It is a consolidated tradition that the 'Proceedings of the International Congresses of Coptic Studies' include both papers organized thematically - according to sections and panels - and a larger group of general reportraits, provided with a rich bibliography, about new research trends and acquisitions in a particular field of Coptology: art, archaeology, literature, linguistics, monasticism, Gnosticism, magic, etc. 'The Proceedings of the Tenth International Congress of Coptic Studies', in particular, contain the reportraits delivered during the Cairo Congress of 2008 (covering the period 2002-2008) and those pronounced during the Rome Congress of 2012 (covering the period 2008-2014), the latter characterized by two new reportraits: "Shenutean studies" and "Ethiopic studies in relation to Egyptian culture". Moreover, it is worth mentioning that for the first time some papers are organized in panels dedicated to very specific topics, in which current research is particularly alive, such as "Bawit: a monastic community, its structure and texts", "Thebes in Late Antiquity", or "The reconstruction and edition of Coptic Biblical Manuscripts". The outcome is a series of tools for the study of Christian Egypt and essays about Coptic literature, art and archaeology seen on the backdrop of Late Antique and Medieval Egyptian society and religion.

In Hajj Travelogues: Texts and Contexts from the 12th Century until 1950 Richard van Leeuwen maps the corpus of hajj accounts from the Muslim world and Europe. The work outlines the main issues in a field of study which has largely been neglected. A large number of hajj travelogues are described as a textual type integrating religious discourse into the form of the journey. Special attention is given to their intertextual embedding in the broader discursive tradition of the hajj. Since the corpus is seen as dynamic and responsive to historical developments, the texts are situated in their historical context and the subsequent phases of globalisation. It is shown how in travelogues forms of religious subjectivity are constructed and expressed.

Panopolis, the modern town of Akhmîm in Southern Egypt, was in Graeco-Roman times an important religious and cultural centre. Its gigantic temple was a stronghold of traditional Egyptian religion. In Late Antiquity it became a major centre of Hellenistic literature and learning and, at the same time, of Coptic monasticism. The sources for Graeco-Roman Panopolis are numerous and diverse. They not only include numerous texts of all genres in various scripts and languages, but archaeological artefacts too. This volume brings together seventeen contributions, dealing with epigraphy, both hieroglyphic and Greek, Greek papyri, Demotic funerary texts, Coptic literature and local monastic architecture. The monograph is the first special study and a complete catalogue of the ancient Egyptian shabti statuettes in the collection of the Odesa Archaeological Museum of the NAS of Ukraine. This group of monuments makes more than a sixth of the total number of Egyptian artifacts in the museum. Shabtis of the Odesa collection date from the 17th Dynasty to the Late Period and are represented by the objects of stone, wood, faience, and clay. Part of the shabtis has preserved inscriptions with the names and titles of their owners, and the text of the Spell 6 of the Book of the Dead is also written on seven shabtis. The monograph includes museum data, parameters, description, photographs, hieroglyphic transcription, transliteration, and annotated translation of the inscriptions available on the objects.

The two cemeteries of Amara West in Sudan, a town founded in around 1300 BC as a new centre for the colonial pharaonic administration of Kush (Upper Nubia), were excavated by the British Museum?s Amara West Research Project between 2009 and 2016. This book focused on the ceramic vessels placed in the burials, between c. 1300 BC and the 8th century BC. The comprehensive analyses of the pottery, accompanied by a full catalogue, provides insights into the role of ceramic vessels for funerary purposes, trade networks between Upper Nubia, Egypt and farther afield. The inclusion of Nubian hand-made vessels with some burials reflects aspects of cultural entanglement, and raises questions of identity and cultural affiliation, particularly in the transition between the period of pharaonic occupation and its aftermath. An introduction by Michaela Binder provides an orientation to the architecture and archaeology of the cemeteries.
