Body Ideas and Political Communities in Eric Voegelin's Early Work on Race /

: Eric Voegelin's "Rassenbücher", both published in Germany only a few months apart in the tumultuous year of 1933, had until recently received relatively limited attention. These works were often considered merely a youthful episode preceding Voegelin's American exile. However, this perception has dramatically changed in recent times. On the one hand, the systematic analysis carried out in these works has finally been acknowledged for its complexity and has been integrated into the larger, never-completed project of a "Theory of Government". The unconventional aims of this project remained pivotal to Voegelin's later work. On the other hand, the renewed importance of corporeality and the concept of race in contemporary political thought encourages a closer investigation of the role played by bodily ideas in the formation of political communities. This prompts the question of whether Voegelin's concepts can be applied to broader geographical and historical contexts. See Less

Herodian's World : Empire and Emperors in the III Century /

: The History of the Empire from the Death of Marcus of Herodian in eight books, written in Greek, is a key source for the period from the reign of Commodus (AD 180) to that of Gordian III (238). Herodian is an eyewitness and the only contemporary historian whose work has come down to us in full. His point of view is all the more valuable because he is an outsider with respect to both court historiography, whose flattery he stigmatized, and to senatorial historians, represented mainly by Cassius Dio and by the biographies in the Historia Augusta . Nonetheless, Herodian has often been harshly criticized as a historian. This volume aims to shed light on the different areas and themes in which his historical work moves - literary technique, political lexicon, religious conception, geographical space, economic, political, cultural and military themes - to better understand the relevance of his historiographical approach and his historical thought.

Myth, History and Archaeology : Essays and Reviews, 2000-2025 /

: A bronze mirror of the fourth century BC shows a she-wolf suckling infant twins. You may think that's a familiar story, but who are the other figures in the scene, and why is there a lion so prominent in the foreground? The image typifies the problems involved in studying the history and evolution of mythic stories in the ancient world. This collection of studies, prompted by a famous archaeologist's quasi-historical reinterpretation of the Romulus legend, seeks to achieve greater clarity by avoiding abstract concepts like 'oral tradition' or 'cultural memory' and paying close attention to what the primary sources presuppose.

Socio-Poiesis: A Theory on Liberation and Suffering : Toward a New Ethics of Shared Creation and Emancipation /

: Socio-Poiesis is a neologism coined to integrate and intersect theory and practice across several branches of the humanities, including social sciences, psychoanalysis, practical wisdom, Eastern philosophies, ethics, household management, and political philosophy. In this theory, there is a significant point of convergence with the ideas of thinkers like Erich Fromm, Adam Schaff, Adam Blaner, Jacob Moreno, Robin George Collingwood, and others.
