J.-C., le Brutus se présente comme une histoire de l'éloquence romaine depuis ses origines et ses sources grecques jusqu'à l'époque de sa rédaction, mais entend surtout répondre aux défis institutionnels et intellectuels qu'a fait naître la dictature de César. Le traité autorise ainsi des lectures très diverses, qui sont souvent restées isolées les unes des autres. À travers une approche pluridisciplinaire rassemblant des contributeurs de spécialités diverses, cet ouvrage cherche à rendre compte de la réflexion cicéronienne dans toute sa richesse en examinant les enjeux historiographiques, prosopographiques, rhétoriques, philosophiques et politiques du traité. Il propose une réflexion synthétique et originale sur ce texte majeur, essentiel à la compréhension de la République tardive. Cicero's dialogue Brutus offers a history of Roman eloquence from its origins and Greek roots up to the time of the work's composition (46 BC) in the late Republic. It forms part of Cicero's response to the political and intellectual changes brought about by Caesar's dictatorship and has therefore attracted considerable scholarly attention from a number of fields. However, scholarly discourse has frequently remained isolated. This volume addresses the need to look at Cicero's treatise from an interdisciplinary angle and assembles contributions from scholars of historiography, prosopography, rhetoric, philosophy and politics. It thus puts forward a coherent and genuine interpretation of Cicero's Brutus that showcases the significance of this text for our understanding of the final years of the Roman Republic.

Beyond What is Written examines Erasmus' and Beza's multiple editions of the New Testament and the vast body of annotations which accompany these editions. This study provides a new understanding of the many conjectures on the New Testament text proposed by these two renowned scholars as part of their New Testament projects. As a consequence, it not only elucidates their different approaches to New Testament textual criticism, but also clarifies the nature and role of conjectural emendation in sixteenth-century scholarship. As a piece of historical research, this investigation into conjectures in the work of Erasmus and Beza also contributes to the ongoing debate on the nature and task of textual criticism today. This book examines solutions to the crisis of modernity proposed by the Spanish philosopher Miguel de Unamuno and the Mexican philosopher Antonio Caso. Acceptance of the objective claims of modern scientific rationality and the consequent rejection of the objective validity of artistic, moral, and religious claims generates the crisis of modernity. The problem is that of justifying artistic, moral, and religious claims. Miguel de Unamuno in his classic work, The Tragic Sense of Life , addresses the conflict between the belief in personal immortality and modern scientific rationality. Holding that there is no rational justification for the belief in immortality, Unamuno finds a solution in a "saving scepticism" to act "as if" he deserved immortality. In his book Existence as Economy, as Art, and Charity Caso attempts to create an aposteriori metaphysics based on the "current" results of science supplemented by the intuitions of art and morality. In doing so, Caso believes that he has enlarged the scope of the knowable to include objects of art, morality, and religion. Unamuno, by accepting the strict line of demarcation between faith and reason has no other recourse but to turn to decisionism. By turning to intuitionism, Caso believes that he has blurred the line of demarcation. Decisionism and intuitionism, therefore, are worthy of further exploration.

Dabei wird zunächst die Grundlegung dieses Verhältnisses in der abendländischen Metaphysik und in der Phänomenologie, insbesondere im philosophischen Denken Henrys, in den Blick genommen. Darauf aufbauend werden durch Vergleiche zwischen Henrys Philosophie einerseits und den Ansätzen Meister Eckharts, Fichtes, der christlichen Theologie und fernöstlicher Religionen andererseits religionsphilosophische Perspektiven dieses Verhältnisses aufgezeigt. Schließlich werden die ethischen Konsequenzen des Verhältnisses von Immanenz und Einheit analysiert und dessen existentiell-lebenspraktische Bedeutung herausgestellt. Daher bietet die Festschrift einen wichtigen Beitrag zum Verständnis des für die Philosophie Michel Henrys so bedeutenden Verhältnisses von Immanenz und Einheit. Based on the oeuvre of Michel Henry, the contributions collected in the Festschrift "Immanenz und Einheit" examine the relation between immanence and unity under general systematic and practical aspects. First, the foundation of this relation in occidental metaphysics and in phenomenology, especially in the thinking of Michel Henry, is analysed. Then, the view of Michel Henry is compared with those of Meister Eckhard, Fichte, Christian theology and eastern religions in order to develop the perspectives of this relation for the Philosophy of Religion. Furthermore, the consequences of the relation between immanence and unity for ethics and its existential significance are considered. Thus, the Festschrift offers a significant contribution to the understanding of the relationship between immanence and unity which is especially relevant for the thinking of Michel Henry.

For the reconstruction of early Christianity, the lives of early Christians, their world of ideas, their ways of living, and their literature. Early Christian manuscripts - documents and literary texts - are pivotal archaeological artefacts. However, the manuscripts often came to us in fragmentary conditions, incomplete or with gaps and missing lines. Others appear to form a corpus, belong to an archive, or are connected with each other as far as theme or purpose are concerned. The present collection comprises of nine essays about individual or a set of certain manuscripts. With their essays the authors aim to present special approaches to early Christian manuscripts and, consequently, demonstrate methodically how to deal with them. The scope of topics ranges from the reconstruction of fragmentary manuscripts to the significance of amulets and from the discussion of individual fragments to the handling of the known manuscripts of a specific Christian text or a whole archive of papyri.

A sequel to the volume, Akbar and the Jesuits , translated into English by C.H. Payne, in 1930, it describes the encounters of Jesuit missionaries in the Mughal court under Emperor Jahangir (r.1605-1627). The book is divided into three parts, the first part being the main theme of the book, which talks about the Jesuit account of court activities and their religious mission. The second part contains the accounts, which include the Travels of Benedict Goës and the third part is about the Jesuit mission to Pegu and the deputation of Portuguese emissaries to Goa. These parts discusses the first decades of the seventeenth century concerning the political happenings in the Mughal court and the Portuguese missions to South East and East Asia. The first part covers the infamous rebellion of Prince Salim against his father Emperor Akbar (r.1556-1605). It also covers the conversion of two Mughal princes to Christianity, the Jesuit father's mission to the Agra court, inter-faith debates between the Jesuit fathers and Muslim clergies, the Mughal king's reverence to Jesus Christ, and the neo-converts to the Christian faith. The second part of this book talks about Benedict Goës trip from Lahore, which was another Mughal capital, to Yarkand, situated in the current Xinjiang autonomous province of China, and Suchou in mainland China. The third part talks about the establishment of Portuguese rule in Burma with the Portuguese occupation of Pegu, discussing the conflicts between the Portuguese and Arakanese rulers and the establishment of Portuguese adventurer and mercenary Filipe de Brito e Nicote at Syriam.
