The Twelver Shia in Modern Times : Religious Culture & Political History /
:
This volume - grown out of an international conference at Freiburg University in 1999 - deals with various aspects of Shiite Islam since the 18th century. It is divided into two major parts, the first of which is dedicated to traditional institutions of theology and learning and their transformation in modern times. The second part treats internal debates and the activities of Shiite dissidents, showing that Shiism is far from being uniform. Ideological and political developments in the 20th century and especially the Islamic Revolution in Iran have shaped the image of modern Shiism more than any other tendencies and are therefore also discussed in greater detail in Parts three and four. This book reflects the state of the art in this field of Islamic studies, its 21 contributions covering three centuries and a vast geographical range.

The end of prisons : reflections from the decarceration movement /
:
This book brings together a collection of social justice scholars and activists who take Foucault's concept of discipline and punishment to explain how prisons are constructed in society from nursing homes to zoos. This book expands the concept of prison to include any institution that dominates, oppresses, and controls. Criminologists and others, who have been concerned with reforming or dismantling the criminal justice system, have mostly avoided to look at larger carceral structures in society. In this book, for example, scholars and activists question the way patriarchy has incapacitated women and imagine the deinstitutionalization of people with disabilities. In a time when popular sentiment critiques the dominant role of the elites (the "one percenters"), the state's role in policing dissenting voices, school children, LGBTQ persons, people of color, and American Indian Nations, needs to be investigated. A prison, as defined in this book, is an institution or system that oppresses and does not allow freedom for a particular group. Within this definition, we include the imprisonment of nonhuman animals and plants, which are too often overlooked.

Apocalyptic Time /
:
Millennial movements are characterized by their nature and perception of time, and the ways in which these groups confront inevitable disappointment and then return to "normal" time. This is the theme for the book Apocalyptic Time . The volume consists of revised essays based on presentations made at an international conference devoted to that theme. Authors adopt a number of disciplinary approaches to the topic, analyzing millennial movements from the three Abrahamic faiths, as well as from the East. This book will be of particular interest to students of millennial movements, who wish to benefit from the comprehensive and comparative view it gives of the phenomenon, based on a wide variety of cases. This work greatly contributes to the theory of millennialism, by supplying specific data and theoretical reflection.

Time and eternity in Jewish mysticism : that which is before and that which is after /
:
Time and eternity are concepts that have occupied an important place within Jewish mystical thought. This present volume gives pride of place to these concepts, and is one of the first works to bring together diverse voices on the subject. It offers a multivalent picture of the topic of time and eternity, not only by including contributions from an array of academics who are leaders in their fields, but by proposing six diverse approaches to time and eternity in Jewish mysticism: the theoretical approach to temporality, philosophical definitions, the idea of time and pre-existence, the idea of historical time, the idea of experiential time, and finally, the idea of eternity beyond time. This multivocal treatment of Jewish mysticism and time as based on variant academic approaches is novel, and it should lay the groundwork for further discussion and exploration.

A time of change : questioning the "collapse" of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka /
:
This work reassesses the apparent collapse of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, through explicit reference to the archaeological record. The study of Anuradhapura's terminal period has long been dominated by an over-reliance upon textual sources, resulting in the establishment of a monocausal and politically charged narrative that depicts a violent eleventh century invasion by the South Indian Chola Empire as the primary cause of Anuradhapura's collapse, bringing to an end over a millennium of rule from Sri Lanka's first capital. Such is the dominance of this narrative that few alternative explanations for the abandonment of Anuradhapura have ever been posited, with just two alternative models ever described; epidemic malaria, and an imperial economic model.

The Congress of Carlowitz (1698/99) : Supra-cultural Diplomatic Norms and Practices of Peacemaking at the End of the Seventeenth Century /
:
This book delivers the first comprehensive analysis of the Peace Congress of Carlowitz (1698/99), challenging traditional Eurocentric views on early modern diplomacy. It demonstrates that peacemaking norms and practices were largely 'supra-cultural'-transcending cultural and religious divides across Europe and the Ottoman Empire. Carlowitz emerges as a significant multi-religious congress that introduced pioneering practices, particularly in ceremonial regulations. By confronting cultural essentialism, provincialising the Westphalian congress-model paradigm, and demythologising Carlowitz as a decisive political turning point-notably marking the adoption of a Western European-style diplomacy by cultural 'outliers' such as the Ottoman Empire and Muscovy-this study offers fresh insights into the complexity and polycentric nature of early modern multilateral diplomacy.

A History of Modern Jewish Religious Philosophy : Volume IV: The Crisis of Humanism (II). The End of the Jewish Center in Germany /
:
The last generation of German Jewish philosophers brought the long, tragic history of German-Jewish creative thought to a close in a blaze of glory, while transitioning to the new Jewish creative centers in Israel and America. The best known (Buber, Rosenzweig, Baeck, Strauss, Scholem) and the less known (Breuer, Birnbaum, Klatzkin, Aviad-Wolfsberg, Guttmann) are thoroughly explicated here, with generous primary text citations appearing in English for the first time, making this a rich sourcebook and reference for the thinkers presented.

Governing Muslims and Islam in contemporary Germany : race, time, and the German Islam Conference /
:
In 2006 against the background of the increasing problematization of Muslims and Islam in German public debate, the German government established the German Islam Conference. In a post 9/11 world, this was a time period shaped by the global war on terror, changes in the German naturalization law, the proliferation of racism targeting Muslims, and the expansion of security apparatuses. In Governing Muslims and Islam in Contemporary Germany Luis Manuel Hernández Aguilar critically analyzes the institutionalization of the Conference and the different projects this institution has set in motion to govern Islam and Muslims against the looming presence of racial representations of Muslims. The analysis begins with the foundation of the Conference until the end of its second phase in 2014.

Teacher Preparation Programs, Partnerships, and the New Landscape for the Profession : The Time for Change Is Now /
:
In this book, readers will have the opportunity to reflect on the multidisciplinary ideas and experiences presented by higher education and PreK-12 leaders seeking to establish effective partnerships in order to impact collaboration, opportunities for innovation, and growth. Authors explored how identifying, nurturing, and sustaining partnerships in systematic and structured ways is not a one size fits all experience. Partnership development requires flexibility and ongoing engagement with stakeholders. The impact of individualization, access to resources and support systems, and the value of multiple perspectives and experiences is also shared. Each chapter ends with reflective questions to support further reflection on experiences and ideas presented. Contributors are: Louis Bruschi, Eileen Corigliano, Jane DeFazio, Lorrie DeSena, Jose Luis Diaz Jr., David Gordon, Josephine Marcantonio, Dina Prisco, Vannessa Smith-Washington, Patricia Tooker and Joao Arnaldo Vembane.

Studying Russia and its Wars : Academic Stocktaking in Times of Insecurity /
:
Russia's invasion of Ukraine took by surprise not only politicians in many countries, but also experts who, for many years after the end of the Cold War, were confident of the growing mutual interdependence between Russian and European economies, and in the changing function of borders - from dividing to connecting. Most scholars have not only overlooked the aggressive potential inherent in the seemingly innocent calls for multipolarity carried out by the Russian leadership. This book discusses how the current war in Ukraine makes the scholarly community reconsider previous assumptions of Russia's domestic regime and security policies, and think of novel approaches to study the Russia-produced insecurities. This edited volume calls for a scholarly audit of the academic legacy that has prevented most researchers and public intellectuals from not only predicting, but also considering as a serious possibility the full-scale war that Russia unleashed against Ukraine. Contributors are: Françoise Daucé, Dinissa Duvanova, Vladimir Gelman, Ivan Gomza, Sanshiro Hosaka, Ailaksei Kazharski, Ivan U. Kłyszcz, Yulia Kurnyshova, Andrey Makarychev, Katalin Miklóssy, Anselm Schmidt, and Kirill Shamiev.

The other lands of Israel : imaginations of the land in 2 Baruch /
:
According to the current scholarly consensus, the apocalypse of 2 Baruch, written after the Fall of Jerusalem, either rejected the concept of the Land of Israel as a place of salvation or regarded it as of minor importance. Inspired by the perspective of Critical Spatial Theory, this book discusses the presuppositions behind this consensus with regard to the spatial epistemology it assumes, and explores the conception of the Land as a broad redemptive category. The result is a fresh portrait of the vitality of the Land-theme in the first centuries of the common era and a new perspective on the spatial imagination of 2 Baruch.

Al-Rabghuzi's the Stories of the prophets : Qiṣaṣ al-anbiyā' : an Eastern Turkish version /
:
A first edition of The Stories of the Prophets , written in Khwarezmian Turkish by the judge ( qāḍī ) Rabghūzī and completed in 1311, was published in 1995 by a group of authors. For the second edition H.E. Boeschoten and J. O'Kane have thoroughly revised both the text edition and the translation volume on the basis of additional manuscripts and reviews of the first edition. The Stories of the Prophets ( Qiṣaṣ al-Anbiyā' ) is a traditional genre in Islamic literature. Such a work contains the res gestae of the biblical prophets and stories about other personalities and peoples up to the birth of the Prophet Muḥammed. Exceptionally, Rabghūzī's Stories also contains a sizable account of the life of Muḥammed and his family. The work is a fundamental source both for Turkic linguistics and for Islamic Studies.

A legacy of learning : essays in honor of Jacob Neusner /
:
In a career spanning over fifty years, the questions Jacob Neusner has asked and the critical methodologies he has developed have shaped the way scholars have come to approach the rabbinic literature as well as the diverse manifestations of Judaism from rabbinic times until the present. The essays collected here honor that legacy, illustrating an influence that is so pervasive that scholars today who engage in the critical study of Judaism and the history of religions more generally work in a laboratory that Professor Neusner created. Addressing topics in ancient and Rabbinic Judaism, the Judaic context of early Christianity, American Judaism, World Religions, and the academic study of the humanities, these essays demarcate the current state of Judaic and religious studies in the academy today.
