Towards a Revival of Analytical Philosophy of History: Around Paul A. Roth's Vision of Historical Sciences presents the state of the art in the philosophy of history. The purpose of this book is to discuss the revival of analytical philosophy of history proposed by Paul A. Roth, a world-known analytical philosopher of the social sciences and the humanities. The first four papers outline the reasons for the decline of philosophy of history, its present phase of development, and its possible future. The other authors discuss important questions of this field of research including: the ontological status of the past, the epistemological assumptions of historical research, the explanatory dimensions of the narrative. In the last group of papers, the authors apply some of Roth's theoretical ideas within their own fields of research. Contributors are: Krzysztof Brzechczyn, Nancy D. Tell el-Fara'in, the site of ancient Buto, is one of the most imposing mounds in the Northwest Delta. Situated roughly four kilo-meters north of the hamlet of E1 Aguzein on the main road linking Kafr-el-Sheikh and Dissuq, the tell occupies the 900 meters that separate the villages of Baz and Sekhmowi and measures slightly more than one kilometer from north to south. The jagged remains of mud-brick walls of the last occupation of the site give it a gaunt but dramatic skyline and make it visible for miles around. The area of domestic occupation rises in two massive mounds, separated by a dusty, slightly undulating plain between two and three hundred meters in breadth. One naturally thinks of the bipartite nature of ancient Buto, and since the cache of bronzes which Engelbach published in the early '20s and in which Horus of Pe figured prominently was discovered on the southern of these two hills, the members of the present expedition have dubbed that mound "Pe", and its northern counterpart "Dep". Situated between and to the east of these two hills of debris is a fairly well-preserved temenos wall of mud brick, rectangular in shape, which seems orientated towards the west.

Groaning Tears examines suicide in Greek tragedy in light of the fifth-century ethical climate. No full-scale work has previously been devoted to this pervasive topic. The particular focus of identifying suicide as a response to the expectations of popular ethics and social demands makes it useful for scholars and students of drama, ethics and sociology. Chapter one establishes the ethical background of audiences in the fifth century while chapters two through five examine suicide in the context of whole plays based on motivational distinctions: to avoid disgrace and preserve an honorable reputation; to avoid further suffering; to end grief; and to sacrifice oneself for a greater good. The final chapter considers a drama of lighter tone that presents suicide in all of its ethical and theatrical aspects.
