Dikes and Society in Rural China: The Jianghan Plain, 1788-2010s /

: To feed an ever-growing population in a water-rich region, the people of the Jianghan Plain in Central China constantly built dikes and polders. As China's political system changed dramatically from 1788 to the 2010s, the governance of Jianghan's dikes and polders also changed, moving from indirect supervision by the state to direct management. This shift has dramatically improved the security of the dike systems and has had a profound impact on the Jianghan people's lives. Based on rarely used local gazetteers and newly available archival materials, this book uses a multidimensional interactive approach to explore water control and state-society relations in rural China over the past three centuries.

Classics from prior centuries continue to fascinate theatre artists. They never stop thinking of ways to stage these works to reach actual audiences. By referring, in the title of our book, to French director Antoine Vitez's famous quote "make theatre with everything", we want to point out the persistence of a problematic causing artists to not only take into account the evolution of dramatic forms, but also the broader cultural regime, digital for the 21st Century, within which these transpositions take place. The studies gathered in this volume bring a fresh perspective to the contemporary performing practices in Quebec and in Europe using literary texts, and illuminate many theoretical and methodological issues in the process.

What's in a Name? A Grammar of Pluralism and Foundations of the Vernacular /

: Would it be possible to overcome the dualism of universalism and relativism that the story of the Tower of Babel portends, and modernity perpetuates? Between the dominant paradigms of the dualism of the classical and the vernacular, of universal grammar of Chomskian bio-linguistics and hermeneutic relativism of Steiner, of the ideal and ordinary language theories of Wittgensteinian socio-linguistics, this dichotomy plays itself out, again and again. Tracing the genealogy of the fundamental difference between the presuppositions of a grammar of pluralism and of universal grammar to the disagreement between Plato and Aristotle on the theory of forms, this book brings into focus the dramatic and crucial changes wrought in the liturgy of the Eucharist, in the 13th century, that consolidated Aristotelianism as the dominant regime of the Christian Church and laid the foundations of universal grammar both of the European modernity and of the modern world at large. It argues that it is the vernacular traditions however, that continually challenge this regime within different religious orthodoxies and in modernity with the reiteration and re-affirmation of the theory of the true name as the basis of a grammar of pluralism.

Brill's companion to the reception of Socrates /

: Brill's Companion to the Reception of Socrates , edited by Christopher Moore, provides almost unbroken coverage, across three-dozen studies, of 2450 years of philosophical and literary engagement with Socrates - the singular Athenian intellectual, paradigm of moral discipline, and inspiration for millennia of philosophical, rhetorical, and dramatic composition. Following an Introduction reflecting on the essentially "receptive" nature of Socrates' influence (by contrast to Plato's), chapters address the uptake of Socrates by authors in the Classical, Hellenistic, Roman, Late Antique (including Latin Christian, Syriac, and Arabic), Medieval (including Byzantine), Renaissance, Early Modern, Late Modern, and Twentieth-Century periods. Together they reveal the continuity of Socrates' idiosyncratic, polyvalent, and deep imprint on the history of Western thought, and witness the value of further research in the reception of Socrates.

Die Unfähigkeit, sich zu erkennen : Sophokles' Tragödien /

: This book interprets all seven Sophoclean tragedies (5th century B.C.) as a whole, focussing on the aspect of individuals being guilty of not reaching proper conclusions about their own selves and their situation, although they possess the means and ability to do so. Chapter I offers exact definitions of the concepts employed in analyzing the tragedies. Chapters II-VIII each contain a detailed interpretation of one of Sophocles' seven tragedies. Chapter IX ('Tableau') presents the dramatic works within the context of Greek history of thought and politics of their time, while Chapter X sheds some light on how Sophoclean concepts were continued in the comedies of Menander. This study should not only prove helpful to scholars in the field of literary studies, but also to historians, philosophers and all those interested in history of thought and cultural history, since it examines in a fundamental way the thought of one of the most important poets of ancient Europe.
