's (d. ca 668/1270) ʿUyūn al-anbāʾ fī taʾrīkh al-aṭibbāʾ . The present two-volume biographical dictionary of philosophers and physicians of all times thus continues a centuries-old tradition. Its author, Quṭb al-Dīn Ishkawarī Lāhijī (d. ca. 1088-95/1677-78), was a student of the great Safavi thinker and founder of the School of Isfahan in philosophy, Mīr Dāmād (d. 1041/1631). This is also obvious from his spiritually-orientated, inclusive understanding of the various actors and episodes in the history of philosophy. The 19th century saw an enormous shift in the authority structure of Iranian and Iraqi Twelver Shiʿism, with the victory of a theological school (Usulism) that stressed the power of the clergy. This is well known. What is less well known is that there was a parallel development of authority in the Shaykhi school and its offshoot, the Babi sect. Here, especially in later forms of Babism, the Shiʿite claim to charismatic authority reached its limits in hyperbolic attestations of divinity. The present text is in two parts: a study of how Shaykhism bifurcated into a form close to orthodoxy next to the highly unorthodox Babi movement. Part two examines how Babism changed after the death in 1850 of its founder, the Bāb.
